RJ was to have (is?) playing for the Edenton Steamers, on the Coastal Plain Collegiate league in North Carolina, where former Met Joe Smith omce played.

Here's the Steamers' scoting report on RJ

Has blazing speed and noteworthy raw power . . . Projects as a complete player because his range and arm can impact the game from the outfield while his speed and power can be offensive assets. Willing to draw walks to get on base to set the table for team’s offense.

How'd I know this was happening, JCL?

RJ has signed a contract with the Mets. No high-falutin' posturing for him.

RJ turned 22 in February. He was a college senior (edit -- actually he's a junior... hmm) . Anyway...

Anyway, he is to report to the Kingsport Mets and their new manager, Mike DiFelice.

BTW, here is the release from yesterday detailing the early signees. See if you can find your new prospect here!

The New York Mets today announced that they have signed 22 of their 50 draft picks from the 2009 First Year Player Draft, including seventh-round selection Darin Gorski, the team's highest pick to agree to terms so far. The lefthanded pitcher from Kutztown University will report to Kingsport (A) of the Appalachian League.

The Mets have come to terms with 11 of their first 25 selections including catcher John Freeman (8th round, 254 overall), first baseman Samuel Honeck (11th round, 344 overall) and outfielder Ronald Harris (14th round, 434 overall). Freeman and Harris will join Gorski in Kingsport, while Honeck will begin the season at Brooklyn (A) of the New York Penn League.

The team's signings are as follows:

Darin Gorski (LHP, 7th round, 224 overall, Kingsport)
John Freeman (C, 8th, 254 overall, Kingsport)
Samuel Honeck (1B, 11th, 334, Brooklyn)
Ronald Harris (OF, 14th, 434, Kingsport)
Alexander Gregory (OF, 17th, 524, Brooklyn)

Joseph August (OF, 20th, 614, Brooklyn)
Joseph Bonfe (3B, 21st, 644, Kingsport)
Zachary Von Tersch (RHP, 22nd, 674, Kingsport)
John Church (RHP, 23rd, 704, Brooklyn)
Michael Johnson (RHP, 24th, 734, Brooklyn)
Kurt Steinhauer (OF, 27th, 824, Kingsport)
Brian Needham (RHP, 28th, 854, Kingsport)
ZeErika Hall (OF, 29th, 884, Gulf Coast)
Thomas Chism (LHP, 32nd, 974, Kingsport)
James Schroeder (3B, 33rd, 1,004, Brooklyn)

Travis Ozga (1B, 41st, 1,244, Kingsport)

RJ clubbed his first professional HR last week and although he's whiffing a little too much, is walking too: His OBP is .398.

If he can reduce the whiffs vs. the lefties and continue to work righties for the free passes, sky's the limit for this kid, according to me.

Here's a photo of RJ (21) receiving congrats for his fourth home run of the season, last night.

RJ is hitting 287/409/426 // 835 with a team-best 19 walks. If he can cut the whiffs slightly and stay in center field, he could be a contendah.

All of Kingsport is hitting.

JCL - Mets Inside Pitch online has an article about your boy today. Unfortunately, I don't have a subscription. If you do, this is a heads-up.
If not, maybe someone else here does.
Anyone?

Promoted to Brooklyn!

1-for-3 in his debut last nite. May have to step aside for Beltran's debut there tomorrow, however.

Re: Adopted: Ronald "R.J." Harris

RJ got his 2010 season started this weekend with the Cyclones, but it looks like he may have to sing for his supper as part of a DH/LF/RF pool with Cody Holliday, Will Cherry, Kurt Steinhauer and Cory Vaughn.

Anyway, RJ was 1-3 with a double. The Clones took 2 of 3 with the MFYs.

Re: Adopted: Ronald "R.J." Harris

They solved that logjam in the Brooklyn outfield by promoting RJ to Savannah. He's batting .333 there after two games.

Re: Adopted: Ronald "R.J." Harris

Poor RJ. 1 for his last 29 and 176/255/259 for the season at Savannah.

That's how to get released.

And released he is (as of March 24, evidently).

Sorry, R.J. Best of luck in your future endeavors!
