When does your heart break?

Edgy DC

Though you may try to believe, we all have to admit that faith has been an uphill battle, and steadily growing steeper. So I inquire which relatively innocuous electronic statement most leads your head to tell your heart to go to bed, that the Mets aren't going to be victors this eve.

<blockquote>"Batting second, the shortstop, Alex Cora."

"The starting pitcher tonight, Livan Hernandez."

"Jerry's heading to the mound --- looks like he's going to make a change."

"The pitch count is up around a hundred."

"Looks like Jerry's going to the five-man infield alignment."

"Welcome to New York Mets baseball."

"Stop fidgeting, Keith." (implied)</blockquote>Each of these deflates the hell out of me.

When it's not Santana I have no confidence that we will win.

"The starting pitcher tonight, Livan Hernandez."

that will do it

I'm a traditional offense worrier, but the fact that we haven't been hurling well enough to win in 2 of every 5 games regardless of O is an added depression.

I think we've seen the last of John Maine, and Jerry's remarks about Pelf the other night indicate he's on his shitlist. Livan is what he is, but he seemed to show up Cora last night after that nonplay.

Angel Pagan is also in the doghouse, by the way. Jerry plans to sit him again today to punish him for that dumb play the other night.

In the fourth inning.

I'm hoping one day to hear that in the 8th.

"Batting cleanup, the first baseman, Daniel Murphy"

Knowing that some of the very few guys with major league skills are in the doghouse, however justifiably, while we trot out Sullivan and Hernandez and stuff --- depressing!

See, my problem is just the formula that, whatever inning, this kicks in the non-working formula of when and how Jerry goes to the pen.

Two things:

A) Jerry's got a doghouse? I was unaware. thought there was the main house, and then there was the shed where he used to stick Church and where he stores leftover chuckles and goatee trimmings.

B) Given the injury situation-- including the fact that the team's been playing with a 23-man roster all year-- I'd think we live in a figurative third-story walkup-- no room for a doghouse.

All of these do it for me.

As does, "That'll do it for _________ with one out in the _________, after two batters."

EDIT: Missed Edge's comment two up.

When we turn leadoff doubles into no - or maybe one - run early in a game knowing that missing that kind of opportunity is going to come back and bite us. We're basically not good enough to let those slide by without regretting it.

I can forgive Pagan for playing like he's the centerfielder on a very desperate team. Taking him aside and telling him he's not improving the situation by trying to do too much out there seems perfectly appropriate. Putting him in the doghouse does not.

This one's particularly tough, since if you're watching with other fans who don't follow the team at all/as closely, your grimaces/sighs/mutterings-- understandably, to someone who doesn't know the sick inexorability of what comes next-- come off as a little manic and potentially lunatic.

I mean, hey-- the team did score! And it's the first/second/fourth inning? You need to relax, dude.

Last night I had the game on.

My son came into the room and saw Corey Sullivan batting leadoff, he looked at me, eyes wide open, looked back to the TV, saw that it was the top of the first, crossed his arms, closed his eyes, dropped his head, shook it in a side to side motion then walked out of the room.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

Jerry will deny there being a doghouse too, though Rubin's notes column indicated he would use Cory Hotline at CF for several games at Pagan's expense because he likes the "energy" he provides.

What's most depressing to me maybe is the crushing realization that we not only had a full season from Delgadio, Beltrran and Reyes last years but excellent seasons form them to boot -- and we still screwed the pooch. This perspective makes me reiterate my forgotten campaign from last year that Omar should be whacked.

Ashie62
Aug 12 2009 10:56 AM

Omar "well, Santos has been a surprise"

and the realization that 90 losses may be in the cards but stubhub tells me I can sit in the promendade of almost any remaining game for $5.

Since I'm working from home today, I'll probably turn on the TV for the 3:40 game. If I do, it will be the first time I've seen any Mets action since July 16.

I don't think I've ever had this much apathy.

As someone who's been going through the motions, let me advise against it. USA-Mexico-- AT ALTITUDE!-- may make your heart hurt a bit less.

I'm beginning to feel the same way. Crappy, too, when I was planning to flly up on a Saturday and home on a Sunday evening to be able to catch a couple of games at CF.

This is a hard team to root for, and not just because of the losses. Injuries are a perfectly accpetable excuse for most losses but the uninspired play on the field is rubbing off on fandom.

If it looked like they were consistently hustling and busting it, and playing sound ball, and there were still tough losses, I could live with that -- I'd accept it and appreciate it. But that isn't happening. Sloppy play and a general lack of any get-up-and-go, makes this a tough team to watch.

To boot, a great number of these guys aren't even Mets. They're wearing the uniform but in many cases will only be remembered as Mets through sites like this or UMDB. This squad has no real identity or character.

Maybe that's part of it. Character is a lot easier to root for.

We need a raise.

They are bound to be dehydrated and coughing a lot. Met hitters just perform as if they're physically ill.

Actually, I think they are playing sounder ball --- far sounder in August than in July.

I just think they're fundamentally doomed with this offense, and any mistake they make is amplified by the offensive mismatches they're involved in.

I'll concede the point... but that ain't saying much.

And the last few games-- in ways both obvious (Pagan's travails, Castillo's airmailed toss, Murphy not being where he oughta for the DP last night) and subtle (every single one of those play-at-the-plate throws missing first-base-side, e.g.)-- have been kinda brutal.

Whenever the line up is posted in the daily IGT.

If the line up doesn't have Johan Santana pitching and batting ninth, then I generally hold out little hope of a Mets win.

I cancelled my MLB.TV package earlier this week saving me $40 for the rest of the season and making way for NFL Sunday Ticket.

To be honest, I only got through about 20 full Mets games this season, but had it on in the background while I did other things.

It just hasn't been any fun watching games this season. Or last season. Or the season before.

This year, the fun pretty much ended when May did.
