You can tune in here from work, it's a bit behind but not much. I tested this the last day game and I estimated the feed was about 15 - 20 seconds behind , or about the time it takes Wayne Hagin to catch up with events as they happen.

Sorry Wayne, taking the piss is all

A Spring Training pbp man for a lineup that has a long ST day trip look to it.

Gwreck

My impressions of Burkhardt is that he's been quite good at doing the play-by-play in Spring Training and that I expect SNY to lose him sooner or later for a better job.

Yeah he's not bad at all, this is apparently his dream job , doing what he's doing now so I wonder what it would take to entice him away.

Benjamin Grimm

Mets already down 1-0 as Cora leads off the first.

The RBI single looks like it could have been caught, but Fernando in center decided to play it on a hop.

Castillo gets a leadoff hit in the fourth. Let's see David hit one into the gap here...

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 25 2009 12:13 PM

Not quite, but still a good result. David hits a squib that the second baseman pounces on, but he can't do anything with it. Two on, none out, Church batting.

Keep up with the updates, my craneville ain't crane-ing.

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 25 2009 12:15 PM

Church hits one to almost the same spot. This time, it's Pujols who smothers it, and he gets the force at second.

First and third, one out, for Tatis.

Benjamin Grimm
Jun 25 2009 12:15 PM

Kevin B. tells us that Tatis has hit into a DP in five of his last six chances.

Not this time, though. He flares an RBI single to right and Castillo scores the tying run.

Thanks for the stattin'-- a 15 percent walk rate is a bit high to give to guys who take BP once a week. Could've sworn it was more; I've seen 4 Johan starts this year live, and he's walked the pitcher (Lowe, Shields and Zimmerman, respectively) in all but one of 'em (the 6-5 Phils win where he doubled).

[NOTE: When I started typing this, F-Me was coming up to bat. The inning is now over, after 7-- ! -- pitches.]

Trust? Gut rumblins? A weird managing-physick phenomenon whereby being around LaRussa makes him, conversely, less LaRussa-y with the matchups? (My bet's on the belly.)

Either way, defensive replacement Daniel Murphy (!) makes the snag, and Pedro puts down lil' Joe Thurston. All good.

Putting Albert on is just stupid. If we were on the road, with a runner on second and two outs? Maybe. Because an Albert homer loses the game.

But with two outs and nobody on at home? You pitch. Worst thing he does is hit a game tying solo homer, but then there's still two outs and nobody on, and we get another chance to bat.

Nymr83
Jun 25 2009 02:03 PM

whatever you want to call it, pujols was intentionally placed on 1st base. and i'm 100% behind that. i want to play to WIN, by avoiding the guy most likely to hit one out, instead of playing not to lose (which is what you do by pitching to him under the theory that the worst he can do is tie it)

I think it became more intentional as the count went on.
Balls one & two were both close. If he had gotten either or both of those calls then the rest of the AB plays out very differently. But once it got to 2-0 he wanted Albert to chase (which he didn't of course) because you certainly don't want to throw him a cripple pitch

Which is the way these things go.

But if you believe Gameday, he (1) started the guy off with a clear strike that the ump simply missed, (2) stuck with hard stuff, (3) was forced to be more careful as the at-bat proceeded.

He's a hard guy (the hardest guy) to pitch to, with a pitcher who gives up lots of walks, against a lineup that's less capable than others at making the pitcher pay.

Fman will have enjoyed this game, nice one for your first at Citi Field.

Indeed. Knowing Johan is toeing the rubber does lend confidence to the fan who only can get to 1-2 games per year.

Having said that, the most exciting play of the game aside from Evans' hit was the sliding catch by Fartinez in the 7th. He laid out with a one run lead and a runner on to end that inning.

Surprised the IGT'ers didn't mention it, but then I figure many of you were listening to the radio broadcast and wouldn't have seen it live.
