David Wright

Keith and Gary made a great point. He hasn't gotten hot yet and is striking out like he's never done before and he's still hitting .326.

I'll add to that. His OBP is .409 and lots of morons on the radio hate him. Even some of the smart folk on this site are ripping him a new one.

The team's in first place. Can we leave him alone for a little while and show a little love? Maybe at least wait until his average dips below .310?

Edit:
As I say this he has reached base for the fourth time today and stolen his third base. He's working his ass off. Let's go Mets.

I'm fairly certain nobody on here-- occasional in-the-moment wordfart aside-- has "ripped him a new one."

Worried muttering? Yes, indeedy. I'm not so worried about him, long-term. It's just that, as other aspects of the team-- OF defense, starting pitching, bullpen, baserunning-- begin to show chinks via injury/fatigue/general badness, there's less leeway for the stalwarts to be human and still keep the team afloat, standings-wise.

As for the idiots at Citi booing when he presses, yeah, I can't truck with that longtime-listener-first-time-caller-brand BS.

Cool, but don't be too literal. I'm asking for a little shower of love for David that's all. Please don't get caught up in the words and miss the overall message. Though maybe you're right that no one here has ripped him a new one.

Edit: looks like you agree with me overall. I'm starting to get fuzzy and didn't quite understand your post the first time. Maybe my parents were right all along to make me skip the west coast games. I'll have to let them know.

The problems in the early going for Wright were:
- power was down
- strike-outs were up
- his hitting w/RiSP was bad

#1 is possibly due to the new stadium and/or small sample size

#2 was slightly disturbing if only because it was so out of whack to the consistency he had displayed in his career. His ~110 Ks/yr were suddenly on a pace for 200+

#3 is usually a self-correcting fluke that will trend towards normal with a larger sample size although it does tend to be the one that gets radio call-in types (on both sides of the phone line) apoplectic the quickest

#2 was my real worry, particularly his SOs looking over the outside half of the plate. At straight shit.

But what makes David Wright a great player, if nothing else does, is that he somehow gets his hits even when he's grinding.

my real worry was that the guy had a .400 OBP and was still getting criticized arod-style

He went though a very similar poor start in 2007, and it was every bit as frustrating to watch, but he came out of that OK and he looks like he's gonna come out of this one just fine.

If dips want to tell you that Wright isn't cutting it, sympathize sincerely with theiir pain and generously offer to take their tickets off their hands at half price.

I was hoping this wasn't Willie Kirkland* redux. I'm breathing a little easier now.

Later

*= Willie hit cleanup on the SF team with Mays and McCovey on it. Then, the pitchers found out the pitch he couldn't hit. He went 2-100 (That is NOT a misprint) and was soon out of baseball.

People booed Wright at the game on Wednesday.

I hate Mets fans.

Hey, I've got an idea. Boo the other team.

the fans do plenty of that.
I support booing boneheaded stupidity, like not running hard.

JCL and I were bitching about this on Monday-- the fans this year seem to need to be prompted-- continually-- to "LGM" or make positive noise at key moments; without prompting, it's polite silence punctuated by the occasional shout or one-off clapper. Booing strikeouts by guys trying hard? It seems to come all too naturally to a lot of these yokels.

(I'm hoping this isn't some kind of weird Shake-Shack-y byproduct. I do like those burgers.)

The problem is that if you start one of these cheers at a key time, you get cut off by the speaker system. Who are the fans going to follow, big brother over the loud speaker or the drunk crazy guy in the seat next to them?

The speakers at Citi Field are LOUD.

5/15 at the Giants.

A two out single in the top of the first to plate a run.
A no out double with the bases loaded down 3 to tie the game.
A ninth inning single with no outs and one on.

That kid is clutch.

Edit: Wright 27 for his last 65. Coincidentally, the Mets are 12-5 over that span.
Edit: Keith has his back. Noticed it in the postgame today and the GF reported it happened during one game when I was at work. God bless her for keeping me informed, I should get her something nice this week.

An image search for 'John Stearns' returns rather slim pickins. I was looking for a shot that showed Dave Parker's jaw in the act of breakage, but no such luck.

Now hitting .363, .375 with runners in scoring position.

Wright is hotter than Scarlett Johansson shaving her legs in the kitchen sink.

(Go ahead, search for it.)

OK, maybe not. But he's pretty hot right now.

I'm proud of you. Between this and your open-ness about your movie selection of last night and it seems you're really starting to accept yourself. And that's fine. We're Mets fans. We're all a little gay.

Now Wright shaving his legs in the kitchen sink...I'm not sure we, as a group, could handle that.
