Adopted: Cam Maron

I can't let the kid from Hicksville go by, not after his Mets-lovin' pedigree was revealed. He may be only a 34th-round pick, but you know any player who wanted to be the PA announcer at Shea Stadium is going to try his best to make it to Citi Field.

Six games since signing, scattered over July and August. Batting .300. Learning his craft as a catcher, particularly his footwork. No word on whether he's painted his room in St. Lucie blue and orange.

It must have pained him to have been a Long Island Astro, but considering he was born more than four years after Jesse Orosco struck out Kevin Bass, maybe he took it in stride.

In twelve games for our catcher friend from Long Island, a propitious 41 at-bats for the GCL Mets, a .293 average, a .408 OBP and his very first HR in the last game he played, August 29.

Born the same day the Giants upset the 49ers to earn a trip to Super Bowl XXV.

Re: Adopted: Cam Maron

Cam Maron tells Mets fans, through Mack's Mets, to keep the faith.

Mets catcher Cam Maron and I talked briefly last week.

Cam was a 34th round draft pick in 2009 out of Hicksville High School, in Long Island. He didn’t get to play much in 2009 (41 at bats for the GCL Mets), but he showed he was worth the pick: .293/.408/.415/.823. Trust me; the Mets love catchers with an .823 OPS.

The GCL Mets actually had four decent catchers in 2009 (Maron, Nefli Zapata, Amauris Valdez, and Juan Torres) so it’s hard to guess where Maron will wind up in the spring. Hopefully, it is somewhere he can be a starter.

Mack: So, what are you doing in the off-season? Winter assignment? Instruction League? Rehab? Or just good old fashioned rest and relaxation?

Cam: Mack, how's it going? Best of luck with the website and the blogs. After the season I went home and worked out in preparation for Instructional League, which was from Oct 26-Nov 20. After that, I'll be back at it, working out daily, and preparing for the 2010 season.

Mack: What was your analysis of your 2009 season?

Cam: 2009 was a tough year for the organization as a whole, up and down the entire ladder, from the Majors down to Rookie ball. A lot of injuries occurred throughout and it was very hard to overcome them. Personally, being in Rookie ball this season taught me a lot of small things, and hopefully I can move forward next year.

Mack: What are your hopes and desires for the 2010 season? Working on anything new to pump up the volume?

Cam: For 2010, my goal is to be in Kingsport at the minimum. Working on defensive skills and my mental game, especially with the coordinators in Instructs. Take those drills and skills home for the off-season and come back ready to compete for a starting position in Spring Training.

Mack: Lastly, anything you want to share with your fans out therin Met-land?

Cam: Met Fans, I grew up on Long Island, being a Met fan since the day I was born. I been through the ups of the 1999, 2000, and 2006 playoffs, and the downs of the 2001-2004, 2007-2008 seasons. Keep pulling for us, don't ever lose faith. We're working extremely hard in the minors to be prepared for the Major Leagues when our names are called. GO METS!! Thanks for your time Mack.

I'd imagine it's almost as bad as watching the Yankees beat the Mets in the World Series as a 10 year-old and having to go in the next day and catch shit from your snot-nosed bandwagon-riding classmates who wouldn't know which end of the bat to hold, and then to dealing with another bullshit school-wide Yankee Day later in the week.

The kid from Long Island has broken out of his torpor in a big way, with a walk in his only plate appearance on July 16 after not getting on in his two previous games. The on-base percentage is still robust: .421 after a half-dozen games.

Hicksville’s Camden Maron Finishes Second Season With Mets Affiliate

Friday, 05 November 2010 00:00

Camden Maron, a 2009 Hicksville High School graduate and New York Mets’ 34th round draft selection in the 2009 Amateur Player Draft, completed his second summer season with the Mets Gulf Coast League minor league team in Port St. Lucie, Florida.

He finished the season with an impressive .313 batting average. He’s been back on Long Island since early September where he has been concentrating on strength and conditioning as well as mentoring younger players at The Performance Factory in Farmingdale.

He was especially proud to share his talents with the Hicksville Hurricane team. Maron left on Sunday, Oct. 24 for the Dominican Republic where he will be participating as a Met in a month long fall league. After that he’ll return home for the holidays and prepare to leave in February for spring training back in Port St. Lucie.

In addition to batting left-handed, Maron’s game is similar to that of current Mets catcher Josh Thole. Both are contact hitters who rarely strikeout and exhibit strong defensive skills.

Re: Adopted: Cam Maron

Maron goes under Toby Hyde's microscope, comes out ranked the Mets' No. 39 prospect -- in the Top 40, at any rate.

Maron is like Josh Thole Jr. Like Thole in the minors, Maron’s been darn consistent about it. Maron has a short contact-oriented swing to go along with his strong plate eye. He’ll never hit for much power, and even during batting practice does not look to drive the ball much.

Still, he’s a catcher and a chance for plus OBP from the position is really nice.

Maron moves well behind the plate, and believes that his blocking is the strongest part of his defensive game, while he still needs to continue to improve his throwing.

Also, he gets bonus points for growing up a Mets fan.

Re: Adopted: Cam Maron

The next Mike Piazza! He'd like to be, at any rate. From Adam Rubin:

Cam Maron grew up in Hicksville on Long Island, rooting for the Mets and naturally having a particular affinity for Mike Piazza.

“Mets -- the whole way,” Maron said. “Piazza was my guy. I used to love watching him. I liked watching Jose [Reyes], too, when I was younger. When he was coming up, he was always exciting. David [Wright] came up around the same time as well. I remember ’99 and 2000 a lot. It was something they hadn’t done in a while, and it was exciting to watch.”

Now, the 21-year-old Maron is on a path toward becoming a major league catcher in Flushing, too.

Maron, a 34th-round pick in 2009 out of Hicksville High School, is hitting .305 with four homers, 38 RBIs and a .393 on-base percentage in 80 games with low-A Savannah. His batting average cracks the top 10 in the South Atlantic League.

Given the lack of catching prospects in the organization, the lefty-hitting Maron has a solid opportunity to rise through the minor league ranks. The other top catching prospects are 2012 supplemental first-round pick Kevin Plawecki out of Purdue, 2010 third-round pick Blake Forsythe from Tennessee, and 17-year-old switch-hitter Jose Garcia out of Venezuela.

Maron was named the Mets’ Sterling Award recipient as the top performer with Kingsport last season, which earned him a visit to Citi Field for a pregame ceremony.

He has been a lifelong catcher.

“I caught from a young age. Since I was eight I’ve been catching,” Maron said. “It all started, I guess, when I was bored doing the outfield or whatever we were doing back in Little League. I guess I wanted to be involved in a lot more action. My dad decided to throw me back there one day, and the rest is history. I’ve loved it ever since. You’re involved in every play. You’re touching the ball every time it’s in play.

“I take a lot of pride in my mental ability behind the plate -- knowing hitters, knowing situations, pitch calling and things like that,” he continued. “Having a good memory of those things really helps. It’s something that not a lot of people can see physically. Only people who are attentive to the game or on the inside are the ones that can see it, which is sometimes tough. I really take a lot of pride in that. It really helps out the pitchers, and they appreciate that.”

“The best advice I can give to any player looking to make it to the next level is always work hard,” Maron said. “If you work hard and put yourself in the right environment, with the right trainers and specialists, and the right teammates, you can make it anywhere. Spending part of the year in the North East, especially the offseason, requires a lot self-motivation and a good work ethic. There are a lot of obstacles that are present in the northeast that are not present in other parts of the country. Do not let anyone tell you that you can’t make it because of where you come from. Re: Adopted: Cam Maron

Newsday takes note of Strong Island boy making...I was gonna say good, but more like making progress.

By Gregg Sarra

Hicksville's Cam Maron calls it the grind -- the exhausting trip through the minors on the path to The Show. But the Mets' catching prospect is right where he wants to be.

"There is a plan for everyone in our organization," said Maron, in his fourth season with the Mets' organization. "You have to be focused on the job and know where it's going to take you. I have been fortunate to be in a system that rewards work ethic and achievement with advancement."

Some might say that Travis d'Arnaud, the Mets' Triple-A prize catching prospect, might be a huge stumbling block to Maron's road to the majors.

But things can change quickly. D'Arnaud is on the disabled list with a fractured left foot. The Mets moved Dave Centeno from Double-A Binghamton to replace him at Las Vegas, creating a domino effect of movement throughout the system.

"You never know," Maron said. "So you have to be prepared."

Maron, currently at the Mets' Class A affiliate in Port St. Lucie, Fla., opened the season with two game-winning hits against the Marlins' Jupiter Hammerheads but fell off and entering Saturday was hitting .221 with a .241 on-base percentage. "The season is a long journey of ups and downs," said Maron, 22. "You have to be able to balance the highs and lows to be successful. I'm very pleased with my progress with the Mets."

Maron was honored with the organization's Sterling Award in 2011 as MVP of the Kingsport Mets.

"It was an incredible feeling to be recognized by the organization," Maron said. "Every year you learn a little bit more and the experience is immeasurable. I'm moving up quickly in the system."

Maron's offseason training regimen and preparedness have helped him accomplish that. The lefthanded hitter batted .300 for Class A Savannah in the South Atlantic League last year.

"We started training in his sophomore year of high school and he's the complete package," said hitting instructor Joe Francisco of Performance Factory in Farmingdale, who played in the Atlanta Braves farm system. "He has the big league makeup. He has the head and the work ethic and the intangibles that don't show up on a radar gun or a stopwatch. I think Mets scout Larry Izzo got a steal here."

Maron has developed into a trusted catcher at Port St. Lucie, where the Mets will play a 140-game season.

He said Mets catching coordinator Bob Natal has worked with him on his defensive skill set. "It's been easier to call games," Maron said.

Maron, a two-time minor-league all-star, has thrown out 21 percent of would-be base-stealers in his minor-league career. Entering Saturday, he had thrown out five runners this season.

"I'm getting five starts a week, so I'll play around 110 games this season,'' he said. "I've developed an excellent relationship with the pitching staff."

Re: Adopted: Cam Maron

Cam Maron, with fringe on top.

Maron has some real talent, and as a lefty-hitting catcher in the Mets farm system, he has some serious potential to advance. His bat has never been known as his strong suit, as it lacks some of the power that is expected out of most catchers, but his eye at the plate is what intrigues most scouts. He is an extremely smart batter, and that intelligence shows in his 11.7 BB%, and while his power may not be there just yet, he is still too young to factor out the possibility that he can work some pop into his swing. Maron is also known as having a strong athletic base and good fundamentals; only helping to develop his defensive abilities. The essentials are all there for Maron, he just needs to prove that he can adjust to the increasing pitcher abilities as he moves up the ranks. If he continues to work on his bat, there’s no reason why Maron won’t continue to work his way up the minor-league ladder.

2014 is the year for Maron to show that he has, once again, improved his skills and is able to adjust to improved pitching. He has moved quickly through the ranks up until this point showing flashes of greatness along the way, however, he had some trouble with his bat in 2013. I suspect that he will, at the least, start in St. Lucie again this year. However, his many other advanced abilities lead me to believe that if he can bring his average up a bit and add some more power to his swing, the Mets will have no problem promoting him once again before the years end.

Re: Adopted: Cam Maron

This isn't a case of Sherman Lollar or Gus Triandos not making the majors because Yogi Berra was blocking them.
So far, the only thing blocking Maron's progress is Maron.

Maron fiancee Jenn Austin was slated to sing (and presumably sang) the national anthem at Tradition Field yesterday. St. Lucie's most talented couple this summer!

Re: Adopted: Cam Maron

The Binghamton media's got the Nimmo Fever.

Nimmo earned Florida State League midseason All-Star honors while with St. Lucie before his promotion to Binghamton. Combined between the two levels, Nimmo this season has scored 97 runs, driven in 51 runs, hit 21 doubles, nine triples, 10 home runs and logged an on-base percentage of .396 to go along with a .429 slugging percentage.

"We're very pleased with where Brandon is right now," DePodesta said in an email. "Since this is just his age 21 season, we're very happy that he has spent the second half of the season in AA and is already making the adjustments to succeed at that level. For a guy who didn't play with the amateur competition in somewhere like Florida or Southern California, he has been very quick to make adjustments at each and every level."

Big things ahead

Nimmo has just begun to tap into his power potential with added muscle this season on his 6-foot-3 frame. He has as many home runs this season as his previous seasons combined.

B-Met manager Pedro Lopez has put Nimmo in the leadoff spot 41 times in 61 games, but he believes his future will include batting near the middle of the lineup.

"I'm almost positive that's going to be his role whenever he gets to the big leagues," Lopez said. "... He's got some pop. He drive the ball to all fields."

Now that he's no longer chasing big brother, Nimmo has has found other driving forces.

"Now I'm chasing my personal dream of being a major-league baseball player," Nimmo said. "Once I got drafted it's all about leaving no regrets that I gave it everything that I had. I like to think that I'm not only making a name for myself, and I'm trying to uphold a reputation of my family — obviously I want the Nimmo name to be a well-known name and I want to honor my parents and my brother — but also just the fact that people hear Wyoming and they chuckle."

Nimmo bristles at the idea that baseball does not count or is not played at the same level in Wyoming as in other parts of the country.

"In Cheyenne, baseball continues to get bigger and bigger and kids dreams continue to get bigger and bigger," Lain said. "People follow him and not just in our program. People across the state follow Brandon."

Mets fans all over the Northeast also follow Nimmo. On the road or at home, he does interviews and he stops to takes pictures and talk with folks who are eagerly awaiting his arrival in New York. Their expectations never seem to overwhelm him. He greets them all with a smile.

Then again, it shouldn't be surprising considering Nimmo embraced his brother's mantle as the guy paving the way for an entire region of baseball players.

"If anybody out there that's from where I am back in Wyoming — and I know that South Dakota is similar to that and North Dakota — if they have a dream that they want to be a professional baseball player, a major-league baseball player," Nimmo says, "I want to be one of those guys that broke through the barriers and said, 'If you work hard enough. If you make the sacrifices and have no regrets about what you do. You work as hard as you can, then dreams can come true.' "

And that, unless the transactional fates have other ideas, puts a wrap on prospective Met Cam Maron. Selected by the usually catcher-heavy Reds in the minor league draft today. New marriage, new team. Tweeted a couple of gracious thank yous to the Mets organization and fans.

Good luck, Hicksville-raised Mets fan.

Had a good year in helping the Double-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp to the playoffs. But still nowhere near the majors eight years after the Mets drafted him.
