You know - if that McCutcheon guy turns out to be any good, that's not a horrible lineup at all.

The pitching's not bad, either. Assuming no rookie yips, the kid should improve their OF defense (a clicking Morgan-McCutchen-Moss has nationwide coverage). If McCutchen hits the ground doing more than just running (he's got Reyesian speed, by all reports), LaRoche the younger (post-hype sleeper!) keeps developing, and Doumit comes back as some semblance of his regular self, this team will be an absolute pain in the rear to play down the stretch.
|
Edgy DC Jun 04 2009 08:56 AM |
They aren't so easy on the ass right now.
|
Fman99 Jun 04 2009 09:44 AM |
Man, let's fire this game up. I need a proper cleansing of the palate after Monday and Tuesday's suckitude.

Seriously. I tried explaining this at home... you stick that thing up in the air enough times, I'm gonna take a poke at it. Same exact thing.

I get into trouble for that kinda stuff .

I get in trouble for it sometimes too. Other times, not so much. It's a crapshoot ;)

Beltran just misses a dinger there according to Howie. Wayne stupidly adds that if Beltran hadn't lost weight due to sickness then it would've been a home run. Like he knows.
|
Benjamin Grimm Jun 04 2009 10:41 AM |
Bad call by the first base ump results in Castillo being called out at first. Beltran follows with a double off the top of the wall, so the ump has cost the Mets a first-inning run.
|
Fman99 Jun 04 2009 10:42 AM |
Beh. Sheff down looking.
|
Fman99 Jun 04 2009 10:47 AM |
Shaky start for Pelf. First and third, no outs.

Well this sucks. Again.

An intentional BB in the first inning to a guy hitting .243? Am I reading that right?
|
metirish Jun 04 2009 10:59 AM |
4 - 0 already.......everyone is hitting of Pelfrey....
|
TransMonk Jun 04 2009 10:59 AM |

first 8 batters for Pitt: 6 singles and an intentional BB. 4-0 with the pitcher coming up.

I just turned off the television.

Nymr83 Jun 04 2009 11:00 AM |
if you'd shown me this Mets lineup on April first I'd have been crying about it, but given whatsbeen thrown out there lately it looks great today.

It was a 3-0 count may as well just walk him intentionally type of intentional walk, if that makes any difference.

Murph's nine lives are up.

Turned the TV on again (sooner than I had planned) and Alex Cora (who doesn't suck) drives in the second Mets run.
|
Benjamin Grimm Jun 04 2009 11:17 AM |
And Castillo, who also doesn't suck, hustles out an infield hit to bring home the third run.
|
Edgy DC Jun 04 2009 11:17 AM |
Hee-yeah. Infield hit for Castillo.
|
Benjamin Grimm Jun 04 2009 11:18 AM |

Mets are looking for a bat but a legitimate number 2 starter behind Johan would fit the bill nicely. Ex....Johan,Oswalt, Pelfrey, Maine, Perez when he comes back but Livan until then. I also think Murphy isnt woth the 250 average right now when he cant catch a cold. If he was hitting .340 I would say different. Derosa would fit in nicely and be useful when Delgado comes back.

I remember listening to Howard Cosell giving the out of town scoreboard. Whe he got to the Braves' game he said (a close paraphrase), "The Braves must have given up on winning this one. Ron Piche is in the game." I get that same feeling when I see Sean Green coming in out of the bullpen. Later

Don't look now, but Green has given up 1 run over his last 8 outings (6.1 IP) on 5 hits, 2 BBs & 7 Ks. Or you can continue to label guys as lifelong failures based on 5 weeks or so of pitching. Your call.

Anything barbs I toss in Green's direction are at least 50 percent attempted-reverse-jinx... if we're doing anything this year, we'll need some productive innings from the firm of Takahashi,Green and Stokes. I've seen some of his previous work (thanks to a friend's Extra Innings package the last few years) and think he can still be plenty useful and good-graces-worthy. JJ ChinPubes, on the other hand, kinda lost me with the "no adrenaline" BS.

I have noticed a quiet turn of fortunes by Green and do take heart in the rumor that baseball players who get worse occasionally get better. But I'm with LWFS on being dismayed by the adrenaline quote, especially since a) eighth innings count like ninth innings, basically; and b) the Mets have gone along with that ludicrous "Thunderstruck" stuff when Putz enters a game. Not so much the song but the light and sound effects. Mrs. Fafif witnessed it firsthand and marveled that "it's the pitcher who changes the weather." Yes. J.J. Putz appears and it rains base hits everywhere.
|
metirish Jun 04 2009 01:20 PM |
Howie just said something that struck me. "The Mets have been humbled this week in Pittsburgh , even with a depleted lineup that shouldn't happen".
|
metsguyinmichigan Jun 04 2009 01:21 PM |

But it's a perfect metaphor for the MYFs -- a juiced up car whose design heyday was long ago. Sadly, the Mets right now are more like the 1985 Dodge Omni I had in college. Ran real well when all of its parts were functioning. Sadly, it spent a lot of time in the shop getting fixed.

Why is Wright sliding head first into second base with two outs in a game where they're 5 runs down?
|
G-Fafif Jun 04 2009 01:27 PM |
Lost in the non-excitement, besides David getting on base a lot, is the play he made to save Putz embarrassment on the grounder J.J. mishandled. Great instincts, great follow-through in a horrid game.
