Another Reason To Hate the MFYs

As if we needed another reason:

After a rehab appearance with Double-A Trenton, Yankees reliever Brian Bruney ripped Francisco Rodriguez to multiple news sources when asked about last night's game. Bruney's take:

"Unbelievable, I've never seen anything like that. I have, but in high school. Couldn't have happened to a better guy on the mound, either. He's got a tired act.

"He gets what he deserves, man. I just don't like watching the guy pitch. I think it's embarrassing."

The rant seems strange coming from Bruney, who has never played on the same team or even in the same division as K-Rod. But then again, the Yankees have a thing for making headlines.

Who makes more money? Who is actually in the Majors? Which team actually trusts them to play?

Man, he must really love this guy then.

I didn't think Francisco was all that bad before he joined the Mets and I just
don't see it now that he is one.

And if you listen to him in interviews he sounds like one of the nicest freakin'
guys you'd want to meet.

More people need to just shut their pie holes whenever a mic or some pen and
paper get put in front of them.

Brian Bruney. He of the 13-10 career record with 13 saves. F off, Brian.

American League pitchers can get away with crap like that because they never have to bat.
I wonder which one of his teammates will have to eat some horsehide (ahh, the good old days) for that?

True, but I doubt Rodriguez will ever get a chance to bat in the NL, either.

Apparently Bruney and Frankie exchanged some words during batting practice today.

Probably discussing where to go for zuppa di pesce after the game.

] As the Mets were stretching in the outfield as the Yankees took batting practice Sunday, there was a little commotion. K-Rod was pointing and gesturing at Brian Bruney. The two had to be separated. According to a witness, Bruney and Phil Coke approached K-Rod, hoping to make amends, but the Mets closer wanted no part of it and started getting animated. The Yankees' Jose Veras and Mets bullpen coach Randy Niemann eventually had to intervene. Players later were hugging in the outfield, including Alex Cora and CC Sabathia. So they exchanged words, almost blows, but probably not Christmas cards.

Was the witness a Yankee player?

In full view of a whole lotta folk, apparently.

From Marty Noble's MLB.com article:

]Mets players said Bruney didn't back off, but he said little and the Yankees' visible support of Bruney wasn't particularly strong. "I wasn't trying to go pick a fight," Bruney said after the game. "If anything, I was hoping we could cross paths and bury the axe. I think that it's ridiculous that this is a big story. ... To me, it's over with, and hopefully for him, it's over with. I don't think either of us are worried about it." Mets right-hander Mike Pelfrey said he interceded after the feud had simmered for "a minute or two" and that Jose Veras, a Yankees pitcher, had interceded on Bruney's behalf. "We stepped in before something happened," Pelfrey said. "It was getting a little hot. K-Rod went right up to him after we were done stretching and after he found out who he was. He really didn't know. He kept asking, 'Is that the guy?' "All he was saying was something like, 'If you have something to say, say it to my face.' And Bruney didn't say much at all."
Apparently, it was the only fun part of the day for the Queens nine.
]The Mets seemed to enjoy the confrontation, and how K-Rod handled it. "It was cool," outfielder Ryan Church said. "Frankie walked right up to him and got right in his face. And the kid didn't say a thing." "At least Frankie went to the guy," Alex Cora added. "I think it's better that way than to go from A to C and then to B. Through the papers, you don't really respect that."

They showed the whole thing on the 6 O'Clock News , funny stuff. Francisco just wouldn't go away and kept coming back to the guy. Bruney afterwards apologized about it , or as he said" I guess this is my apology to him"...

It was "handbags at six paces" as they say.

We would have all gotten a good laugh if they chose to duel with cream pies instead.

Willet Point - <i>"We would have all gotten a good laugh if they chose to duel with cream pies instead."</i>

That only would have made matters worse. Bruney would have missed wide with his toss and then Rodriguez would have creamed Bruney with a high hard one. Then the Yankees would have got upset by Frankie's victory celebration.

]"Rodriguez is totally bush league," Bruney commented shortly before his team's big matchup with the Laramie Tumbleweeds.

I'm disappointed that no one on our side is bright enough to come up with the obvious comparison to Joba.

Someone ask Bruney what he thinks of his teammates' actions, and whether that falls in with "how he was taught to play the game". And do it quick before I do it.

I don't think it's a matter of brightness (well, in some cases, at least-- these are professional ballplayers, not professional philology professors or mechanical engineers) as brazenness, or lack thereof.

The fact that dragging a Joba comparison into it might be construed as an "attack" on Joba himself-- unless done with extreme rhetorical skill, and maybe even then-- probably plays into it a little. Think anyone wants to answer that question from lazy reporters for 6 weeks?
