]Palin to resign as Alaska governor Former vice presidential hopeful says she won't finish out first term BREAKING NEWS NBC News and news services updated 4:03 p.m. ET, Fri., July 3, 2009 WASILLA, Alaska - Sarah Palin announced Friday she plans to resign as governor of Alaska in a few weeks, saying she will try to "affect positive change" from outside government. Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate in 2008, made the announcement at a press conference Friday. She said the decision has been "in the works" for a while and comes after "prayer and consideration." She is handing the reins over to Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell, who will be sworn in on July 25. Parnell and most of Palin's cabinet were present at the announcement. "We know we can affect positive change outside government at this moment in time on another scale and actually make a difference," she said, adding that politics had become a "superficial, wasteful bloodsport." Some have speculated in the past that Palin may be interested in running for president in 2012, but she did not mention running for another office. Palin was elected Alaska's youngest and first woman governor in 2006 at age 42. She was the surprise pick of Arizona Sen. John McCain as running mate in the 2008 presidential election. She was only the second woman to appear on a major party presidential ticket — Democrat Geraldine Ferraro was the first when she ran unsuccessfully for vice president with Walter Mondale in 1984. © 2009 msnbc.com

Two things about Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell:

1. He has the same initials as Sarah Palin!
2. Does that mean that the Mets will have to call up a new reliever to replace him in their bullpen?

It's tough to live in Wasilla, govern in Juneau, and campaign for president in the lower 48. Something's gotta give.

Frayed Knot
Jul 03 2009 02:39 PM

I predict Governor Parnell will be a great state exec for the first month or so causing the citizens of Alaska to think great things about their future with this new relief governor at the helm.
But then both his performance and the elecorate's faith in him will start to decline to the point where people will openly contemplate the possibility of swapping him in for outside help.

That's my thought. Regardless of your political leanings, how can you support a person for the highest office in the land if she can't even hack her own state?

Edgy DC
Jul 03 2009 06:32 PM

I don't support her for the highest office, but I don't think one has to conclude that resigning is tantamount to an inability (or an admission of inability) to hack.

seawolf17
Jul 03 2009 06:36 PM

If she was leaving FOR a higher office, then no, it wouldn't be. Like if she had been appointed to a federal position of some kind, or had been elected to Senate or something. But this doesn't appear to be that.

Maybe she's pregnant again.

I bet she'll now "retire" to the speaking circuit and earn millions (to fund her future campaigns).

if she doesnt feel she wants to govern anymore then i respect her for stepping down instead of mooching paychecks from the state and doing a half-ass job because she doesnt want to be there anymore. thats the right thing to do. But unless she has a DAMN good explanation for it it completely wrecks her as a valid candidate for the presidency in my eyes.

My guess is she ends up with a Fox News slot. That seems to be her more natural metier than governing.

This, more or less, was her explanation. ("From the people that brought you the non-apology apology...") From politico.com:
]Even those who were less critical of her choice were taken aback by Palin’s rambling, hard-to-follow news conference by the side of a lake outside her home. The performance had shades of Richard Nixon’s “You won’t have Dick Nixon to kick around anymore” news promise in 1962, as well as Mark Sanford’s bizarre exercise in self-revelation just last month. Palin mixed analogies to herself as a basketball player who knows “when it’s time to pass the ball” with bitter commentary against “political operatives [who] descended on Alaska—digging for dirt” as part of a “superficial, wasteful political bloodsport.” “Palin is at her best when she’s being folksy but there is no way to be folksy when you’re resigning as governor,” said veteran GOP strategist Dan Schnur. She portrayed her resignation as a selfless choice done for the good of Alaskans. She said they will now be free of the expensive and distracting—and she said bogus—ethics inquiries generated by her new prominence. “Some Alaskans, maybe they don’t mind wasting public dollars and state time, but I do,” she said.

Maybe Playboy in her future???? There will be no more or higher elected office. Unless there's a compelling family reason (and she probably would have disclosed such if applicable), resigning is quitting and no one likes a quitter. Stick a fork in her; she's done.

a snippet

The response in the main stream media has been most predictable, ironic, and as always, detached from the lives of ordinary Americans who are sick of the “politics of personal destruction”. How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country. And though it's honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make. But every American understands what it takes to make a decision because it’s right for all, including your family.

I'd guess that if she wanted Young's house seat (he's in his mid 70's) when he retires she'd win it easily. but i agree she's done as far as national office.

RealityChuck
Jul 06 2009 08:05 AM

It'd be hard for her to make a case for being elected president in 2012. By resigning, she shows that she doesn't have any interest in actually governing. If you're going to challenge Obama, you're going to have to say you can govern better than he does, and this leaves her open to attacks that when the going got tough, Palin got going.

Her weirdest statement was the one to the effect that she was quitting because she's no quitter.

It's been pointed out that politicians who quit their post in order to run for president do very badly. People point to Reagan and Carter -- both ex-governors -- but Reagan had completed two terms and Carter was ineligible to run again. Both finished their terms, too.

It's strange that all the newer Republican contenders have shot themselves in the foot one way or another for 2012. That leaves Huckabee and Romney to duke it out, and if Gingrich runs, Romney gets the nod.

Oh Lord, I hope this is true.

I smell a scandal, not yet known publicly, that will break soon, involving her. Maybe involving, uh, "goat play," or a bukkake video with play by play commentary done by Joe Buck.

Call me when her porno comes out.

She'll be the RNC Rain Maker for the mid-term elections. She's already selling out venues and raking in cash for candidates. They'll repay her by endorsing her candidcacy for 2012. Back scratchers all.

I have said it many times, and I mean no offense to any CPF'er to which this applies, but it merits repeating.

We should have let the South secede and form its own country, and then us Northern folks would have been spared the conservative Christian creationist Bible Belt idiocy that makes civilized Americans look like penny eating Pete Rose haircutted Ameri-tards.

For all the characterization of New York as a liberal nirvana, in my experience the majority of hardcore right-wingers I've met are from New York City. I think its one of those things that's just due to the city's size - more Irish than Ireland, more Jews than Israel, and more ditto-head wingnuts than Wyoming, Alaska, and Kansas put together.

New York-- like most ultrabig cities-- is liberal more for pragmatic reasons than by any inclination, methinks. You see a LOT more social-liberal libertarian than old-school liberal 'round these parts.

And I didn't mean that NYers are smarter/savvier than others, in terms of seeing through BS (although I'm not complaining about THAT characterization); I just meant that the rural-trappings-as-signifiers thing doesn't seem to be the brand of political stagecraft to which we're particularly succeptible... and the coasts, hidden conservative streak or no, are not where sorta-populists like Palin are aiming their sights.
