Perfect....

Up and at 'em boys....

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 13 2009 07:36 AM

I can't quite explain why, but when this thread reminded me of another Mets-Yankees clash today, I thought of this poem by Shel Silverstein:

]The Generals

Said General Clay to General Gore,

"Oh must we fight this silly war?

To kill and die is such a bore."

"I quite agree," said General Gore.

Said General Gore to General Clay,

"We could go to the beach today

And have some ice cream on the way."

"A grand idea," said General Clay.

Said General Clay to General Gore,

"We’ll build sand castles on the shore."

Said General Gore, "We’ll splash and play."

"Let’s leave right now," said General Clay.

Said General Gore so General Clay,

"But what if the sea is closed today?

And what if the sand’s been blown away?"

"A dreadful thought," said General Clay.

Said General Gore to General Clay,

"I’ve always feared the ocean’s spray,

And we may drown!" "It’s true, we may.

It chills my blood," said General Clay.

Said General Clay to General Gore,

"My bathing suit is slightly tore.

We’d better to on with our war."

"I quite agree," said General Gore.

Then General Clay charged General Gore

As bullets flew and cannons roared.

And now, alas! there is no more

Of General Clay or General Gore.

That about says it...Or as an embarrased Washingon Post writer Boswell went overtime into the anthem interviewing Earl Weaver, Weaver responded "Don't worry kid, we do this every day"

The team I love

1. Luis Castillo, 2B
2. Alex Cora, SS
3. Carlos Beltran, CF
4. David Wright, 3B
5. Gary Sheffield, DH
6. Fernando Tatis, 1B
7. Ryan Church, RF
8. Omir Santos, C
9. Fernando Martinez, LF
- Fernano Nieve, P

The team I despise with every fiber of my being

1. Derek Jeter, SS
2. Johnny Damon, LF
3. Mark Teixeira, 1B
4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B
5. Robinson Cano, 2B
6. Jorge Posada, C
7. Hideki Matsui, DH
8. Melky Cabrera, RF
9. Brett Gardner, CF
- Andy Patoot, P

The Yankees have another guy named Melky (Mesa) playing at Charleston. I had never heard that name before Cabrera made the majors, but for all I know it's relatively common in the D.R. I thought it might be a nickname, but Baseball Reference lists it as Cabrera's full name.

Chris Rose currently tongue-bathing Jeter. Fortunately, the sound seems to be out, except for the little whooshes that accompany the incessant graphics.

Every season Joe Buck's head looks more like a 60 watt bulb.

Swan Swan H
Jun 13 2009 02:19 PM

Buck and McCarver giving Castillo a more than fair treatment, offering excuses that Castillo himself would not take (wind), and giving him credit for standing up in the clubhouse yesterday and again today.

Meanwhile, Cora singles and moves up. Wright with an RBI shot.

Swan Swan H
Jun 13 2009 02:25 PM

Wright puts a good swing on it but it's an atom ball to left. Meanwhile, Nieve is throwing some early gas.

I write 'meanwhile' a lot. I should do soap opera summaries.

Everyone is saying they've never seen a game end like last night's. I remember listening to the end of this one in the car as I was going in to work the midnight shift. Pretty close.

Mets getting good swings against Andy Patoot. Martinez and Castillo set up Cora, 2 on, 2 out, but Jeter actually picks one to his left and Teixiera scoops the throw.

Lest you think this is a brand-new Met team-- healed by collective trauma, harder in the broken places (to borrow from Hemingway)-- we're at 5 LOB and counting.

Up 2-1, but it feels like they're losing.

Yes, because 1-hitters in which the Mets have the lead really suck.

3-1 and runners on the corners after a RiSP-y hit.

Love it kids.

See Tatis hustle? That was a result of my little imaginary speech last night.

Now that LOSER Tatis drives in another run. It's painful how well this team is doing in this game. I HATE them!

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

Sheff slaps the ball like it stole his money, and it's 3-1.

Fernando beats it into the dirt, and it's just as effective. 4-1, guys we love.

Buck is almost going out of his way to be nice to the Mets, exactly the opposite of what I expected from his usual frat-boy shtick. Maybe he feels like it would be piling on.

How 'bout this start by Nieve? Freakin' two hits through six in the band box.

Swan Swan H

A perfect inning by Nieve - gets out Damon, Teixiera and Cano, and hits Rodriguez with a fastball.

Robby Cano, YOU'RE fucking out, on a perfect 1-2 bounced curve.
Dare we ask for a 7th inning out of young Fernando the Third?

Runners at the corners as Gardner skates toward Beltrans soft liner. We need to cash in on the gift and add some insurance runs. The Mets have the Wright man at the plate.

Another nice job by Green, let's not forget. The Jeter hit was his usual bleeder, and he got the lefty Damon to wrap it up.

OE: But wait, there's more. Green waltzes through Teixiera, Rodriguez and Cano in the eighth. The corner has been turned, it seems.

This is a game that cannot be lost. If it were a three run lead and a save situation no one would be asking. Four runs is close enough to make this close enough for Frankie.

Apparently, our Chief Gangsta is only in favor of symbolic gestures that could boomerang on this team, long-term.

The other kind? The kind that, say, foment an atmosphere of accountability? Nah, not his style.

Being out golfing I was forced to listen to Waldman and Sterling for most of this game. Boy are they suck.

Good results though. I approve.
