OK, Who Bought It?

Fess up.

But the real question is "Who sold it?"

I guess the Wilpons are really hurting as a result of the Madoff mess. Who else might have owned it?

A shonda.

The Doubleday family or Doubleday, Inc.

Still, it would really look good on display at CitiField. It should be there. I hope whoever bought it will give it back to the club.

There probably is one on display there, or will be. It's not like the club gets one unique trophy.

I honestly think those are some pretty ugly trophies.

i'm shocked a) that it was sold and b) that it was only 23k in light of some of the prices they got for junk from Shea.

If I'd have known it was being auctioned and known it could've been had for what it went for - I would have seriously considered it.

Not saying I would have done it, but I would have definitely thought about it.

OE: Story I saw this morning said it went for $23K. MFS' link says $32K.

I was thinking more along the lines of $23K.

And Namor makes a good point - if this was made known to Mets fans at large I'm sure they would've gotten a boatload more than they did.

I believe there is only one given each year. I had my picture taken with it in Rockerfeller Center when I gave a donation to charity during one of Imus' radiothons for SDS. (Yes, it was a trophy the Yanks had won the previous year. They loaned it for the charity drive pics.). Thought about the pic a while ago to show someone and couldn't find it.

From the description at Robert Edward

Unlike the standard-size World Series trophies, which are issued to players, coaches, and front office executives, only a very limited number of owner's trophies are produced each year. Normally the team owner or owners get one and another is ordered for display in the team's office. According to our consignor, this is one of only three New York Mets owner's trophies ordered by the club to commemorate its 1986 World Championship.

Immediately thought of George Costanza as "Naked Body Suit Man," dragging one of these around the parking lot at YSII while trying to get fired on Seinfeld.

Same here. Also, started wondering about the Shea auction pricing... and yes, you could have bought the entire "AIG" wall segment, so as to make some Endy (or, more likely, Steve Finley) moments at your backyard BBQ. (Or about a bullpen-and-a-half. Or three gates' worth of turnstiles. A refresher: http://www.loge13.com/pricelist.php)

Thanks, Edgy.
More on the apparently low winning bid.

When the major auction houses have items like this (usually over $10,000 starting bid), they put them in a catalog/ announcement and send it to the group of people who are interested in things like it. They have special mailing lists for categories such as stamps, coins, art, artifacts, etc. They might even have one for sport-related items.

Maybe they didn't have a list for Mets fans. :)

So this is smaller than the real one?

I think, for your purposes and mine, it is the "real one" --- except that there is no one. There are multiples ones --- at least three for the owners in this case and smaller ones for the uniform personnel.
