Flerg. 1-0. (I'm not saying that's because he went 1-0 on 4 of the first 5 hitters, but it may not be unrelated.)

Zvon
May 17 2009 06:26 PM

What was that all about? It didn't look like he stumbled or anything.
He just held on to the ball.

Damn. 2 out rbi single by Molina.

That's a costly balk.

Zvon
May 17 2009 06:37 PM

Take the walk Santos.

Zvon

Woot.
Cain walks the bases loaded and there are no outs.
We gotta at least tie it here.

A) Beltran is an Omar signing.

B) Steve Phillips is an imbecile, who is pretty f-ing terrible at talent valuation.

ESPN couldn't get to this rubbish fast enough...Patrick Ewing guaranteed a Magic victory........finally a guarantee from Patrick that came true....never give up people....ESPN talking head said she never saw a team as loose as the Magic were at the morning shoot around...."how did you stay loose Dwight?"....I'm guessing that the Celtics were " tight" at there shoot around.....loose is like that edge stuff....you have it when you win....

I thought the Mets were " pressing " tonight...

90% of programming on ESPN is spent directing viewers to what else is, or is coming up, on ESPN.

Rockin' Doc
May 17 2009 10:00 PM

The only thing worse than watching Pelfrey twitch and fidget opposing baserunners into scoring position while his teammates stranded a busload of runners was listening to the ESPN announcers. Joe Morgan is annoying and repetitive, but Steve Phillips is insufferable. I don't know why I didn't just mute the television and spared myself the frustration of listening to their babbling.

Good start to the road trip. Now let's whip the Dodgers tomorrow.

Gwreck
May 17 2009 10:19 PM

I really wanted to duct tape the mouths of Miller, Morgan and Phillips by the time the game ended.

Other commitments have kept me from watching or attending many games for most of this month (I think I last caught one a week and a half ago) so based on tonight I'd think the Mets were totally stinking up the joint.

Balks aside, Pelfrey wasn't exactly bad tonight so I'm otherwise ok with occasionally getting oudueled by a better pitcher.

Want to see a big win tomorrow though.

Pagan has never hit lefthanded pitching particularly well, and righties don't really hit Affeldt any better than lefties do. There was no reason at all to make that switch.

PS Granted that Tatis would have wound up at short anyway, but given the team as it's currently structured, is there any reason to start somebody else at first base?

And can we please stop bunting guys from second to third with no outs?

At least in the first inning after a leadoff gift double. GAWD. Then to top it off, you've moved Cora to 3rd so he can score on an out and he doesn't even try when Beltran makes an out. Wonder if the thumb had something to do with that.

Frayed Knot
May 18 2009 07:08 AM

If nothing else, just have Castillo swing and maybe he'll accidently move him over with an out. It's not like he's a big strikeout risk - hell, low Ks is one of his few offensive assets.

Thought the Pagan PH move was brutal too.

metirish
May 18 2009 07:13 AM

Maybe I just haven't been listening but lately I here Manuel talking a lot about how this teams needs to be aggressive all the time , it's like his new mantra.

Frayed Knot
May 18 2009 07:29 AM

Kinda makes you wish M.I.'s posts came with sub-titles sometimes, huh?

Anyway, the answer is that bunting early is not only overly-conservative but it's questionable that it even accomplishes what it sets out to do. At best it's usually neutral in increasing the odds of a team getting one run, while the act of giving up an out for a base-advanced absolutely decreases the odds of having a big inning.
