What Would YOU Do?

It has just been announced that a famous person will be joining the Board of Directors of the Company for which you work. This person's politics are abhorrent to you - you are 180 degrees out of phase on every issue. It is almost to the point thatyou dislike this person on a personal level.

What would you do?

Nobody is 180 degrees out of phase on every issue.

I'd accept the fact that they have as much right to an opinion as I do, and hold off my confrontation until the board adopts a positon that offends me.

How closely do you deal with the Board of Directors?

I'm sure I've worked under many an abhorrent big shot, but it doesn't tend to affect my day-to-day.

Its a small company - fewer than 50 people.
The Board members show up every once in a while and walk around and are introduced to the staff. No real interaction other than that, and it is not the kind of company that gets involved in political things. So, Edgy, there is little likelihood that they will make a corporate decision than offends me.
We have another person on our board who holds some of the same views as this new person. And letters go out to VIP customers under that person's signature. At one time, this new person held a position that would add credibility to our Company's offerings.
But, at times, some of the customers want to talk politics. I'll have to not get drawn into those if letters start going out under this new person's name.

I thought you sold shiny investment grade coins now instead of working
for the man. Ya gotta tell us who this new board member is. Ya gotta.

I would stay, and try and separate someone's job from their personal politics. I'm sure some of my coworkers believe some hare-brained shit too but it doesn't affect me or my life in any real way.

It wouldn't bother me, and I'm pretty political.

You work for a Yankee fan?

I appreciate being political, but showing intolerance for somebody --- to the point of refusing to share the same employer --- based on differeing perspectives doesn't advance anybody's agenda. Not in any productive or healthy way.

I'm certain any of us, in an office of 50, have ideological opponents. If you're a civil person and they're civil people, that's where dialogue starts and we can truly progress. Alienating people won't do it. We just grow more entrenched.

While you're up there on that soap box, tell him to tell us who the famous
person is that has his shorts in a knot.

1)Yes I do. Our present spokesperson is Barry Goldwater Jr. I don't have a problem with him. I even voted for his dad back in the day. But he may soon not be with us any more, due to personal illness (I'm guessing from looking at him his last few visits to our office).
2) I'd still prefer not to on this forum.

If I'm connecting the dots (which is Woodward and Bernstein talk for a little unfancy Googling) I can see that just about anybody your company might consider for its board, based on various grip and grin photos and between-the-lines reading, would be kind of a downer...if you're so inclined to see those kinds of public figures as a downer.

I can also see this company might want to check on the spellings of famous people's names before featuring them on its site.

I'm not googling to figure out who we're talking about, i'll just add that i wouldn't care what my employer's (or co-worker's) political views were in most circumstances. the only times i could see it mattering were if you worked for a law firm or newspaper or something like that where your work-product under the new boss is going to be expected to be in line with their political views. (for example a conservative takes over your firm and decides you now specialize in defending the NRA)
