Let's Go SHaMs

Second
Half
Mets

So look, we can consider the All-Star Break the halfway point or the 81-game mark but either way we have a second half to gear up for.

The Mets were 39-42.
The SHaMs so far are 1-1.

My important new edict for the SHaMs is to play Jeremy Reed everyday in CF till Beltran comes back, at least against RH pitchers. OTOH, I think the SHaMs need a better everyday SS than Cora, at least until Reyes returns, and I wouldn't be averse even to them recalling Wilson Valdez, with the idea that if we're gonna get lousy hitting anyway, let's be strong up the middle defensively.

The SHaM starting pitching could be decent now that they won't have Redding to foul things up and Perez is healthy.

I'm psyched.

How will the SHaMs perform over 81 games?
Who would you like them to play?

Here's the cheer when they actually win a game:

"SHaM-WOW!"

Hopefully, if nothing else, they can do something entertainingly crazy without comprimising the future.

Crazy things the SHaMs could do:

Omar Vizquel

Purchase Tony Blanco from the Chunichi Dragons

Make Bobby Parnell the starter he was born to be

Acquire a lame duck third baseman and shift Wright to short.

Batting coach? Henry Aaron.

Buy out Bobby or lure Davey out of retirement.

excellent

I like the idea of having better gloves out there , when Pagan gets back that he will help in that regard too.

Ooh... let's start with a defensive outfield.

Pagan in center, Reed in left, Church in right? Defensive whiz kid Murph starts at first. I like Wright at short-- if you do that, though, howzabout Murph at third and Evans at first?

Sheffield and Tatis serve as situational lefty-mashers/twice-a-week starters. Cora's in at short and Wright moves to third for the late innings.

Short bench. Lots of pitchers. And if you're going to bunt-- and you couldn't blackmail Manuel into stopping-- let's bunt all the f-ing time. Slap bunts. Squeezes. Bal'mer chops. Funt, funt, funt, funt! Old-time McGraw-style, cleats-up baseball! Slap-chop to go with Sham-Wow! I can't stop using exclamation points!

(Oh, and we'll probably have to be a little dirtier for this to work-- leaning into pitches, running outside of baselines to get in throwing lanes, and the like. But hey, apparently, we're baseball's bad guys without even knowing it. If we're going to be punchless, might as well out-Victorino the Victorinos of the league.)

Until Delgado gets back. Then it's hammer time.

And if we are going to go with "Sham-WOW" as the cheer, then we've got to lobby the team to hire Craig Lefferts as pitching coach-- he's made in Germany.

Any reason to think that Reed is Pagan's lesser --- even assuming a healthy Pagan?

I don't get your sarcasm towards me in this, Pagan can help this team when he gets back and it's not like he would take the place of a slugger when he does play.

I don't know either way if Reed is better or worse than Pagan , I've barely seen Reed play.

I like it. We become the reincarnate 1890's Baltimore Orioles.

Hopefully we don't get pounded in the standings the way that the hooker pounded the Shamwow guy. (What a douche! I wish I was him!)

Pagan's obviously better at getting off-days.

Apart from that, a slightly better walk rate. But, yeah, they're pretty similar, skill-set-wise.

And I was more half-joking, Irish-- sorry if it came off sarcastically. I actually really like the idea of doing something completely different and fun-- as long as the front office uses the remainder of the season to try and prep for 2010, I'd actually love to see some dice-rolling. Given the power-free offense, fast, fleet outfield defense would actually be preferable to starting Tatis or Sheff "for power", especially considering that Johan, Livan, Perez and Maine are all flyball pitchers.

I meant merely as centerfielders.
