Chicks dig the Baltimore Chop

You down with OBP? Hell of an Ichiro profile in today's NYT. Hell of a quote from the man himself toward the end:

]"Chicks who dig home runs aren’t the ones who appeal to me,” he said. “I think there’s sexiness in infield hits because they require technique. I’d rather impress the chicks with my technique than with my brute strength. Then, every now and then, just to show I can do that, too, I might flirt a little by hitting one out."

I couldn't help but think of an old Kids in the Hall bit (below), as, to the educated connoisseur of baseball sexy, he is lovely and smoldering.

Re: Chicks dig the Baltimore Chop

Ichiro is 35, I don't know how much longer he'll play, and Gold Gloves aren't all that meaningful a measure of greatness anyway, but if he kept winning them would he be the only ever to win it every year of his career?

That's nothing. We all know Derek Jeter will win them for about three years after he retires.

So can we just officially say that Ichiro is the most delightful quote of this era of baseball?

http://100percentinjuryrate.blogspot.co ... uzuki.html

]"When you talk about (golfers or race-car drivers), I don't want to see them run. It's the same if you were to meet a beautiful girl and go bowling. If she's an ugly bowler, you are going to be disappointed."
]"To tell the truth, I'm not excited to go to Cleveland, but we have to. If I ever saw myself saying I'm excited going to Cleveland, I'd punch myself in the face, because I'm lying."
]"The ball became the same color as the sky. So, I wasn't able to see it ... I was sending mental signals for the ball not to come my way, because during that time of day it's impossible for me to see the ball so I lacked mental signals. I lacked in that area. Usually, I don't send mental signals. So, because this is the first time, I thought, please don't come my way."
On facing Daisuke Matsuzaka
] "I hope he arouses the fire that's dormant in the innermost recesses of my soul. I plan to face him with the zeal of a challenger."

On visiting the grave site of George Sisler, whose single-season hits record he broke:

]"I wanted to do that for a grand upperclassman of the baseball world."

Are we sure those didn't gain something in the translation?
You know, as in the formal translation.
I'm not sure anyone speaks like that.
If he does, I'm very impressed.

Those quotes sound like the reporters used the Babelfish site to do the translating to English.

There was also something in there about "top talent the alligator."

A lot of the previous 'interesting' quotes reek of Babelfish, or a bad translator.

The chicks-dig-my-singles junk seems to be more of Ichiro, or at least have less stilted/more creative translation.
