...and PETA doesn't like it!

]PETA is sending President Barack Obama a Katcha Bug Humane Bug Catcher, a device that allows users to trap a house fly and then release it outside. "We support compassion even for the most curious, smallest and least sympathetic animals," PETA spokesman Bruce Friedrich said Wednesday. "We believe that people, where they can be compassionate, should be, for all animals." During an interview for CNBC at the White House on Tuesday, a fly intruded on Obama's conversation with correspondent John Harwood. "Get out of here," the president told the pesky insect. When it didn't, he waited for the fly to settle, put his hand up and then smacked it dead. "Now, where were we?" Obama asked Harwood. Then he added: "That was pretty impressive, wasn't it? I got the sucker." Friedrich said that PETA was pleased with Obama's voting record in the Senate on behalf of animal rights and noted that he has been outspoken against animal abuses. Still, "swatting a fly on TV indicates he's not perfect," Friedrich said, "and we're happy to say that we wish he hadn't." Deputy press secretary Josh Earnest said the White House has no comment on the matter

PETA is even defending flies?

They're just trying to get your attention by glomming onto a larger thing. It's a skill they learned from their wilderness friend, the weasel.

The other day they sent out a missive decrying the throwing of the dead fish at Seattle's Pike Place market. Same thing.

Funny....

I saw the video of Obama swatting the fly , I was suitably impressed as I never seem to get the sucker.

This is the kind of stuff that makes me not take PETA seriously .

Nothing makes me take PETA seriously.

That fly video is one of the most awesome things ever. Sneak that onto YouTubeNorthKorea and it will cow Kim Jong Il. "You got nuclear weapons? Well, our president can catch a fucking fly with his hands."

When we were in Louisiana in April we took a swamp tour, and our guide was well past 80. As we were waiting around the cabin prior to boarding the boat, there were these giant horseflies buzzing around. The old guy grabbed a home-made fly swatter (with a big paddle) and knocked one of those guys out of the sky with just a flick of his wrist. It was very impressive. When I try to swat a fly I always end up waiting for it to land and then hope I'm quick enough to startle it. (I fail far more often than I succeed.) To see this old man get one in the air on his first try, and so effortlessly, was as cool as watching Carlos Beltran chase down a fly ball in the gap.

I remember trying to catch flies in the High School cafeteria. The idea was that you'd aim slightly above where the sucker was and he'd fly into your grasp if you timed it right. You could then spike him on the table and stun him at which point you'd have any number of options. The most inventive I remember was where one guy tied a strand of hair to the critter so when he recovered from his hangover and tried to fly away he'd be in for a surprise courtesy of the guy holding the other end.
