So the much-discussed start for Murphy is a no-go.

Hawkeye57
Jun 11 2009 01:43 PM

Surprised Church is not playing. Maybe they play Gary because he get's to DH the next three games.

Edgy DC
Jun 11 2009 01:46 PM

They play Gary because he's going to get about 14 total bases tonight.

bmfc1
Jun 11 2009 01:48 PM

I agree w/you Hawkeye. As annoyed as I was with Church's AB in the 10th--one out, takes on 3 and 0 when he can win it with a homer, then K's on ball 4--I'd rather have him in the lineup than a rookie (especially when both are lefties).

And in a pivotal rubber game to boot. I would think they give the vet Church the nod here because of the experience. Expect Martinez to get some jitters, this being a very important divisional game.

I also thought it was Wright 3rd, Beltran 4th and Sheffield 5th, unless they changed their mind that quickly. Hope Jerry knows what he's doing.

Would also have used Murphy over Tatis here. Unless they play Murphy for all three against the MFY's.

Jun 11 2009 02:46 PM

Only one LHP (Pettitte) during the MFY series as CC goes tonight, so between that and the DH, there'll lots o' ABs for everyone.

I think the question for tomorrow is whether or not Maine will be good to go with his whole dead arm problem. Wonder if they call up Niese, Figgy or someone to replace him.

Nice first for Redding.
He made a real nice play on the Rollins bunt to lead off the game.
He don't snag that and throw him out it's a lead off single.

We are on the board.

Castillo's lead off double does not go to waste.

Zvon
Jun 11 2009 05:26 PM

Phils yakkers are surprised the Mets are playing for one run in the first vs. Moyer
(bunting Castillo over to third), but I feel you have to make sure that lead
off double is not left stranded.

If we didn't score there I'd have felt deflated already.

OK fellow Mets fans, learn me something here.

Keith referred to the bunt Cora just executed as a 'drag bunt.' I was always under the impression that a drag bunt was to the pull field, and a push bunt to the opposite field. I would refer to Cora's bunts during both of his ABs tonight as push bunts.

Am I wrong, or is the hair dye seeping into Keith's cerebellum?

I agree w/you (on the original definition thing) but Keith's not the only one who seems to use 'drag' as some kind of all-purpose bunt adjective.
Drag bunts, in my mind, strictly referred to a LH batter "dragging" it along with him as he started towards 1st

Kind of reminds me of when ESPN dorks use "One-Timer" to describe just about every shot during hockey highlights ... but at least then I just write it off to them being too stupid to know the difference.

I believe "drag bunt" refers to any bunt aimed at getting the batter on base performed while the batter is starting to run.

My thinking is that drag bunts are down the line --- either line --- as opposed to push bunts, which you thy to get past the pitcher, usually toward the secondbaseman.

Balls don't springboard off the Monster like that.

Swan Swan H
Jun 11 2009 06:23 PM

I always thought the motion of the bat informed the nickname - when you push the bat forward, the bunt would go to the opposite field, but when you pull, or drag the bat inward the ball goes to the pull field.

Endy's game winner is the best example of the drag I can think of - he dragged it with him down the line.

I appreciate everyone's thoughts - obviously there is no clear-cut definition, and we've all heard different references over the years.

Now, if I could only get people to stop referring to 'Eastern Standard Time' during Daylight Savings Time...

Y'know, it's easy to say that the sac bunts "worked" in the early innings as they led directly to runs.
But that's at least partially a false argument. Those runs either would have, or at least could have scored anyway, and what the sac bunts do in the long run is to make it more likely that those innings - some of which were started with leadoff doubles fer crissakes - would top out as single-run innings. Once you give up the out to move the runner over and another to get the run in it's 2-out w/none-on and very little chance of a crooked number going up on the board.

I'm really getting sick of this fascination with the sac bunt and those potential runs we're giving up early are coming back to bite us later on as we work with no margin for error.

Y'know what's a good way to score first when you get a lead-off double with 2-3-4 in your lineup coming up? ... Swing the freakin' bats!!!!

Who knows, you might even put up a (dare I say it?) TWO-SPOT!

Gwreck
Jun 11 2009 09:16 PM

I disliked all three of the bunts.

What I really disliked was Jerry's incongruent strategy. He's playing for one run when his leadoff hitter is on in innings 1, 3 and 5, but then when the Phillies are threatening to tie, he plays the infield back and just lets them tie the game instead of trying to protect that precious one run.

Not many fans of the opposing team tonight, fortunately.

Nachos Grande were unexpectedly good at the park and a nice alternative, especially if getting to the CF food court is a pain (like it is from my seats).
