Memorial Day IGT Nationals at Mets, 05/25/2009

Benjamin Grimm
May 25 2009 12:30 PM

From Yahoo.com's preview:

]The Mets’ offense may get a boost Monday. Manuel expects shortstop Jose Reyes, sidelined since Wednesday with tendinitis behind his right calf, to play. Carlos Beltran, who was New York’s designated hitter in Boston because of a bruised right knee, could play as well.

]The Nationals might be the perfect opponent to help Maine bounce back. He went 3-0 with a 1.53 ERA in three starts versus Washington last season despite walking nine in 17 2-3 innings.

John Lannan (2-3, 3.63) will get the ball for the Nationals, and he’s 2-0 with a 2.55 ERA over his last four outings. He gave up one run and seven hits over seven innings Wednesday in a 2-1 loss to Pittsburgh.

The left-hander, who was born on Long Island, is 1-2 with a 5.20 ERA in five career starts against the Mets.

Points to writer Brett Huston for saying on Long Island and not in Long Island.

I normally don't care about which uniform/hat/color scheme is going on, but..Red? I periodically was flipping on MLB Network and I thought even the Yankees looked silly in red caps. I'm sure the Mets will look even worse.

Booth discussing the plate discipline and OBP aspects of Moneyball, and when bringing up historical players who possessed that quality, Joe Morgan is emphatically the first name thrown out there. Which was always the ultimate irony of the Moneyball backlash. It's most vitriolic critic was perhaps the prototypical player for the philosophy.

Lineout to first on a hit-and-run erases Tatis, ends the fourth, and signals an Omir Santos bid for the Golden Whatever-Hat-Represents-a-Double-Play (his second DP on the night).

Agreed on the creepiness... but to me, that's part of the point-- goofy and creepy are the two sides of the mascot coin. How creepy, for example, is a dead-eyed, gargantuan-headed man with a rictus eternally frozen on his swollen face? But then, we're used to that-- and love it-- after 40 years...

Oh, and KABOOM.

Good on you, Pedro (who, it should be noted, Dunn has a 6-10 lifetime batting record against). Finish it, chin pubes.

Phew!

Now, the Teletubbies proved they were in a New York State of Mind by crossing through Times Square, an omen of good luck, like the youtube lof the guys marching around the bases.

Tinky Winky, of course, is a Piazza tribute.

On edit, sorry Doc -- I posted that before seeing your request...

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

BTW: After 101 PA, Sheff now batting .277, slugging .500, and getting on-base at a .410 clip. Also, he's been surprisingly spry on the bases-- 1 SB, 3 first-to-thirds on singles-- and the team's second-most sure-handed left fielder.

In retrospect, I'm okay with the signing. Anyone still object to this union?

The lighter bat certainly has to help. Heard he dropped from 35 oz to 32.

Smart move.

Rockin' Doc
May 25 2009 08:02 PM

I've come to the conclusion that Jerry Manuel apparently believes that 27 outs are just too many so he likes to give 2 or 3 away each game whenever the opportunity presents itself.

I was at the game and missed this excellent IGT, so a few comments if I may:

Sun baby = creepy. Very creepy.

Yay Sheff. Right or wrong he is a guy that plays very well when motivated and not so well when not so motivated. This situation seems to have him motivated quite a bit.

Apparently Parnell, having been crowned the new eighth inning guy by several media outlets, can't get motivated for the seventh any longer.

Beltran is a game-time decision with a bad leg, and yet Shines sends him home with the hottest guy in the hemisphere on deck. Bad call even if he makes it. And Wright should have gotten the bat.

A JJ Putz inning is maddening enough when watching on TV, but at least you can flip over to the Yankees or NHL playoffs or something eight or nine times during his inning. At the game you sort of lose track of where you were, like when you've been on the same highway for a long time. Suddenly you look up and there are two runners on base and you have no recollection of how they got there.

And that sun baby - extremely creepy.

Damn , wish I had known you were there, would have been fun to meet.

Anyway our first trip to Citi Field and we enjoyed it immensely. A few rookie mistakes by me , first we forgot the buggy for Lorcan....then parked in the Marina parking lot , had a split second to make that decision and obviously should have taken the other road and parked closer to CF.

Got there early to hang out , my sister and her husband met us there......really liked how much nice space is outsider and how friendly this staff are.....liked the Robinson Rotunda , big ass Mets store had everything except tee-shirts for toddlers....looked for them than asked and told nothing for that age...weird.....Lorcan picked up a Mets soccer ball so my sister bought him that.

The seats I got are from my brother-in-laws brother-in-law.....he has four seats in Promenade section 424 , right on the railing, two actual seats and room for two wheelchairs or you can grab two folding chairs....really great seats and if we hadn't forgotten the buggy there was plenty of room for that too.

Lorcan had fun but it's a bit much to expect an 18 month old to sit for innings at a time, we walked around and went down to the kids area where he threw a fir becasue he wanted to walk around the concourse and I wanted to carry him.....got to the hitting tee and he promptly walked in and took two whiffle balls while screaming at me for trying to pick him up....the line for Shake Shack was too long to wait in , next time for that.

Stayed through the 8th , had a fun time and like the stadium a lot...lots of space which is great.

Agree with Swanie about Beltran......had a great view of that and could see he was going to be out by a good bit......I have a picture of it even......jeez Razor....didn't think Sheffs was a home run from where we were...

Too many walks made this a long game and the delay for the review didn't help.
