In the first Fran busted out his "Seo has gained cahnfidence and swagger on the mound and was immediately (like, before he finished his sentence) shot down by Ralph who said it's got nothing to do with that, it's because he gained a curveball and split-finger fastball. Nice retort by Kiner with a minimum of phlegm in his throat.

Only in the sense that the Mets aren't carrying reserve outfielders except Williams, who hits like an infielder.

I imagine that a listing of the number of outfield appearances and starts given to Cairo, Woodward, and Anderson (and others) would be chilling.

No 1st base for Mike.
Gerald Williams to RF, Cairo to 1st.

They apparently didn't pull them in until it was 3-2 figuring that with the runner on the move (he was on each of the foul balls) you wouldn't get the DP anyway so try and cut down the run.

But as mentioned above with the runner off on the pitch it's unlikely that ANY ground ball would have been a DP.

Looper's inability to get the job done recently, combined with WWSB's inhuman patience, is a match made in Metfan Hell.

Well, Piazza was burned (although I still hate that he hasn't been occasionally returned to first this season), but Woody and Self were there.

I'm so all over the Bobby Valentine movement. (Like I wasn't always there.)

Even when I agree with Randolph, his persepctive seems so narrow.

Hey, Davey Johnson's almost done with his World Cup obligation.

I'm rambling. This is world-class tanking.

Johnny Dickshot
Sep 15 2005 05:26 PM

The one thing you could say for Randolph all year is that now matter how many times it appeared we were about to lose 15 of 18, we didn't.

What I miss with Valentine is that feeling that even though we might be giving away talent in an individual matchup, we'd rarely be giving away a game tactically or strategically.

But wishing him back at this juncture is just begging to for disappointment. WWSB is gonna be here at least until Beltran & Pedro trash him in the papers.

Nats 6 Mets 5 (10)

We did a lot of second guessing in the stands. Why did Castro bunt in the sixth and in the tenth? Cairo and the pinch hitter were on deck in both situations. I'd just as soon have Castro swinging away then move the runners up for the bottom of the lineup. The best logic seemed to be defensive - Castro bunted to stay out of the Double Play. That's a horrible reason to bunt, one generally reserved for pitchers.

Piazza hit with the bases drunk, two out in the seventh. Travis Hughes came into the game to induce a ground out and quash the threat.

Brad Oster and Hunter Foster of the Producers sang the National Anthem.

The Game was sparsely attended. Attendance drops to flies when the Mets are out of the race, but a warm September afternoon, I though, could have horned a few more fannies in the joint. Not that I was complaining about all the room.

I wish I could remember more about the song they played when Heilman warmed up to ask about it, but I can't. It would have been nice if they dusted off Aldo Nova when Mike Stanton warmed up, but Take it Easy by the Iggles was a nice alternative.

I wanted to hit Woodward for Cairo in the tenth. Nyer seemed to agree, but Willie's the vote that counts.

The news said that Willie Randolph did not recommend calling up Anderson hernandez because he felt Cairo and Matsui deserved to finish out the season.

Shingo Takatsu has the slowest changeup ever. Even slower than Chris Hammond. 58 mph.

We also wondered why cordero didn't close out the game for the Nationals.

This was another one of those days where you thank the heavens for the cool breeze in the upper deck, as the humidity was ghastly. I pity the fool who sat in the mez, loge, and field box.

Joey Eischen must lead the league in IBBs. He also looks like he's throwing up when he pitches from the stretch, a la Mussina. I saw Eischen pitch to one batter in a game at the New Vet just before the all star break. He came in to pitch to one batter, who he intentionally walked, then left the game. Hey Frobby, what's the point?

By homering and singling in his first two at bats, Guzman staved off falling below the Mendoza line again. Robinson says he will sit Guz eggs if he is hitting .1995 on the final day of the season, because it rounds off to .200.

Valadius

I've figured it out. It's all my fault.

Willie's logic in pitching to Castilla - as I suspected - was that he figured Frank Robbie would counter with a lefty stick, probably Schneider.

"counter with a lefty arm"

Well yeah, but that means you're taking out one of your top guys and subbing in a situational part-timer. That's worse IMO. At that point it's gotta be Robo's job.

"Or we could try and find a closer who can get lefties out. Like Heilman or Robo, for example."

This was during Robo's stint.

The best play there IMO was to have him walk Castilla and take the chances with whatever Robbie countered with. If it was Schneider the lefty then so be it and let Robo after him. If he was hurt and unavailalbe then just about anybody else - and especially Osik - was the better option for us.

Edgy DC
Sep 16 2005 10:02 AM

Well, as I said, I'm just grrr. I take it all back.

When Hernandez is telling the papers that he got Castilla the last eight times (not true, by the way), it looks like Randolph is losing the confidence of his staff.

Nonetheless, Hernandez had a chance to get out of it.
