iPhone apps

A few iphone peeps here, I think. Which ones do you love?

Stuff I use most everyday:

-Facebook (I'm super gay)
-LA Times (OK, but way inferior to the NY Times app)
-NY Times (very good)
-BBCReader (ditto)
-FourTrack. First app I paid for ($9.99!). It's a digital multitrack recorder that uses the onboard iphone mic. It's very very cool.
-Lose It! (calorie counter. Very cool app).
-Falling Balls (just play it)
-WildWest (killer pinball app)
-Paper Toss (classic CPF time waster)
-TyroTuner (free guitar tuner)
-Arseblog (the free Arseblog reader)

Only other app I've paid for is the $.99 Texts From Last Night app. Probably didn't need to drop the buck for it, but I sometimes love that site.

Another cool app is Bargain Bin. It lets you know when an app you like has dropped in price.

Got Skype, but haven't used it once yet.

What do you guys like?

I use the phone for work, too, so there are some work-related aps here.

Groups - keeps all my contacts organized
Tip calculator - awesome, helps me figure out the tip when we eat out.
TwitterFon
Facebook
Newsaddict -- has all sorts of news sites in one ap
MLB.com -- freaking amazing. I went for the $9 version, and it's well worth it. Videos, condensed games, the whole nine yards.
USA Today
Presidents -- lots of details on all of them.
New York Times
New York 2Go -- all sorts of New York facts and information
Ballpark Envi -- lots of good info about stadia
CardShark -- my one game
iHandy Level -- because you never know when you need to straigthen something out.
Newspapers -- from across the country
Awesome Notes
Grocery IQ - keeps the grocery list
NYC Live -- this is really cool. There are cameras on a few fixed places in the city, and you get live views of what's going on. Sometimes I just need a little view of the Homeland.

Then:
Lose It
Fast Food Calculator

These I list separately so I can rave. Life-altering devices. I've lost 15 pounds in six weeks using these.

I did something similar, though old school with a notepad and pen, for the first six months or so when I was trying to lose weight in 2002. Wrote down everything I ate and tried to limit my caloric intake to 2200 per day and no more than 22-23% from fat. That plus going to the gym for 4-5 hours per week helped me get to where I am now (though I've gained a few back since then).

Good on you, man. I've tried w/ writing stuff down in the past, but was too lazy. This app has so many different foods already loaded, it's really easy for a lazy slug like me to keep up. So far.

PS - Flixter is awesome. Tried it yesterday and it led me to the subpar "500 Days with Summer". That app works way better than Fandango, though.

I thought about buying the MLB app. You can't choose the live games to watch, though, no? But you can choose the radio game?

You can tune into any radio feed , there are restrictiions on TV games in your area........what I love about it is that it has video highlights up righ away.....D Wright hits a bomb it's up two seconds later.....great for watching the highs and lows of a game after the fact.

Made with the aforementioned FourTrack app by me, using only the regular mic on the iPhone, the earbuds, and a bunch of banjos and mandolins and shit.

I tried that one out after I saw your artwork w/ Lorcan. Pretty cool.

Bump works like a champ. That's the app where you exchange phone numbers with someone the new-fashioned way.

You both get out your iPhones, fire up the "Bump" app, bump fists like complete dorks, say "yes" to accept transfer of contact info, and voila 2 and a half minutes later you've now each others contact info.

Me and a dude fiddled around with it at work. It's pretty neat, but will be surprised if I ever use that shit in real life.

One of my friends just introduced me to Shazam. It's jaw-droppingly amazing.

Here's how it works.

You hear a song. Anywhere. Radio, background of a television show. Stadium speakers...anywhere.

Hold up your phone, hit Shazam, and it listens for a moment or two, then tells you what the song it, who is singing it, gives you all the lyrics, gives a link to a youtube video if one exists and, finally, links to iTunes if you want to buy it.

In-freaking-credible.

My friend downloaded this for me while we were a a White Sox game, and song was playing between innings. Sure enough, up comes "Flashlight" by Funadelic or Parliment, I forget which, with the lyrics and everything.

Re: iPhone apps

Wow, that IS cool.

I've been getting into the Pandora radio app, also free.

Here's how it works. Pick a band. Say, the Ramones. Pandora will create an Internet "radio station" with songs by the Ramones, then groups like the Ramones. You can skip songs you don't like.

Just created a Ramones station: First song is "Sheena is a Punk Rocker," followed by Social Distortion's "Ring of Fire", then Joey Ramone's "What a Wonderful World" and "London Calling" by the Clash and back to the Ramones with "Ramona."

Only gripe with Pandora is it doesn't have push or run in the background, so you can't close the app/do other crap, or it shuts off. I end up on iTunes all the time instead.

Well , it seems like the 2009 app has not had updated video since the 4th, which is what they said right?....so yeah if I want to avail of everything the app has to offer I need to pay for the upgrade. That seems a little unfair to me, at the least a person upgrading form 2009 should pay half price.

It's only $20 to sign up for Club Mets that includes gameday audio. Good deal, even if they didn't really offer much last year in the inaugural version. (couple of 'presales', slight discount on Mets bricks, couple of discounts on teamstore (not at Citi, or maybe at Citi b ut not game days?) products)

I'm working on a story this week about colleges starting programs to teach students to design apps.

Interesting stuff from the profs and students. They expect the field to get bigger and bigger, especially when the tablet computers are mainstream. They compare apps now to Web sites in the mid-90s -- Every company or group wants one, few know what they want them to do and there are a lot of crappy ones out there.

I asked them which apps impressed them, and they said something called "Savvy Shopper" or something like that that takes a bar code, tells you the prices of the item in stores, complete with maps and all.

What. the. fuck.

So I am watching the game today, at home, and fire up the ol' iPhone -> AOL Radio app and tune in the FAN. Lo and behold, I am getting the Mets feed! It's a good 3-4 minutes behind the pace on TV but still. So I figure, bam, I'm good to go. Get on my running stuff and head outside.

Well, bam. As soon as I'm off my home WiFi and on 3G then I don't get the game anymore. I get what sounds like a replay of something from this morning, basically inane call in chatter and such. No MLB. Missed 30 minutes of the game while I was running, which pissed me off a bit (they were already up 6-1 when I left so I just missed the last run).

Odd that it was the game when I was at home and then switched off to not the game.

Definitely something they should be doing. When I graduated with a comp sci degree in 2003, I was woefully unprepared to actually get a job. (which is commonplace out of college, but still) Getting mobile app education would be amazingly helpful.

That's weird about the audio app over wireless/3G. I wonder if it's because it's not as simple to determine 'where' you are via the Wireless, so it didn't figure it out to black it out?

Relatedly, since I only have a Touch and not a Phone, I wish there were wireless networks (non-passworded ones) at Citi Field so I could listen to Howie and Wayne if I wanted.

Apparently, according to MLB's site, I could either buy just the At Bat app for $15, or for $20 get the app as well as online access (if I'm interpreting their pricing correctly). After rocking the free apps only for a few months my little brother was kind enough to get me an iTunes Gift Card for my birthday.

So today i bought my first app -- a $5 widget called "iSub" that lets me stream the 60 GB of music I have on my home server to my iPhone. It's pretty sweet, now I have access to all of my tunes from the road.

Any cheap games or apps worth recommending to me? I still have $25 in iTunes credit.
