And that has prompted this little set of trivia questions. I'll post the answers late in the day tomorrow. I'm not going to give hints along the way. Everyone feel free to post your guesses and when I reveal the answers, you can see how you've done. (Mets wins and losses are combined in these totals; there's no distinction, for example, between 0-1 and 1-0.) Here we go... The Mets have played 7,625 regular and postseason games. How many distinct scores have there been? What is the most common score, and how many times has it occurred? Other than tie games, what is the closest score that has not yet been the final score of a Mets game? (30 total runs or fewer. We know that no game has ever ended with a score of 106-105, for example.) Of the final scores that have not yet happened, which score has the fewest combined runs? What score was the most lopsided in Mets history? (largest difference between the winning team's runs and the losing team's runs) What's the most lopsided shutout? What's the most lopsided score that has occurred more than once? (It's happened three times.) Whoever comes closest in each category gets a choice of a virtual shrimp platter or a virtual jar of jelly beans. We'll leave it on the honor system; I'm not promising I'm actually going to tally this stuff. (6-4, by the way, is the 18th most common final score in Mets history, and it's happened 147 times.) (But only 1-2 when the 11-0 game is on June 24. They had lost 11-0 on June 24, 1972 and June 24, 2008.) Of the 13 games, 8 were 9-inning shutouts: Losses to Reggie Cleveland in 1972 and Rick Rhoden in 1984, and wins by Tom Seaver (1976), Jon Matlack (1976), Sid Fernandez (1986 and 1989), Dwight Gooden (1988) and Tom Glavine (2005). There have been one-run games all the way from 1-0 to 13-12, so the highest-scoring one-run game that hasn't happened yet is 14-13. Of the final scores that have not yet happened, which score has the fewest combined runs? There's never been a 17-0 game. All possible scores with 16 runs or fewer have occurred. BONUS: The least-common score with a margin of fewer than five runs (excluding ties) is 10-6, which has only happened 30 times. What score was the most lopsided in Mets history? (largest difference between the winning team's runs and the losing team's runs) 26-7. Some of us may remember this one. (I know I do!) IIRC, this one was also declared to be "all Bobby's fault" by several on that forum -- a conclusion I dubbed "stupidity cubed".
