With Castillo out they felt they needed another guy whose hits rarely leave the infield. Don't know much about Veloz but I predict this deal won't hurt the Nats.

It was the position he played most frequently in the minors (although "natural" is probably overstating it a bit-- he was a below-average-at-best fielder by most metrics). I mean, hell, if the players are on board, why NOT go apeshit with the experimenting? I don't know that you're getting David over to SS ever, but why not move Murph to second, and bring up Davis (or Thole?) a bit earlier than planned to fill in at 1B? (And if they're not on board... well, isn't his supposed rapport with them counted among Manuel's strengths as a manager?)

Because you "can't sell that to fan base that still expects to win." I know that we don't expect that, but the nebulous "Mets fan base" expects to "win every year" or they're going to "go to the movies" instead of coming to the ballpark. I say go for it, though. Seriously. Cut anyone who's not a realistic puzzle piece for next year (Livan, Sheffield, Schneider, Tatis, Dessens, et al) and go young. Bring 'em up and let 'em fuckin' play.

if fernando tatis can get some playing time at second base, then surely daniel murphy can get some playing time at second base.

I would have moved Murphy to second and Tatis to first. Andy Hernandy, in my opinion, should merely displace Berroa.

Met fans seem to have an awful lot of confidence in Murphy's ability to play 2nd base - a position that he's played almost none of (a handful of minor league & AFL games) and those who have seen him play almost universally think he's ill-suited for.

I have quite the scarcity of confidence. I just think the SHaMmies are in a position where some longshot maneuvers are in order.

its far mor of a professional curiosity than a confidence. i'd like to see what he can do there since, if he can play passably, then it opens up a bunch of options for the team. most notably, it gives him a place to play if delgado ever comes back and isn't immediately traded away.

The team saw what Murphy could do at 2B in the ASL last winter. Presumably, they didn't like what they saw, since there hasn't been any mention of trying it again.
