Memories of Bill Wagner

Couldn't get righties to swing and miss at the fastball any longer, but kept pounding her in there. Seemed to do a better job against them with sliders but who listens to me.

Still vicious on lefties.

My abiding memory is the stupidity over his entrance music and the utter stupidity of Mike and the Mad Dog over it.

I'll probably remember the venom that Johnny Lunchbucket feels for Billy.

101 saves is 4th on the Mets all-time list.

Unimpressive in the 2006 postseason:

NLDS Game 1: Comes in T9 with 6-4 lead. Leadoff double, flyout, strikeout, RBI double, strikeout.

NLDS Game 2: Comes in T9 with 4-1 lead. 3 groundouts.

NLDS Game 3: Comes in B9 with 9-5 lead. K, K, 1B, Flyout.

NLCS Game 1: Comes in T9 with 2-0 lead. Lineout, groundout, walk, popout.

NLCS Game 2: Comes in T9 with game tied. So Taguchi HR; double, ground out, RBI double, RBI single, groundout , lifted from game down 9-6.

NLCS Game 6: Comes in T9 with 4-0 lead. 1B, 2B, GO, FO, 2 RBI double (Taguchi again), groundout.

This.

But on the field, I can't forget that Saturday afternoon implosion against the Yanks in 2006. 4-0 lead entering the 9th, single, walk, single, fly out, walk, walk, HBP.

Mets lost in 11, with the immortal Jorge Julio taking the loss.

I can't forget how angry I was that he was even in the game. It stunk of panic in a game the Mets had in hand.

I can't think of anything positive. When he pitched on Friday and looked so good, I was wondering where that was in '07 and '08 and how history could have been different if he was available in at least one of those two Septembers.

I really liked him, for whatever reason. One of the top three closers of his generation, giant upgrade over Looper.

He struck out the side to get the save in the CPF Dodgers game of last year. Other than that I don't have a lot good to say.

First thing that comes to mind. All you remember with the closers are the meltdowns and misses.

The next thing I thought of was him not being able to get on the field in Florida during the home stretch in 2007.

For all of that, I mostly enjoyed watching him pitch.

Game 2 of the 2006 NLCS was the first and only playoff game I've attended. So Taguchi only had 2 damned home runs in the '06 regular season. Buh.

I guess. But I just can't get excited over closers.

Preserved a Glavine gem on Ralph Kiner Night. I didn't like Glavine, I wasn't crazy about Wagner, but I sure do love Ralph Kiner.

Billy and Paulie embracing upon clinching of the Mets' first division title in 18 years, as if they were the ones who waited 18 years.

Ryan Zimmerman preventing a 9-0 start in '06, though a) you can't prove it would have happened and b) 8-1 was pretty good.

Ditto. One of the few times in my life where I could actually feel my face reddening. I got KYP Rook, the MFY 4-0 lead, and So Taguchi. I do have a few images of late summer 2006 that make me smile, though, to leaven it. Also:
]"Somebody want to tell me why the closer is being interviewed and I didn't even play," Wagner said in an expletive-laced tirade, "and why they are over there and not being interviewed? I got it; they're gone. (expletive) shocker."

He raises llamas; I've used "Billy Wagner's Llamas" as a fantasy team name in the past.

I believe the animal in the avatar directly above your post is actually an alpaca.

I'll say it again, your ability to remember such specifics is amazing. It's only after I read your posts that I remember individual instances like that.

I have a foggy memory of him mowing didn the Yankees 1 2 3 but don't ask me when.

I never had a problem with Wagner other than the 2006 NLCS. Spoke his mind and didn't give a fuck about hurting anyone's feelings. I hope he knocks Papelbon's teeth out.

i thought this was supposed to be dead in the water and then i see a "memories of" thread.

sadly the legacy of wagner to me is him not being there when the bullpen imploded down the stretch in 2008.

I don't want to come off as a hater, but my reason for "hating" Wagner was a little bit about how he burned every bridge in Philly and Houston on his way out of those towns; and left their fans heartbroken and betrayed, and how when he came to the Mets he was hailed as the kind of guy who wouldn't do that -- then did.

In the end he was crap in the 06 postseason, not a great teammate, and ultimately fragile and unreliable. We'd have done just as well signing Braden Looper for his tenure here. Now watch him go set fire to the Red Sox.
