IGT, 7/9, Dodgers @ Mets

It's Randy Wolf at Livan Hernandez as the the series comes down to one game. Wolf has been pitching well. Hernandez has not. I'm tossing that out the window.

Damn Dodgers with all their pretty good hitters arriving at the same time. I can't get 'em straight. I picture Ethier as the man of color and Matt Kemp as the blancito. In fact, it's largely the opposite (Ethier being Franco-Mexican-American).

Ethier 4/10/1982
Martin 2/15/1983
Loney 5/7/1984
Kemp 9/23/1984

Nice little nucleus Joe Torre arrived in time for.

James Loney, to me, is the name a longtime roleplaying NBA forward. I picture a so-named guy with long limbs, but not enough meat on his bones for big forward and not enough shooting range for small forwards. He's great off the bench for shutting down the smaller guys, but you can only spot him against the bigger ones. He's also good for a big rebound, but gets in foul trouble if he spends too much time in the paint.

Anyhow, speaking of guys who belong in another sport, Jonathan Broxton hasn't appeared in this series. Let's keep that going. The good way.

By narrowing the gate to the bullpen?

I think we should kick Randy Wolf's ass twice this game. Once for him and once for his brother's shitty game last week.

No Reed?

Cora's batting eighth. Which means Jerry has given in to the persuasive power of reason.

With Livan in the lineup I'd hit Cora 9th. And that's only because he can't hit 10th.

F. Martinez to the DL (after, what, a week?), and back, by popular demand, you know him, you love him, you can't live without him, ladies and gentleman...

A. Reyes!

Oh, fuck him. Jesus.

What is wrong with the Mets?

Edgy DC
Jul 09 2009 01:55 PM

Well, whatever they did. They needed an infielder.

bmfc1
Jul 09 2009 01:56 PM

JCL: great response--it made me laugh (perhaps to avoid from crying that A. Reyes is the best call-up that our team can come up with).

metirish
Jul 09 2009 01:56 PM

Maybe A. Reyes hadn't actually left the building after getting sent back the other day so this was easier......I'm clutching for a reason.

Perhaps either field gangsta Manuel or chief gangsta Minaya is a "Wire" fan?

In pregame interview with Wayne Hagin, Murph was asked about having conversations with baserunners at first. He explained that he won't say much beyond "nice at-bat" or "nice swing" and then it's up the baserunner to "conversate".

Ladies and gentlemen, a verb is born. Or perhaps bornated.

Dodgers hang four on the Mets in the first.......I've gone to games where I am a bit late and you walk in and see that many runs on the board ,it's depressing to say the least.

Turned radio on in bottom of first. "I couldn't have missed much," I thought. First thing I hear is, "The Mets have been forced to play several players out of position this year, and Nick Evans isn't a leftfielder."

Oh.

Turned on radio in bottom of second. Howie and Wayne were discussing the 1985 26-7 loss to the Phils. I thought, "Holy Gorman, it's got to be, like, 11-1 if they're talking about this."

6-1 felt a little less bad for it. So thanks, guys.

6-2 now.

Hey look, we're getting some knocks off this fish. But Santos = very bad.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

And that Furcal double's why I like the Pagan-Reed-Church (or Reed-Pagan-Church) alignment for our SHaMs.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jul 09 2009 06:33 PM

Oh fuck another casual play in the infield costs us. Bad call but still...

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Jul 09 2009 06:34 PM

Nice snag by Castillo, but a little relaxed on the toss to Cora to double up Furcal. Still, the inning should be over. 2nd-base ump-- Hirschbeck?-- fucked that up.

Frayed Knot
Jul 09 2009 06:37 PM

That wasn't a casual play. Castillo had to wait until Cora got there.
Everything was perfect IMO except the call. ('nother story w/Sheffield in RF).

And I know it especially seems this way when you're losing, but it sure seems like we're getting dicked on a lot of calls lately.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jul 09 2009 06:39 PM

Castillo seemed to soft-toss it, and Cora took his time getting over. It was closer than either guy imagined seemed to me.

of course we get a gift back after Livan fucks it into 2 runs.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Jul 09 2009 06:50 PM

Um, I like Misch and all, and I'm the first one to warn against overreacting to splits... but might it not be a good idea to avoid popping in a lefty when the Dodgers kick the living crap out of lefties?

Christ, why couldn't Livan just stay in to play first? At least HE's getting good at-bats against Wolf.

PiggiesTomatoes
Jul 09 2009 07:09 PM

Is it me or am I imagining this. It seems the Dodgers are hitting the ball hard -- not necessarily out of the park but driving the ball on a line and with a purpose. Mets just seem to be dinking and dunking. More often than not lazy flies, rolling over ground balls, etc.

Oh look, Jerry's looking to Stoke the fire with Brian.

This is not uncommon during Livan starts-- when a soft-tosser gets hit, he gets hit hard.

I know. But I'm delusional. I keep thinking they can hold on just a little longer.

Loney walk leaves the bases drunk... for Martin, again.

Perhaps if Stokes can get this right, the fates will reverse history, and the 2 runs will never have happened. (Like "Quantum Leap," but with less offense.)

I like how Ron declared it a blowout at 10-2. I think that could have been called at 4-0.

Gary and Ron seem to think the alternative is to talk about Mattingly.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

Chan Ho Park sucks horribly in the rotation, goes to middle-relief limbo. He concentrates on keeping mistakes down, and ends up being a lights-out, multi-inning middle-reliever, helping solidify a shaky Philly pen.

Tim Redding sucks horribly in the rotation, goes to middle-relief limbo. Now he's suckiness concentrate, one inning of mistakes down at a time.

Amen, PT. I know there are hours of blowout to fill, but what an odd digression. "Better chemistry than Mets teams with better records." One infers that not only is team chemistry overrated, it's something you don't want.

That was fucking awful.

Great to meet Triple D. Sorry I won't be around to see everyone else on Sunday afternoon but was nice to meet our Australian correspondent.

True story: Walk down to the Caesar's Club level where the usher demands my ticket. He tells me my section is upstairs and I say "yeah, I know. I came down to say hi to a friend in section 330." Has no response and lets my by. Worth remembering this for the future.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jul 09 2009 08:56 PM

Yesterday just for fun my brother and I stopped in the Promenade Club which our tickets don;t allow us. The chick at the door asked to see the tix and lets us in. I remark at that point that I'd been denied entry with the same tickets before and she basically admits she didn't look real hard at our tickets anyway, and that we're not supposed to be there but have fun anyway.

She was kinda cute.

"Tim Redding sucks horribly in the rotation, goes to middle-relief limbo. Now he's suckiness concentrate, one inning of mistakes down at a time."

Jason Marquis was a FA, like Redding. Marquis is a NYker and I'm sure would rather have pitched in NY than Colorado but our genius GM went after Redding instead.

I'm pretty sure Jason Marquis was traded from the Cubs to the Rockies.

From Wikipedia:

On January 6, 2009, Marquis was traded to the Colorado Rockies for pitcher Luis Vizcaíno. General Manager Dan O'Dowd said "We like (Marquis') athleticism, age and durability."

You are correct. Of course, our GM could have traded for him.

Gwreck gave me the same advice.

The Yanqui fan (from CT) sitting next to me said: "Judging from your accent, you must be from Long Island"

IIRC, they were interested in Heilman from the get-go (as the later deal to get him confirmed), but wanted more peripheral parts from Omar. Then the Mariners thing happened.

Jul 10 2009 10:57 AM

I thought this was interesting about him

]

On September 26, 2008, the Cubs post-season roster was announced, and Marquis was granted a roster spot as a reliever. Marquis thereby reached the playoffs in all nine of his major league seasons through 2008.. He made one appearance against the Dodgers in Game 1 of the National League Division Series, when he pitched the top of the ninth inning. In it he gave up a solo home run to Russell Martin for the Dodgers' seventh and final run of the game -- one they'd win by a final score of 7-2
