Reyes walked, barely made it back on a close pickoff attempt, then DID make it back and got called out anyway. Truly, a blown call. WWSB showed a tiny amount of unhappiness with the call, leaving the dugout to write a polite note to the umpire.

Matsui wiffed on a pitch in the dirt, Beltran walked and Wright grounded into a FP.

Dear Mr. Miller,

Please forgive this interruption in tonight's game, but I am compelled to point out to you that, although I am not positioned at your vantage point and I respect your abilities, training and experience, as a "winner" who does things properly, far be it from me to question your judgement but allow me to express the potential of a disagreement, not really a potential disagreement a possible difference of opinion, as to the safety of my shortstop on that recent play at first base.

Far be it from me to expect you to change your ruling on this matter, as I intend to obey the rules, and I deeply respect and trust in the authority that comes with the Major League umpiring uniform, and your clean-shaven face, nor do I have any expectation that at some other point in this game or any other we may have the pleasure of sharing in the future, that any semblance of a "make-up" call be required. Indeed, Mr. Miller, I expect nothing other than to demonstrate concern for my fine young charges and by example teach them to play the game the "right way," and so please understand Dir Sir it is with great regret and a sense of duty that I am compelled to say I am surprised that a gentleman as accurate and precise as yourself appears to have maybe perhaps committed an rare error of judgement this first inning.

Until our next meeting, hopefully under more pleasant circumstancse I remain your most humble servent sincerely,

William S.B. Randolph

P.S.: Mr. Meintiewicz said "cough-sufferer."

It's always nice when Marlon throws out Marlon.

For posterity, Anderson caught a foul pop in fairly shallow left, and threw a one hopper to Castro. A nice tag by Castro, catching it on the left side of the plate on the left side of his body and bringing the ball bag to apply the tag.

I hope not.

He's been hitting like 380 since his return.

The fans should actually be extra nice and bow to him.

Elster88
Sep 13 2005 08:48 PM

A very Ichiro-esque hit for Kaz there. With two strikes, he fouled off the high curve, and you could tell he was following it perfectly. Then he went down for the curve off the shoetops, not fooled at all, and lined it over the third baseman's head.

A perfect throw gets him on the steal attempt, but he took third when the ball was bounced into center.

Beltran, of course, grounds out to end the inning. I almost felt like joining in with the boo birds. Instead I yelled, "Get him next time, Carlos!".

Grrrrr.

One life --- I'm gonna live it up!
I'm takin' flight I said I'll never get enough!
Stand tall --- I'm young and kinda proud!
I'm on top as long as the music's loud!

If you think I'll sit around as the world goes by
You're thinkin' like a fool cause it's a case of do or die
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
You think I'll let it go you're mad
You've got another thing comin'!

That's right, here's where the talkin' ends!
Well, listen, this night there'll be some action spent!
Drive hard; I'm callin' all the shots!
I got an ace card comin' down on the rocks!

If you think I'll sit around while you chip away my brain
Listen I ain't foolin' and you'd better think again
Out there is a fortune waitin' to be had
You think I'll let it go you're mad
You got another thing comin'!

In this world we're livin' in we have our share of sorrow
Answer now is 'don't give in'; aim for a new tomorrow...!!

Oh, so hot, no time to take a rest yeah!
Act tough, ain't room for second best!
Real strong, got me some security!
Hey, I'm a big smash! I'm goin' for infinity, yeah!

Don’t tell me what I will do, ‘cos I won’t.

Greg at Faith and Fear in Flushing had some good points about the person who truly deserved to be shot -

]Rule 7.13(j): A runner occupying first base is entitled to second base when the batter hits the ball safely into centerfield unless the runner's head is occupying 50.1% or more of the inner portion of his own ass.

............................................................

But really. Thrown out at second on a single to center? I've seen Met baserunners (what other kind?) get picked off during intentional walks, but they at least had the excuse of getting distracted by a pretty moth or something. What was Offerman looking at? Doesn't the Players Association have a pretty bitchin' vision plan? Hasn't sitting in the first base dugout for almost three months allowed him the time to read every ad on the third base side of Shea? What else was there to watch but the ball whiz past the pitcher, the second baseman and the shortstop?

Ok. At what point does Ashton Kutcher show himself, act like an annoying jerk and announce we've all been punked and that the last two weeks don't count.
