IGT, 8/2/2009, Diamondbacks at Mets

I find this game to be larger than others.

Jon Garland (5-10, 4.42) v. Pelfrey (8-6)

Garland has put together a few good starts lately. Pelfrey has put together a few OK ones. With Haren vs. TBA tomorrow, there's a lot on Big Mike's shoulders. In fact, it seems a lot of these crossroads starts have been falling on those shoulders recently.

Let's go, Mets.

Sadly, the rain is larger today..little or no chance this will be played

Any actual word on this game? are we looking at a late-afternoon start? a day-nighter tommorow?

Rain has been coming through here the last 24 hours --- violent but relenting. Rainbows follow.

Aiming for 3:35 first pitch

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Aug 02 2009 01:50 PM

Pelfrey apparently spent the delay sharpening his sink-- he strikes out the side in the first.

Edgy DC
Aug 02 2009 02:03 PM

Sharpened more than that --- hitting two batsmen in a row and plugging his catcher in the nuts to boot.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Aug 02 2009 02:05 PM

But hey-- no hitter so far!

(Nice sig.)

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Aug 02 2009 02:11 PM

2nd-baseman/prison bitch* Ryan Roberts makes a nice barehanded grab-and-toss to rob Muffy of an infield hit. Then Garland hits Frenchy in the ribs. The ball wasn't slippy for Roberts, dude.

Scoreless through two.

*That's what the neck tat means, right?

Gave up about an hour into the rain delay. It was pretty ugly out there (but looks much better now).

An hour is about how long I'd last these days.

(unless I had a group to hang out with at The Pines like one CPF meeting
last year)

Gee I wonder if Ryan Roberts is a douche in real life.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Aug 02 2009 02:43 PM

It's a shame when 0-2 becomes a hit/walk, but Romero hit a decent 3-2 pitch (low and middle-away) for the RBI double.

Pelf gets Garland to close the door at one run... but REALLY not sure about walking Ojeda to clear the pitcher.

All that striking out is proving labor-intensive-- Pelf's at 81 pitches through four.

Gwreck
Aug 02 2009 02:48 PM

Seems to me that Augie had several big hits against us in '07 or '08 but I agree about the strategy. 81 pitches in 4 innings is really not very good from Pelfrey, results (only 1 run) notwithstanding.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Aug 02 2009 02:59 PM

THAT was no K.

Gwreck
Aug 02 2009 03:04 PM

107 pitches to get through 3 good innings and two crappy ones. Somehow I am left wanting more from our "#2" starter.

Plate discipline! He takes 4 pitches before the KABOOM. Nice, Jeff.

Aug 02 2009 03:18 PM

We have a Pat Misch sighting!

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Aug 02 2009 03:20 PM

Double-switched in, sorta.

Let's see. Sheff's a bit tender in the leg to start, yet, so let's just PH him... and leave him in to play LF on wet turf.

Gwreck
Aug 02 2009 03:28 PM

So...according to gameday, that play was scored 7-5-4, runner out at home. What happened?

Edgy DC
Aug 02 2009 03:29 PM

Single to left, throw to the plate cut off by the thirdbaseman, who nailed the batter-runner at second.

Gwreck
Aug 02 2009 03:30 PM

Ok, thanks. Clearly just a gameday screwup.

Edgy DC
Aug 02 2009 03:39 PM

I don't like the way the Mets have the thirdbaseman do infield cutoffs on the left side. He's got better things to do.

Gwreck
Aug 02 2009 03:44 PM

Guess this confirms Figueroa for tomorrow's start. I guess Misch goes but I wouldn't be sad if it it was Redding instead.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Aug 02 2009 03:47 PM

Through six-and-a-half. Perhaps seventh-inning stretching will help with the bat-swinging and such. Tomorrow's a tough one-- let's pick it up.

LET'S

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

Valadius
Aug 02 2009 03:55 PM

I see Pat Misch finally worked his way into a game.

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Aug 02 2009 04:03 PM

So, that decision to take out Pagan and leave hobbly Sheff in left has cost roughly 1.5 runs. (Will estimate that it's about 50-50 Sullivan, if he's playing LF, gets to the single two innings ago fast enough to get or hold the runner at third.)

Valadius
Aug 02 2009 04:30 PM

Okay, I have to say it - what kind of a name is Fieldin Culbreth?

Apparently, MLB had to reach down to AAA Hobbiton for a vacation-cover ump.

Gwreck
Aug 02 2009 04:44 PM

He's a regular umpire and has been for years. He worked the World Series last year.

Fman99
Aug 02 2009 06:03 PM

Bleh, the bats went to sleep and didn't wake up again. Again.

Seven point five out in the WC, with many many teams in front. Don't think it's going to happen.
