Seawolf's on Jeopardy... baby...

Well, not yet. But for the second time, I've been invited to the next step -- the contestant auditions in NYC.

June 24 -- I'll be there.

Now, I just have to learn... um... everything, I guess.

I'm rooting for you pal.

I auditioned in NYC for Jeopardy back in 2006, didn't get the call. Took the online test again last year but was off my game that day and I'm not surprised to not get another live audition this time around. Will try again next year.

Repeat after me - pose each response as a question.

And "What the fuck does that mean?" is NOT a proper response.

Y'know what you can do to really screw with their minds at the audition, answer each in the form of a question but do so with incorrect terms.

Like:
- He pitched the World Series winner for the 1960 Mets
Where is Jerry Koosman?

or
- It's the national color of the Netherlands
How is Orange?

All they require is that it be in the form of a question so they still have to give it to you.
I'd do it and then sue them for fraud if they don't let you in.

seawolf17
May 23 2009 02:53 AM

I actually tried that last time a bit. (It apparently didn't help.) I buzzed in with the sorta-correct response "What 'choo talkin' about, Willis?" in the category Sitcoms.

I'm going to be less flippant this time.

Help Wolfie brush up his Shakespeare.

1) 38 plays, 154 sonnets.

2) The first folio came out in 1623, published by his former colleagues, and had 36 plays.

3) Wifey's name: Anne Hathaway. Seriously.

4) His company for most of his career was called "Lord Chambelain's Men," named for their patron. When King James ascended the throne, they became "The King's Men" under his patronage.

5) Most lines by a Shakespearean woman: Portia (Merchant of Venice). I think she's also the only female character who leads her play in lines. Her most quoted lines are

The quality of mercy is not strain'd.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
It reads like something from St. Paul, which gives rise to the supspicion that Shakespeare might have been among the compilers of the King James Bible.

6) There's only two sonnets they'd ask you about, and, of those two, you only need to konw the first few lines.

Sonnet 18:
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate

Sonnet 130
My mistress' eyes are nothing like the sun;
Coral is far more red than her lips' red;
If snow be white, why then her breasts are dun;
If hairs be wires, black wires grow on her head.
7) To thine own self be true is spoken by Polonius in Hamlet.

8) "The first thing we do, let's kill all the lawyers" is spoken by Dick in Henry VI Part II

9) Richard II opens his own play with "Now is the Winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this son of York." He's mocking the guy who got the throne instead of him and can be used to mock politicians who people glow over during the honeymoon period like President Obama.

10) Review Hamlet's soliliquy, Henry V's St. Crispin's Day Speech, and the Witches' incantation from MacBeth, and you're golden.

Here's hoping that Seawolf isn't as dumb as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.

On Celebrity Jeopardy last night, the catagory was 'I Went To UCLA'. The question was along the lines 'former UCLA center who played for the Trailblazers' Kareem buzzed in with 'Who was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar!'. Uh, no Kareem, we were looking for Bill Walton.

The he lost $8,000.00 (and in effect the game) on a Daily Double by not realizing that Sandra Day O'Connor was a Supreme Court Justice and not a United States Senator.

Didn't Bob Woodward get a question wrong on Jeopardy about the authors of All The President's Men? I seem to think that that happened, but I'm not sure.

Whether or not that happened, I don't think it means that Jabbar is stupid, but that there's a difficult balance between the desire to answer a question correctly and the desire to answer it quickly.

The only thing I remember about the few 'Celebrity Jeopardy' episodes I saw was that the questions are markedly easier than those in the regular shows.
Even the shows that pitted writers, newspeople etc. against each other were dumbed down, not just the actor/singer ones.

I can't even imagine how hard it must be to 1) answer those questions 2) do it quickly 3) not think about how your friends and family will taunt you about stupid answers for the rest of your life.

Between those three, I'd probably get my favorite color wrong like that knight in Holy Grail.

Now, if I'm a betting man, I'd say the smartest looking person here who is not named Seawolf17 is definitely Ms. Silverstein, and I hope you didn't match up agaisnt her initially. Jody Allen is right out as far as he clearly lacks the sort of Jeopardy! intellect to get you through the day and light up the cocktail party circuit at night, but I suspect he's taking some sort of PEDs to make him faster on the plunger than anybody else.

Ryan Swaim, I asssume, disappeared from the set after getting punched in the face in the green room. Everybody knew Todd Ryan did it, but nobody ratted him out because you all secretly admired Todd and wished it was you doing the punching.

I'm also guessing that there was also a little green room gossip going around about Todd and Shawna Brandle.

I think the kid got hosed -- I remember them saying that as long as it didn't obviously, completely change the pronunciation, then they'd accept it. I don't think the "t" there does enough to change it, but whatever. Wouldn't have mattered in the end because of Little Civil War Buff on the left.

Poor ruling by the judges regarding the kid's misspelling of the correct answer. In the end, it wouldn't have mattered since the winner set a one day record for Jeopardy Kids. Still, the judges were pretty harsh on young Thomas.

He had a great interview with the AV Club (http://www.avclub.com/article/controver ... is--201355) that echoes a lot of the same things I posted, except he won a lot of money and I didn't.

since this is the only Jeopardy thread that doesn't get archived.

Jeopardy online test is open again. Closest to NYC is Boston for the secondary testing location though.
