Here's the thing

If you're looking for a shortstop to pull up from the farm, the Mets are basically scrod. Jose Coronado had been the Buffalo shorstop most of the way so far, but he's been hitting something awful. Like lower OPS than Nick Evans awful. Now the Buffalo infield is Michel Abreu and a bunch of secondbasemen. Andy Green --- Eight games, all at second, and on the DL since. Hasn't played more than 10 games at short since 2003. Mike Lamb --- playing third and also not hitting a lick. A veteran of 936 big-league games, he's played everywhere on the field except pitcher. And shortstop. He hasn't played there as a big leaguer either. Jonathan Malo --- a 25-y.o. going-nowhere prospect, at least he's hovering around the interstate, which is better than most of the other options. But he also has but 13 games of shortstopping experience. Argenis Reyes --- Battled through a 121 plate appearances last season with the Mets, but was ultimately proven to be over-exposed. Ramon Martinez --- you remember him as a desperation stopgap secondbaseman during the Collapse of 2008. He's hitting OK --- a punchless .290 --- and has 260 games of big-league shorstopping experience. He's old, but he's looking like the only option. At Bingo, 20-year-old Ruben Tejada is fighting for his starting job to the demoted Jose Coronado, so don't look there for help. Still out there: Jose Valentin and Damion Easley. Both are presumably working on their barbecue skills and not in shape to play.

What did I miss? Why are we talking about replacement shortstops? Jose's injury more serious than first thought? I haven't read or seen that anywhere. Cora's finger broke or something? Edgy just worrying too much?

Edgy worrying after running out of shorstops due to injury early in yesterday's game. For all I know, Reyes and Cora will be 100% by the time they make LA, but running out of shortstops makes a man wonder who's next, and Martinez seems the lone opton. In fact, I'd be surprised if they didn't at least sign a minor-league option.

Andy Green didn't look great in Spring (although he signed my ball) if I ever see Argenis again, I might stop watching. Ramon Martinez might be an okay guy. Ruben Tejada impressed me, but I don't think he's ready to play at the major league level yet. (In fact, he didn't have a name on the back of his jersey, and wore either 86 or 87 depending on if it was available in the home/away color scheme) He always hasn't quite gotten comfortable turning a double play. I think Reyes and Cora will probably be fine. I didn't listen to postgame stuff, but it seemed like they took Cora out just precautionarily. You'd think Reyes would be back, but I don't know what's going on there..

Hopefully nobody will be needed, but there's no disputing that the organization is thin at the position. Signing Valentin or Easley to a minor league deal doesn't sound like such a bad precautionary measure.

Anybody seen Chris Woodward lately? Jorge Velandia? Luis Rivera? Rey Ordonez, even with birth certificate adjusted, is under 40. And he couldn't have possibly lost anything off his offensive game. Can't lose what ya don't got.

Besides, if you asked Keith, i'm sure he'd tell you that a "Right-handed first baseman is not an idea whose time has come." ;-) Actually, is that why Murphy and Reed are the two guys Manuel decided to mention about playing 1B? And..I've always wondered this, but why does Delgado play 1B righty? or why does he bad Lefty? which is it?! I think he'd be a good for this particular team. Not at all likely to happen, of course, but if I were in charge, I'd consider reaching out to him. Still young, played as much short as second in the minors, and is getting big league money to play down there now. Shot in the dark.
