Uniwatch linked to this blog. Apparently a Phillies fan can't stand it when people customize jerseys with their own names instead of one of a player. He calls them out in his blog, devoted entirely to the subject.

Nice to see Phillies fans beating up on each other.

Now, a blog showing all the goofballs who put names on the backs of Yankees jerseys even though the team famously doesn't have names on the backs of the jerseys, that would be funny.

I thought of that this past weekend, saw some old fool at the mall wearing a "Mantle 7" customized t-shirt jersey. Yes, it had Mantle's name printed on the back.

Dumb.

Not so much when they kill each other.

I don't get it. Personalizing a jersey is better than getting some douche jock's name that will make it useless in a matter of years, isn't it?

At least the t-shirts are cheap. How about the YLDBs who do that to an authentic jersey, costing more than $100?

IMO it depends. A jersey that historically has never had a NOB, or specifically that particular era (i.e. a 1969 style Met uniform) I think should be left untouched.

If it is a famous number in that team's history, i.e. 41, I do have a problem as quite frankly I would be offended if I saw a Met jersey with 41Whomever on it. That's Seaver's number, it should be held in high regard by all Met fans.

It wouldn't bother me so much if it was a number that has been a literal hot potatoe (even 17) through the years, and if the guy (like certain forum members and friends of the CPF) says it is his (or her) fantasy camp jersey, okay, I'll give them that.

As to the useless in a few years thing? Doesn't bother me. Nice coversation piece, or a chance to relive fond memories (or grin and bear the embarrassment of say Alomar12).

As a Met fan, a little bit. 41, 14 and 37, first off should never have NOBs, and second even if they did they should only be Seaver, Hodges and Stengel respectively.

Every Seaver uni-tee I've ever seen has a name on it. That's just an odd choice to me (as is the outline font).

Also, I have to confess to a mild irritation of the sensibilities, own-name-customized-jersey-wise. It doesn't really bother me, per se, so much as it drops the wearer a level, taste-wise, in the esteem of the style-fascist portion of my brain.

Tom had a NOB when he was with the team in 1983, and that would be a sweet retro jersey to have!

I don't care if someone put their own name on a jersey, but I thought it was funny that a Phillies fan was so uptight about it that he created a whole blog to call out his own brethren on it.

I do think it's lame when Yankee fans put names -- theirs or some player -- on jerseys that aren't supposed to have names on them.
