="G-Fafif":2gs9t9jb]Jerry handled that interview like the weekly conference call I used to be obligated to participate in: when it came time to speak, it was obvious he had total contempt for everybody else on the line.
And hail.[/quote:2gs9t9jb]
Heh. I definitely got that feeling.
He kept asking,
"Do you understand what I'm saying?"
and Francessa's like "yeah, I understand."
It was like listening to to a high schooler get scolded by the principal for running the hallway. "Mike! Do you get it? This is how it is! Do you understand what I'm saying?"

On Murphy's reaction to playing first base
]
"His reaction, it surprised me," Manuel said. "He just lit up, had a big smile. I spoke with (outfield coach) Razor (Shines) about it and he said, 'Oh yeah, he's like a kid with a new toy.' Whereas I'm like, 'I'm scared to death. If he can't catch it out there, how's he going to catch it in here?'"

Spoken like a career .150 hitting infielder.
Maybe because he's been playing the infield his whole career, Jerry. It's not a toy, Jerry. It's a job he feels confident he can do. That should please you.
By the way, I went to check Jerry's BB-r.com page to get get that stat, and his sposor is the same guy who sponsored J.J. Putz's page with "Welcome to New York, J.J.!"
For Jerry, we get:
<table bgcolor="FFFCC" border="1" bordercolor="black" cellpadding="15" cellspacing="0"><tr><td>Howard Megdal sponsor(s) this page.
<blockquote>Mark my words: when his tenure ends, Jerry Manuel will be talked about with Gil Hodges and Davey Johnson.</blockquote></td></tr></table> So, I'm marking his words.

I'm getting to the point in hearing him where everything out of the guy's mouth sounds passive-aggressive. (Or perhaps everything is passive-aggressive.)

I should have noted and I'm not even sure why I posted that here but it came from Rubin today and not from the radio. But I agree with you LWFS, it's as if Jerry is covered if Murphy fails at first , I should post the article
]
LOS ANGELES - The Daniel Murphy experiment in left field is over.
Now, Murphy is the Mets' first baseman of the future. Or until Carlos Delgado returns in 10 weeks. Well, at least through the weekend, when Jerry Manuel will have had a few games to evaluate Murphy.
A day after Murphy committed his third error in left field by dropping a sinking liner from the Dodgers' Juan Pierre, Manuel told Murphy he would now get a chance for a few games at first base. Murphy started there last night in the series finale against the Dodgers.
The manager described Murphy, 24, as elated to be relieved of outfield duty. Murphy has only played 13 games at first since joining the Mets organization, all last season at Double-A Binghamton. He's been a third baseman for most of his pro career.
Murphy agreed infield should be easier for him, but noted that he will need to hone his footwork. Murphy didn't want to suggest a burden had been lifted. "When we win a pennant a burden will be lifted," he said.
Murphy is a hard worker, so say this much for him: He'll get his uniform dirty, something Willie Randolph and others have knocked Delgado for not doing.
"As an infielder, he should be better at first base probably because his problem before used to be throwing," infield coach Sandy Alomar Sr. said, referring to the bulk of Murphy's miscues in the minors at third base. "Playing first base, well, he doesn't have to make that many throws."
Murphy is using Delgado's glove, which was passed to him through Alex Cora, who is on the DL with a torn thumb ligament. Murphy should receive his own glove soon.
"I've got to put in an order," he said.
Aside from inexperience at first base, Manuel hopes to put a better defensive lineup on the field each night, obviously needed after Monday's five-error game. He plans to institute regular early infield practice on road trips as well as on the first day of home series. Murphy moving to the infield also means more action for Ryan Church in right field. Gary Sheffield should play two of three games in the outfield at Fenway Park during the weekend.
As for Murphy, Manuel acknowledged it may have been a mistake playing him in the outfield this season, although he noted that Murphy did show promise there late last season.
The manager diplomatically agreed that it "would be nice" if the Mets had the prospects to promote from the minors to fill the exact voids needed, such as a shortstop when Jose Reyes missed five starts or now a first baseman. But that hasn't happened, with outfielder Angel Pagan and journeyman Ramon Martinez recently summoned instead.
Meanwhile, what happens if Murphy doesn't show aptitude at first base?
"I don't know where else you want me to go with him," Manuel deadpanned. "Third base?"

Jerry's really coming across this season as a guy who's not too thrilled with the team that he has.
I didn't get that feeling last year. Maybe because he was in audition mode then?

Newsday's Dave Lennon dives into the thought process of Jerry Manual focussing on his attempt to get a read on his players.
Last Sunday in San Francisco, Manuel sent up Angel Pagan to pinch hit for Murphy against Giants lefthander Jeremy Affeldt with the bases loaded and one out in the eighth inning. Pagan, recalled from Triple-A Buffalo last Friday, grounded into a double play that killed the Mets' final rally in a 2-0 loss.
"Earlier in the year, when he's swinging well, Murphy hits in that situation, no doubt," Manuel said. "But because I'm with him now, and I can see when he is not himself, it's different. He might even have good numbers against that guy. But at that time, I know that number is going to be at the short end rather than what's normally going to happen because of the fact that he's not right."

I thought that about Willie on 9/1/07 It came so close..
I hope that's the case, but I have a feeling we'll be saying things "If we had signed Manuel to play first base, he'd have done a better job."

"Also, I'm a do-it-yourselfer. Sometimes-- and any experienced DIYer knows this, when you do home repairs, and you're figuring out the amount of boarding you'll need to cover a floor, you may measure all day long, and that tape measure's not going to tell you anything. Sometimes, you've just got to go with your gut, because that 10' x 12' of oak just isn't going to give you 10' x 12' of coverage-- you can just tell from the way it's leaning there that it's not right."
[Either he needs to stop talking, or I need to stop listening. Because if not, my head's asploding by July.]
