If Castillo's gone, how about taking a look at what Murphy can do at second? I'd rather see just about any firstbaseman in baseball on this team right now than Argenis Reyes, and he's the only available middle infielder on the 40.

Maybe recall the Stick instead.

Tejada. He might find himself way over his head but he's the only guy who can bring some hope with him.

I swear, the inability to figure out what's wrong with Reyes and how long it might take to fix him has absolutely torpedoed this season. That and a buncha other things, but that.

They will never go to Muffy at 2B.

There's something in your eyes that says maybe, but yeah, Jerry seemed to not even know that Murphy had ever played the infield.

Tejada? He's kinda hot for a guy on a cold-hitting team., though he looks about 15.

Why not? I believe he projects as an SS.

Yes. Which is odd, since really, he's a Dominican 19. Which, of course, means he's renting the car next road trip.

he might be 15 if Bernazard forged his papers

The Dominicans lie about their age thing is pretty played out. I doubt they're particularly more guilty than other foreigners signed in their teens.

Most relevantly, Tejada is Panamanian. He'd be only the third Panamanian to play for the team and the first non-pitcher.

Bruce Chen.

Can't remember the other 2.

Edgy DC
Aug 04 2009 09:54 PM

Well, he would be only the third. Chen was the second. For the first, you'd have to go all the way back to the 100-mile-per-hour heat of Juan Berenguer.

Kidding. Hackily kidding, but kidding.

I think the Stick-- or even Davis-- might be a better bet than Tejada; methinks you don't bring up a kid unless he's a dominant kid. Tejada, no matter how you spin it, isn't dominating at the AA level yet.

The funny thing is I'm reading a minor league memoir written by a Yalie in the Angels system, and the US-born minor leaguers (I don't know if this is true in every system) pretty much gave up drawing distincitoins and refer to all Latin American minor leaguers as "Dominicans," no matter where they're from, actively shun them, except when they broadly deride them for their bourgeois taste.

I'm pretty sure that book you're reading was exposed a work of near total fiction.

Gwreck

I think it was more "enhanced" than it was completely conjured out of thin air. Like the writer had a vague idea of what he wanted to do but couldn't remember the details correctly when he was writing it five years after the events in the book took place.

It wasn't a particularly good book, regardless of the truth value.

Just in the first chapter and my baby picked it up.

He has already struck me as pretty dickish.

Andy Pants is back.

The Mets have traded minor-league infielder Greg Veloz to the Nationals for infielder Anderson Hernandez.

I'm underwhelmed.

Benjamin Grimm

Complicates Schaefer tallying, if nothing else.

Anderson did fairly well in DC, didn't he? He's probably better than Berroa.

Valadius

He is better than Berroa.

Andy Hernandy was the starting second baseman for the Nationals for most of the year.

And amassed 20 walks and 12 extra base hits.

This year is starting to look with infielders like 1998 looked with catchers.

Seriously, when it's time to experiment, try upping the offense by pulling the corner guys toward the middle of the diamond. Pagan to center works more or less, so try Murphy to second and Wright to short.

Benjamin Grimm
Aug 06 2009 10:46 AM

Would that really up the offense, though? Who would slide in at first and third?

Edgy DC
Aug 06 2009 10:58 AM

You know, somebody.

My point is simply that it's easier to find hitters at those postions, but not that we have burningly obvous candidates. But, you know, Nick Evans has a better stick than Argenis Reyes. Similarly is Mike Lamb better than Wilson Valdez.
