These young fellows will be celebrating their 25 year reunion this year ... if they can survive the music teacher...

Yes, that's Salami.

This is a must game if we who seek the impossible are to sustain even the slightest fantasy of the absurd given that the Rockies will come to UnShea for four games at least tied for the Wild Card lead, granting us our only and probably last chance in hell of directly making up ground on somebody who matters.

It's not worth unraveling the numbers from here to Thursday, but the Mets, by winning Sunday, can take on the Rox no worse than 7-1/2 out of the WC lead. Should the Giants win and we win, we're 6-1/2 back of both of them. Many bodies to climb over, but before one step can be taken, a toehold must be gained.

Sure we have no legitimate shot, but until it's official, it's not.

The Mets have SEVEN teams ahead of them in the Wildcard and are at least 3.5 behind each of them (7.5 out of 1st)
On the division its 10.5 behind the Phillies and 4 each behind the Braves/Marlins
But the Mets have EIGHT more series against those 3 division teams, so I'd consider that lead more surmountable than the wildcard.

The magic is back... in the lineup 'cept Schneid replaces Santos.

Pagan, cf
Castillo, 2b
Wright, 3b
Murphy, 1b
Francoeur, rf
Sullivan, lf
Schneider, c
Cora, ss
Hernandez, rhp

Daniel Murphy: The futechuh of cleanup hitters.

Brandon Knight was released from Buffalo so he can pitch in Korea.

Just checked in. After a single, 3 doubles, and another single, I think I'll check out again.

Hell, even if Rickey isn't yet Rickeying, I'll be watching MLB-- as this team continues to remind one, there are more stultifying things than Jim Rice speaking.

My reality-coping mechanism doesn't include a Catch the Phillies component.

Right now I'd be happy to pass the Astros in the course of the next seven innings.

Offensive resilience? AND Rickey giving a speech? ("Muhammad Ali once said, 'I am the greatest'... unquote.")

CSB cracks open a Sam Adams in a baby bottle, kicks back and enjoys the day.

Even weirder, Moehler and Livan are having pretty much the same season, statistically-- from ERA to WHIP to K/9 to wins-and-losses to run support.

Also, TWO triples today? In a non-Citi environ? If someone brings a ouija board in, I'm leaving.

mlb.tv properly touts the HD quality of the video. The problem is that it's 2 to 3 minutes behind real time so when I read "Stand Up Triples...." I knew what was coming. I've since switched to the standard video quality.

Was ready to throw Livan to the wolves after inning 1 (and still wouldn't mind finding a replacement) but it would be a big deal if he can continue this post-1st inning shut-down.

If there were an actual Cory hotline, I would be mulling a call.

Nice AB there from Schneider after the steal-plus-one. Would that Moehler would have given in and given him a belt-high FB.

Needs an ultra-gritty, elf-looking Gorilla who constantly hits his way into rally-killing DPs and/or grounds out on ball four.

Related: thanks, Alex!

Livan sits down Tejada for strikeout #6-- the Livan equivalent of a 1999 Kerry Wood game.

Mets go 1-2-3 in the top of the 7th... with the lead, for a change. AGAIN.

A little moxie from the Muts today. Down early, the good guys fight back and Livan (wears 61 because that's the year he was born) settles in and holds it together very well.

Nice PH by Reed.

This is a game that so far does not suck.

Let's knock 'em down and take 'em out!

I put on the Astros radiocast and the announcers said that their team had "a let down" after playing the Cardinals for 3 games and then beating Santana. "Let down" is a poor excuse

Who the hell are these guys with all the hard hit balls?

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Jul 26 2009 02:53 PM

To be fair, Julia Stiles could get fat on Houston's pitching beyond Oswalt, Rodriguez and Hawkins. That said, just because it's junk food doesn't mean it's not sassifying.

Finish it, Seanny.

When (I'm sliding right over the "if") Beltran returns, should Pagan continue to play center field?
He certainly belongs in the lineup - he gets on base, has leadoff speed, and certainly plays good defense. Moving Carlos to a corner spot wouldn't put as much pressure on his legs.
Whaddaya' think?

You know that butterfly that mimics the Monarch, so as to make people think it's poisonous, only it's not?

Pagan's that butterfly.

He's really not that good defensively-- he has all the tools, and plays as deep as Beltran, but without the quick reads on the ball, so a lot of stuff drops in. If Beltran can run at all, I'll take him over Pagan 393 times out of 393.

Now, if Martinez-- one notable cleat-catching aside-- looks as good as he did earlier in fill-in work when he comes back, maybe he starts splitting time with CB in center as CB approaches contract's end.

Frayed Knot
Jul 26 2009 03:21 PM

* If/when Beltran comes back he's playing CF.
* I do think Pagan is fine (if not better) as a fill-in CF and I'd like to see us hang onto him as outfielder #4 for next year. Now he just has to work on staying on the field
* Martinez looked better defensively than I expected based on prospect reports that universally had him tagged strictly as a corner guy.
