Post Mortem: Phillie Series

I don't know what makes the lack of extra-base hits more glaring --- the fact that they all came in one inning or that our inability to otherwise register any came in a park where they are notoriously cheap to come by.

And the opposing starting pitchers were (at least in the first two games) guys we could have reasonably expected to suck.

I knew it was a lost weekend but seeing the numbers there all neat like hammers it home . Even when the Mets had some hard hit balls the Phillies made some great defensive plays like Howard's or the hard hit balls were hit right at the defensive player.

But those things happen in most games and for everything that the Mets sucked at the Phillies seemed to excel at this weekend.

Pedro Feliz was a vacuum.

If Phillie had any mental block about winning at home, the Mets sure took a nice step to help them over the threshold.

I think the loss of Beltran was just the last straw for our guys. They seemed to be hanging tough until then.

No Beltran definitely hurts.

But Cora has been putrid since returning from his injury early, Muffy still isn't hitting enough, Tatis is way overexposed and Santos has been hitting like shit. Fartinez has been scuffling and now he's apparently hurt.

I gotta say it, Sheffield is damn near this year's MVP.

Feliz is almost always a vacuum.

I never realized exactly how good he was until I got reserved seats on the 3rd-base side at CBP-- he's constantly adjusting his position on hitters even during an at-bat. He's never out of position on right-handed hitters (turning smashes by Sheffield and Wright into routine grounders), and only ever seems to get beaten down the line on fluky flares by lefties.

Jerry's default slotting of Cora at short and on top of the lineup day-in and -out is frustrating me as much as his actual play.

A fractured finger ain't a box of chocolates.

Some of our lack of power is in the nature of our roster. Cora and Castillo are both slugging in the .320s, but I don't know if we have the right to expect much more than that from them. The same is true for Jeremy Reed.

But we have a number of guys (Murphy, Tatis, and Church) who've cut their strikeout rates significantly down and have sub-.400 slugging percentages to show for it (not to mention, in Tatis' case, a shitload of double plays). I almost get the feeling that Hojo should tell them to do the opposite of whatever he's told them to do up to this point.

Wright, of course, is at the opposite extreme, striking out a lot but still with a high batting average. But where is his power?

(PS We have more home runs in fewer games at home than on the road, so it's definitely not the park.)

Yes.

Flexibility and depth were a real advantage of this team until it was forced to become rigid and shallow.

Hey WTF is wrong with Reyes anyway. Does his vag hurt or something?

Unless you want to entertain the intriguing but hard-to-back-up argument that changing their approaches to suit their home park has carried over to the road.

Hey it's the sadist thread.
