Say a prayer for my wife

HahnSolo
Jul 03 2009 08:59 AM

I kind of feel a need to vent, and hope you guys understand....

I want to let you all know that my wife, Larissa is in the hospital. On Tuesday she began getting flu or stomach-virus like symptoms. After a trip to the doctor on Wednesday, her fever went down the next morning. But, she soon started to have shortness of breath and hyperventilation. Back to the doctors, where he was unable to get a blood sample or take a pulse. Her extremities were already not receiving enough blood. So she was rushed to Good Samaritan in Suffern.

Without going into too much detail, and I certainly will forgot some important details, Larissa has a really bad infection. Unfortunately the doctors at this time do not know the root cause.

So, Bad News first: Her kidneys are infected and had shut down. Her liver is infected. Her temperature spiked as high as 104, and her pulse rate was as high as 175 (which I am told is really high), and her blood pressure was down around 40. Without pulling any punches, I was told by two physicians that there was a chance she would not survive the night.

Now the good news. First and foremost, she did survive the night. Her temperature is back to normal. Her pulse rate is down to 140 (still high, but much better than where we were), and her blood pressure was steady at around 90. She had some minor urine discharge overnight as well. This is good because: a) she hadn't urinated the past two days, and b) it shows there is some sign of life in her kidneys. Other good news: her chest xrays showed clear lungs, her heart is good and young, and no signs of brain damage.

So where are we now? The doctors are somewhat encouraged that she took positive steps last night. Right now they are trying to maintain her bp around 90 and get her pulse rate down. Today could be a big day: there are cultures results coming back, plus some other tests. The longer her body can repel the infection, even in small steps, the better. Fingers crossed that we can get a grip on what the infection is. I spoke with multiple doctors today. There is still a chance she might need a dialysis on her kidney, but (and here is more good news), he wants to wait six hours to see. He doesn't feel it is an immediate need.

And please, Mets, for the love of God, do something right for a change and sweep the fuckin' Phils. Do it for Larissa.

Han - all the best of good vibes to Larissa.

It does sound serious, but her overnight progress was very encouraging.

Hang in there. Vent away however much you need to, and keep us informed about Larissa's progress.

Keep after the doctors and hospital staff and make sure they remember
there are no holiday weekends in that business. Sometimes the hospital
can go into cruise control over a long weekend.

It sounds like your wife was septic - mom went through this about 2 months ago - it was a real scary time for us. She's completely recovered now, and I pray for the same thing for your wife.

Wow, thanks for the response.

An update: she had a good day today, taking small, baby steps (not literally). Blood pressure is strong, lungs strong, fever stayed down. Kidney and liver are still problem areas, but she is getting some urine out, which is a good sign.

Gotta go (little kids with lots of questions), but will do my best to keep you guys updated.

And yes, the CCU unit has SNY. I saw that debacle.

That all sounds like excellent news. Continued good vibes for Larissa!

How they could air SNY in a CCU is a mystery. That's the last thing a sick person needs.

Glad Mrs. Solo is on a road to recovery, or hoping that to be the case.

Hahn Solo, I just saw this...I hope and pray she is continuing to improve.

HahnSolo
Jul 06 2009 10:23 AM

Thanks again everybody. The hopes and prayers we are getting from friends, family, (you guys too!) mean a lot.
At this time she has suffered no setbacks. She is still critical, but is making some nice progress with her blood pressure, oxygenation, pulse rate, and temperature.
They even took her off her paralyzing agent for a while and she was quite cognizant of her surroundings and moving her hands (quite demonstratively, I might add).

So things are hopeful up in Suffern. Not so much in Flushing.

Jul 11 2009 07:26 AM

Been a few days with an update, but things are really looking up.

We are not out of the woods entirely, but we've emerged from the deep stuff, and now we can see the sun through the tree coverings.

She is awake and alert, talking, complaining (that's actually a good thing), and on the road to recovery. Her kidneys are still not quite where they need to be (though she has had a couple of positive dialyssis procedures), but they are confident she will be able to get her kidneys going again on their own.

Also her room is now Infection Free, meaning we can bring things in, and we don't have to suit up in mask and gown to see her.

Otherwise there are no major setbacks to this point. Still in CCU, but again that is good...you get more attentive care as a CCU patient than you do as a "regular" patient. But they will reevaluate on Monday to see if she is OK to go to the general population (is that a hospital term or a prison term?).

Thanks again for all your support. Give me two weeks and I should be back to bitching about Manuel, Omar, and the medical/training staffs.

Swan Swan H
Jul 11 2009 07:44 AM

I was really hoping that no news was good news, and here it is. Great stuff, Hahn, and it sounds like her medical staff deserves no bitching.

Make sure she has some cigarettes to trade for favors when she goes into the general population.

Remember hearing my grandfather talk again for the first time after he went briefly comatose following chemo for liver cancer. He opened his eyes, croaked a cough... and called the nurses racist. "And," he hissed, "I think they're talking about me! Jerks!" I don't think I've laughed so hard since.

So very glad to hear the ol' lady's in complaining shape, herself.
