LOS ANGELES - A large portion of Los Angeles was blacked out Monday when electrical power was lost. The power got knocked out shortly before 1 p.m. after two power surges. Traffic lights throughout downtown and the San Fernando Valley were not working, causing major traffic problems, according to video from helicopter news crews. Downtown highrises also were darkened. The city's department of water and power said it was investigating the cause and extent of the outage.

LOS ANGELES, California (CNN) -- About 700,000 electric customers in Los Angeles lost power Monday afternoon after a worker mistakenly cut a wrong line, triggering a cascade of problems in the city's power grid, a spokesman for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power said.

Power is being restored in most places and should be restored everywhere by 5 PM PT. LA just doesn't know how to have a good long blackout like New York.

I read the first post at work.
Then, while on my way home, my wife called me to say we had a power outage at home. Got a nice scare until I turned on my car radio to WCBS All news and heard the scope of the LA outage.
They weren't related.
Phew!

How long has it been since that power outage that took out the whole east coast?
