Next generation of Mets fans

Fboy, now age 4, is able to read the stats line from the top of the SNY broadcast and tell me the score, outs, count, inning, and baserunners. He also knows the more "marquee" names in the Mets lineup by sight and uniform number -- Delgado, Beltran, Wright, Reyes and Santana anyway. And he always knows to "boo the Yankees" and "boo the Phillies" when asked about those teams by strangers. Fgirl, age 22 months, knows when a game is on and will repeatedly request "baseball" to be put on if you're cruising the dial. She also can say "Go Mets!" and will answer with a resounding "Me too!" when asked who in the house likes baseball. What a great thing, to see them turn into little versions of my own self. Sans the drinking and profanity. There'll be time for that in middle school.

My wife is a Yankee fan. We don't have a child yet, but we plan to eventually. She's also Catholic, and I'm Jewish. I've told her that whatever religion we choose is fine with me, as long as we can raise our kid with the Mets. Priorities.

Not fervent enough to actually sit and watch on television, or even to follow on a day-to-day basis, but they proudly wear their Mets gear and get excited about attending the games. My daughter, about to turn 8, seems to have more fan potential than my 12-year-old son. I'm just glad they're not Phillies fans, which could very well have been the case, since we're in the heart of enemy territory. My 10-year old son couldn't give a rats ass about them. But I'm...not... sad, 'cause 2 outta 3 ain't bad. Fboy, watching on his little couch on the floor, says without a beat, "the Dodgers have a rally going here, Dad." It's fun to watch them pick up the jargon. Centerfield Jul 08 2009 02:07 PM My three-year old (four at the end of August) son has t-shirts for Santana and Wright. He has a Johan bobble-head. He had a Pedro jersey and 2 Beltran jerseys. But this year, he randomly picked Gary Sheffield as his favorite player. He still doesn't pay much attention to the games when they're on TV, but every once in a while, he'll look at the TV, see Sheffield batting and chant "Let's go Sheffield!" And Gary gets a hit (if not a HR) each time. And although he loves going to CitiField, you wouldn't know it by watching him play. When he's pretending to be a construction worker while playing outside, he always says he's doing the same thing. Tearing down Citifield and building a new Shea Stadium. sharpie Jul 08 2009 02:40 PM Lenny used to watch the games, wear the gear etc but no longer does (except the 1986 We're No 1 shirt he wore to the last CPF game, he wears that a lot). Friends, girls, rock 'n' roll won out. Happened to me for a while as well so I have hope. He still roots for them and enjoys going to games and if I'm watching he'll sometimes join me for a while, especially if he comes in near the end. My daughter has never cared. He makes me get my glove, then sets up the tee in the driveway and whacks the ball into the street, saying "I'm David Wright! I'm Number Five!" He can also sing (badly) the Jose Jose Jose song.
