The pitcher we're facing - Rodrigo Lopez - is call-up making not only his Phils debut but also his first ML appearance since 2007 w/the Rox. He's replacing Anthony Bastardo who's on the shelf w/an injury after he was called up to replace the injured (and stupid) Brett Myers).
Lopez spent 2008 pitching only a handful of innings (injured I guess) in the lower levels of the Braves system, and 2009 to date at AAA for the Phils with decent results. He seems to keep the ball in the park and not walk too many (4 HR & 13 BBs in 13 starts/71 IP) which helps him get away with a hits>IP trend (83/71) and still keep the ERA low-ish at 3.91

He's the guy who used to wear No. 13 with the Os.

He pitched 5IP with the Braves last year. They picked him up last year, but he had Tommy John at the end of 2007. The Phillies signed him in March, where as you note, he's pitched okay.

Pitcher's back from Tommy John seem to pitch differently, so I'm not sure how his career factors in, but he's generally given up about a home run a game (and this is CBP, so inflate that) and has never been better than average.

I like this lineup, excepting Tatis for Castillo (think Tatis yesterday was the exception unfortunately, and Castillo gets on base. Not to mention defense)

Things swing on Livan. The Phillies haven't been hitting, so let's avoid waking the bats up and we should be able to sweep them. I think only Ruiz, Utley, and Victorino are hitting about .260 Let's try to keep the walks down, keep the home runs to solos, and win this.

Pittsburgh's starter yesterday, Maholm, has a better ERA than either of the Phillies starters this weekend (better than Hamels too, who again finds a way around pitching to the Mets) They've hit Moyer, and Blanton is hittable as well.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Jul 03 2009 05:33 PM

And there you are.

I'm not sure if it bears out in fact, but my monkey brain is telling me that Livan's one of the few Met starters who's managed not to hand over the store to opposing pitchers.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Jul 03 2009 05:46 PM

And the sac fly makes it 4. I have a feeling we'll get some back soon.

But Jebus Christ, he's getting hit hard-- how the hell Victorino's was the only hit, I don't know.

Gwreck
Jul 03 2009 05:47 PM

I was momentarily upset that Church didn't catch that ball, before I remember that I was just used to Beltran catching *everything.* Come back soon, Carlos.

Leadoff walk to Schneider. Livan needs to be hitting here. No bunts.

Well, we better start hitting.

Gwreck
Jul 03 2009 05:59 PM

Don't you fucking laugh, Nick Evans. There's nothing funny about you failing to give way to the centerfielder when you're supposed to. There's nothing funny about being down 5 runs. There was especially nothing funny about your misplay of Dobbs' flyball in the first inning.

Hey, even if they lose this game -- and there's still a lot of baseball, even with Chase Fucking Utley stealing bases with a seven-run fucking lead -- if they win the next two, they leave Philly tied. That's not so bad.

Chase Utley could have sex with about 5 Met wives in succession on top of the opposing dugout right now (with the Phanatic dancing around the cluster and hamming it up for the Jumbotron all the while) and not get pitched inside so much as once.

Sometimes, in weaker moments, I want 1-2 big, dumb assholes who are just asshole-y enough-- just shy of, say, Zambrano-level-- to put one in a guy's ear when he "needs" it. Like a team full of Ken dolls, we have no assholes.

Franco, for all his faults, had more than a bit of that. Before him, young Randall K, mebbe? Among non-pitchers, Knight and Mitchell. Bonilla, if you were small and bully-able and not in uniform.

Oh, yeah. I'm not saying we've had too many. And Lord knows, if we ever got a bullpen full of Farnsworths, I'm pretty sure I'd get the too-much-candy feeling pretty quickly. Like I said, weaker moments.

For some reason, Kevin Appier always struck me as a hard ass that would stick a fastball in your earhole. Of course, he only lasted one season with the Mets.

Tonights performance was weak. However, when a team is lacking their #1, #3, and #4 hitters and is forced to submit a lineup of subs anad scrubs each night, it is hard to realistically expect too much.

Those red hats are a disgrace. Half the teams in baseball wore them today and lost.

I agree that the red hats were disgraceful. Granted, it wasn't their decision, but the Mets deserved to lose just for wearing them.

The two points of the hat business are the PR boost of a public display of "patriotism" and money going to veterans' groups from selling the stuff, no?

So why make the teams advertise hats that look like crap with their respective uniform sets and probably won't sell too well to the fanbases (especially when in colors that reflect those of your favorite team's rival)? Why not produce three standard versions of the hats, in red, white and blue, and allow teams to select which color they'd like to advertise/sell?

Edgy DC
Jul 04 2009 01:24 PM

Or just slap a flag design on the back. Or have every team choose a design that they feel suits them.
