So - if I'm not mistaken - we had no replays since the rule was put in last August ... until this week when we've had four

They really should have a fifth umpire acting as a scorekeeper/replay guy.

It's such an easy time saver for all sports isn't it? Have a seperate guy do the replays. It's 2009, fer cryin out loud, have one dude at the league office with 100 TVs do all the games at once.

I'm beginning to think that it's not really a home run until the umpire emerges from the tunnel twirling his finger above his head. It's amazing that that's become such a familiar sight so quickly.

The NHL has the review centre in Toronto, and the referee and off-ice guys get the replay decisions from them. No reason that wouldn't work here.

That's the sport with ice and sticks right? What do they review in that? If the puck-thingie crosses the goal line?

They count missing teeth after fights, that kind of thing. It's used strictly for goals, but several factors in addition to in or out - touched by a high stick, kicked in, net off the stanchions, and whether a goal beat the clock, among others.

That's cool. I actually am getting into some of these overtime playoff games, including tonights. You lost me on this one: "net off the stanchions".

When the net gets dislodged it can affect whether a goal counts, depending on who knocked it off, if it interfered with the goalie, stuff like that.

No, no, no. What you need is for these guys to come out, each showing a different replay on their belly for the umpires to see. Then, if it's a home run, the smiling baby sun appears on the scoreboard.

I think we have to acknowledge that this is more than a coincidence, but also a product of the Mets building an outfield wall jagged with "quirky" battlements, with stands right up against the rim so peeps' greedy little hands can reach over.

The Mets could help themselves in this regard by having Subway put up a sign that isn't yellow and white. metsmarathon May 28 2009 08:52 AM is the sign metal? i would think hte clanking sound of a ball hitting off it would be helpful, tho maybe not in a loud stadium... really, they need more cameras, perhaps stationary cameras dedicated to the task? or they could get really fancy cameras that automatically track the ball, following its trajectory and maintaining focus on the ball i he center of the field of view. that would be cool...
