Hey! One of the All-Stars Among Us is a Mets fan!

Joe has constantly proven that while Jack Buck is in the Hall of Fame, the only way Joe will make it would be if he buys a ticket.

This probably doesn't belong here, and I hope they don't do it every year. But to get all five presidents on board is pretty impressive.

I don't really care about the White Sox but I respect Obama more for being a true fan of his team and representing.

I think it's cool Obama wore a Sox jacket instead of a generic All-Star jacket.

I heard that Obama is going to be in the booth for a while. I'm OK with that. because if Obama is talking, Tim McCarver isn't.

Said to the (Hawaiin-born) Prez that Victorino was the 1st position player from Hawaii although there had been 3 pitchers. Not sure if he said Hawaiin-born All-Star or merely implied it. Answer = Darling, Charlie Hough, & Sid Fernandez
|
metsguyinmichigan Jul 14 2009 08:29 PM |
I forgot about Darling -- shame on me -- but I had no idea Charlie Hough was Hawaiian.

We also never got to see Musial except in an extremely long-shot. Now maybe that was intentional since the man (or The Man) is 88 and hasn't been in good health in recent years -- but from what we saw on TV it could have been some actor in a red sportcoat pretending to be Musial and no one would have known the difference.

Edmonds begins the fake stagger three strides from the ball, then goes into the splayed layout, concluding Act I with the full face plant into the fence. Is it me, or is FOX overdosing on the Obama thing? It's not like the president doesn't throw out the first pitch at games from time-to-time. It's been a part of almost every interview.
|
Edgy DC Jul 14 2009 09:37 PM |
It's not like FOX has a history of a pro-Obama agenda.
|
G-Fafif Jul 14 2009 11:04 PM |

For someone who loves the presidency as much as he loves baseball, I thought you might enjoy the saturation coverage. Loved the White Sox jacket. Not the Cardinals, not an All-Star logo. Stay true to your school. Costas did one-on-one with Prez that aired on MLB Network after the game. Brilliant stuff. Learned that when in HS, Obama's HS team played basketball vs. the Reds when they came to Hawaii for Superteams competition. (Johnny Bench: nice guy, but they played to win.) I think I would have considered that the high point of my career and coasted from there. But that's what separates the politicians/overachievers from the rest of us.
|
Nymr83 Jul 14 2009 11:50 PM |

This was the first time that a President has thrown out the first pitch at an All-Star Game since '76. It was very special and he should be lauded for helping us celebrate baseball. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/07/14/AR2009071403998.html?hpid=artslot
|
Nymr83 Jul 15 2009 05:34 AM |
I didn't hear him (I didn't know he'd be in the booth ahead of time and didn't care about the all-star game enough to torture myself with Joe Buck) but if he talked baseball I'd be curious hear the replay (I'm sure MLB network has nothing better to do than show the all-star game 14 times in the next 7 days)
|
metirish Jul 15 2009 06:36 AM |
One thing I liked about Obama in the booth was he came off like a bit of a piss taker , or a ball buster if that's your style.
|
Frayed Knot Jul 15 2009 06:59 AM |
I don't think FOX has an Obama obsession so much as it does a celebrity obsession (just like any other prime-time network show would) and who's a better celeb to glom onto than the President?
|
Edgy DC Jul 15 2009 07:08 AM |

More scoring in the All-Star Game probably means less presidential soft rain. Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison would have gotten big play last night considering the paucity of offense.
