Rainy Day Trivia

Swan Swan H
Jun 18 2009 09:37 AM

I was going to save this for an off-day, but the next one is July 6 and I may be on Jury Duty that day, so here goes. I used the search function to see if this had been asked before, but couldn't find anything like it.

Thanks to Ben Grimm and his awesome UMDB for help in confirming the answer. The question:

Only two players have started at least one game for the Mets in every position in the batting order - 1 thru 9. Who dey?

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jun 18 2009 09:40 AM

1. Eric Valent

2. Derek Bell

PS -- total guesses.

Benny Agbayani.

<strike>Timoniel Perez.</strike>

Jay Payton.

Edgy gets Benny, the other three are not correct.

One down, one to go. Mr Cerf?

Negatory to Wiggy, and an 'up your nose with a rubber hose' to Horshack.

I hadn't thought - Ben's good deed means he can't play. I think he should get some parting gifts anyway.

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 18 2009 09:56 AM

I can make obviously wrong guesses though, can't I?

Is it... Rusty Staub?

Swan Swan H
Jun 18 2009 09:58 AM

You certainly can, and as you said Mr. Staub is obviously wrong.

d'oh! Already guessed. OK, not Wiggy.

How about... Matt Franco?

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 18 2009 10:00 AM

Marlene Dietrich?

Swan Swan H
Jun 18 2009 10:00 AM

Wiggy did 2 thru 8, but never 1 or 9 as a Met.

metirish
Jun 18 2009 10:01 AM

was thinking Matt Franco too , I'm guessing this player played under Bobby Valentine.

Swan Swan H
Jun 18 2009 10:02 AM

Franco was the same as Wiggy, 2-8 only.

We'll get to Dietrich when we talk about switch hitters.

seawolf17

Well, it has to be someone in the DH era, and it has to be someone who is light-hitting and/or fast enough to bat ninth, but with enough pop to bat fourth on a day when the big guys are resting, like in September.

Shinjo?

Edgy DC

I'm confident you are correct.

Swan Swan H
Jun 18 2009 10:05 AM

Shinjo it is.

A ton of guys hit 1-8 before interleague, but only Agbayani and Shinjo had the combination of being not painfully slow and powerful enough to bat fourth in some pretty bad lineups, yet still lousy enough to bat last.

Thanks for playing.

TransMonk

If Edgy's gonna scratch Timo, I'll guess him.

Doh...Edgy's so smart.

Worth playing for that summery alone.

Benjamin Grimm

To add to this, there are only two additional players (after Agbayani and Shinjo) who have batted both 4th and 9th. I discovered this when helping Swan Swan with his trivia question.

Anyone care to guess who the two players are?

Jun 18 2009 12:18 PM

Ryan Church

D Wright

Zeile.

Payton.

Not Church, not Wright. Not Zeile nor Payton.

Not Horshack, not Diaz, not Keppinger. And not whoever Johnny was thinking of.

And not Marlene Dietrich.

MFS62
Jun 18 2009 12:47 PM

point of order.
Are we talking about in the original posted batting order or as a result of double switches or pinch hitting?

I'll guess Rod Kanehl. (although methinks it would have happened in the DH era)

Later

Melvin Mora

Original posted batting order

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 18 2009 12:50 PM

We're talking starting lineup. So, no, it wouldn't be anyone from before interleague play. And it's not Melvin Mora, either.

Hint: He played for Art Howe.

Mora would have been my guess, but failing that, Phillips is a good guess also.

Vivian Vance is correct!

Wait, no...

Jason Phillips is correct!
