I went to the page and voted for that.....

I don't think people can actually sing the Curley Shuffle, they just liked the idea of it being played.
Most of the choices on that list are absolutely terrible.

All except "Meets the Mets" are terrible....I've no idea what "Mama Said Knock You Out " is.

There's nothing wrong with "Twist and Shout."
Mama Said Knock You Out is the best-known song by LL Cool J.

How about sounds of silence? And, no, I'm not talking about the Simon and Garfunkel song.

I like Twist and Shout. And I Like It Like That is also fun.
But none of them are Meet the Mets.
Any team can play those other songs, but only man can build a fortieth floor! I mean, only the Mets can play Meet the Mets!

What are they doing with the now outdated (and always lame) "hot dogs, green grass, all at Shea" line now that Shea is a parking lot? Are they going to be politically incorrect and bring back "bring the kiddies, bring the wife," (please, please) or is there some new set of lyrics?
I Googled "meet the mets" and checked mets.com and didn't find anything.

is there a write-in option?

The "Hot dogs, green grass, all at Shea" line is from the 1984 re-write of the song that is most commonly used on WFAN for the Mets Extra intro and outro. Interestingly, WFAN has edited the portion of the song they use to no longer contain the Shea reference.
Anyway, the lyrics of the original 1962 version are still used at <strike>Shea</strike> Citi Field:
Meet the Mets, Meet the Mets Step right up and greet the Mets Bring your kiddies, bring your wife Guaranteed to have the time of your life Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball Knockin' those home runs over the wall East side, west side, ev'rybody's comin' down To meet the M-E-T-S Mets of New York town.
Oh, the butcher and the baker and the people in the streets Where do they go? To meet the Mets! Oh, they're hollerin' and they're cheerin' and they're jumpin' in their seats Where did they go? To meet the Mets! All the fans are true to the orange and blue So hurry up and come on down 'Cause we've got ourselves a ball club, the Mets of New York town.
Give 'em a yell! Give 'em a hand! And let 'em know you're rootin' in the stands!
Come on and meet the Mets, Meet the Mets, Step right up and greet the Mets Bring your kiddies, bring your wife Guaranteed to have the time of your life Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball Knockin' those home runs over the wall East side, west side, ev'rybody's comin' down To meet the M-E-T-S Mets of New York town, of New York town!

When I was there last month, they didn't do the full lyrics of the song, just the more commonly known ones.
They skipped everything from "Oh, the butcher and the baker..." to "... the Mets of New York town." They did include the two lines starting with "Give 'em a yell!" which are also, I think, less well known.
The Mets broadcasts on Channel 9 used to have Meet the Mets as the opening theme song. They only played this part:
]Meet the Mets, Meet the Mets
Step right up and greet the Mets
Bring your kiddies, bring your wife
Guaranteed to have the time of your life
Because the Mets are really sockin' the ball
Knockin' those home runs over the wall
East side, west side, ev'rybody's comin' down
To meet the M-E-T-S Mets of New York town. |
For many many years, I thought those lyrics were the entire song. (I still remember that opening montage ended with a closeup of Cleon Jones sliding into home plate. I bet it's on YouTube somewhere...)

I suspect they don't want to be publicly bound to the popular choice.

I think that Chelsea Dagger by The Fratellis would work. Every Mets fan knows it--it's the song in the Amstel Light commercial.

I'll be honest. "Meet the Mets," while one of the best songs ever, isn't so perfect that it deserves permanent seventh- or eighth-inning enshrinement. It's a promotional song, and thus is aimed at people not at the ballpark to come on out and meet the Mets.
If it's to be played at the park, I think it should be played during the pre-game period to geet the people as they find their seats. While they've already "come down" and paid admission, they haven't yet stepped right up to greet the Mets, so it's still appropriate.
If you haven't stepped up to greet them after seven or eight innings in their ballpark, yo're never going to.

Yesterday it was "Meet the Mets" and I could not have been happier.
Silence also would've worked, sure, but that was in short supply in between innings at Citi Field.

Is that the ad that starts with an old man screaming something in Dutch? That always has me diving for the mute button.

Same one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chelsea_Dagger
It's played at sports events around the world. But now I see that the Rays are currently using it so forget it... it's not like the Mets to do something unoriginal.

I actually wouldn't mind "Mama Said Knock You Out." There's an appropriate local tie (LL Cool J's born/raised in Jamaica). And it's fun, bragging, pump-you-up stuff, workable for both leading and comeback situations.
But, hey, we did Brand Nubian and Whodini at karaoke the other night, so early-90s LL Cool J is kind of in my taste wheelhouse.

Of course, he pulls out his jammy in verse two. At least he made it to verse two!
Then he finishes that verse by knocknig back a 40. And goes on to empty a shotgun on a killing spree.
Metahorically.
The song has no chance.
