Wide Amplitude for Dreams: Rocky IV IGT 7/30 (Game 2)

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jul 30 2009 12:47 PM

Thread title from English transalation of anthem's lyrics.

Russia — our sacred state,
Russia — our beloved country.
A mighty will, a great glory —
Your possession for all future ages!

Glory to you, our free Fatherland,
Age-old union of fraternal peoples,
Ancestor-given wisdom of the people!
Glory to you, our country! We are proud of you!

From the southern seas to the polar regions
Spread our forests and fields.
You are unique in the world! You alone are like this —
Our dear land kept safe by God!

Wide amplitude for dreams and for living
Gets opened up for us with each passing year.
Loyalty to the Fatherland gives us strength.
Thus it was, is, and always shall be!

The commentary of the videomaker is priceless:

]Communism is an unbeatable force, and produced the greatest fictional boxer who ever lived. Ivan Drago.

]Jules, y'know, honey... this isn't real. You know what it is? It's St. Elmo's Fire. Electric flashes of light that appear in dark skies out of nowhere. Sailors would guide entire journeys by it, but the joke was on them... there was no fire. There wasn't even a St. Elmo. They made it up. They made it up because they thought they needed it to keep them going when times got tough, just like you're making up all of this. We're all going through this. It's our time at the edge.

Will not click.

DeLaRosa is Ollie-like. A lefty that can give you low-hit starts, but mar it with a lot of walks. Let's hope our new righty-happy lineup can make it hurt.

In the Ford commercials, a guy enters the screen and says "people say 'hey Mike' ...." are we supposed to know who Mike is?

Finally got a new computer today. Since my laptop simply stopped working on Monday, I've been using my old laptop with a smashed screen hooked up to my TV. Cost of repair was nearly as much as cost of a new one, so I got a new one.

I know, right? At least get in the homopugilistic spirit of the theme and post a video of him working out his torso in Youngblood.

Better by far would be to just post a video of Joel Youngblood.

Jul 30 2009 09:24 PM

Giving potential runs away in the 1st inning = not good

Then in the 8th, Castillo, Wright & Francoeur all hit consecutive liners but we had only one single to show out of it.

That and one bad inning from Neise.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Jul 30 2009 10:22 PM

Watched with friends in a pub setting. Bats just ran out of wood. It happens. Especially with this team, it happens.

On the plus side-- hey! Two solid starts from Niese, really, against teams that should whap the crap out of him. And Parnell looked good (take note, Clevelanders!) and nasty. I'm encouraged.

And I don't care how you slice it, remix it, or slap a cutesy "Shamwow" ad tag on it-- absolutely nothing good has been or will ever be inspired by "St. Elmo's Fire." NO ONE DENIES THIS.

Edgy DC
Jul 31 2009 05:43 AM

If anything, it's anti-inspirational.

"I was thinking of switching to tenor sax."

"Yeah? Like Rob Lowe as Billy Hixx in St. Elmo's Fire?"

"You know, I think I'll stick with coronet."
_____

"One thing I could do with all this hair is put it up in a big old top knot. There's a thought."

"Like I Demi Moore in St. Elmo's Fire?"

"Yeah, I think I'll just cut it all off."
______

"So, dude, I got into Georgetown."

"Dude, you could hang out at all the places the gang in St. Elmo's Fire haunted."

"Where's that Bucknell brochure?"
Anything good you can say about the decade of the eighties can always be rebutted with, "Yeah, but St. Elmo's Fire."

]I apologize for my younger self getting in the way of the Mets' continued winning ways. I forgot that Angel Pagan takes the theme from "St. Elmo's Fire" very literally, and when he was reminded that he had to be "a man in motion," well, he couldn't help himself, thus the attempted steal of home.

Much as I put my role as saxophonist Billy Hicks behind me and went on to much greater acting glory as Deputy White House Communications Director Sam Seaborn, I'm hoping the Mets will Wing their way to victory against West division foe Arizona.

As for Friday's game, if the Diamondbacks come after Livan, we're gonna bust them like a piñata.

God bless the United States of America.
