The golf got a little fun yesterday as Tiger goes for his first major since the wounded knee march a year ago June.

But when a tourney - especially a major - starts out with Tiger leading after Thursday, then Tiger leading after Friday, and Tiger building his 3-shot lead into a 5-shot lead by mid-day Saturday you figure it's all over but the fawning. Then suddenly his lead was being chopped down to the point where it was briefly gone - and it happened not because he was playing poorly but because others were actually playing well enough to catch him from behind. Padraig Harrington seemed to wake up from his year-long slumber; Vijay Singh wasn't blowing putts left and right for a change; Ernie Els was actually hanging around; and newcomers like Korea's Y.E. Yang were all out-playing Woods for most of the round.
The lead was back to 2 strokes by day's end, but at least Sunday doesn't look like it's going to be a formality the way it looked for a while on Saturday. Unless, of course, whathisname birdies 4 of the first 5 and it turns out to be just that.

So everyone is sailing along pretty well and the board has even tightened up a bit; Tiger has a one-shot lead over Yang & Harrington
And suddenly Harrington drops a [u:1mqtps3f]quintuple-bogie eight on the Par 3 Eighth[/u:1mqtps3f]!! A frickin' Snowman! You know it's not a good hole when your ball takes two trips to the water and you use the same club (in this case the pitching wedge) 4 different times.

And now Yang ties up Tiger.

Y.E. Yang = Tiger slayer in Korean.

I kept yelling at the TV every time they kept remarking about the possibility (and then the reality) of "the first Asian to win a major." That's bullshit - did they completely forget Vijay Singh's three majors? Or does he somehow magically not count as Asian and only East Asians count as Asian? It was driving me CRAZY.

What a shot by Yang.

I hate the idea that they feel the need to quailify any win with a " this is the first " whatever nationality , or ethnicity...

I didn't think of Singh either - but he qualifies as both a South Asian (ethnically Indian) AND an East Asian (from the Pacific Isle of Fiji)

I think the main reason Faldo and the others were excited about the Asian connection was that having someone win who started via one of the Asian tours raises the prestige of that tour and, in turn, of golf worldwide.

It was a good match on the whole - even though it was essentially a two horse race after Harrington blew up and everyone else faded a bit less dramatically. Tiger just never stole even ONE putt the whole day and seemed oddly conservative in his play. Yang, meanwhile, seemed cool as a cucumber.
It breaks an 11 major string of Tiger winning when holding the out-right lead after 3 rounds and something like 30+ matches overall.

Are we sure that wasn't just a putt?

OE: My wife feels about Tiger like we do about Jeter. She thinks there's just too much made about him, and she'd like "someone else to win for a change".

I mean no disrespect to your wife, but Jeter is nothing like Tiger.

Much is made about Tiger because no one has ever dominated golf the way he has, and when all is said and done, he has a chance to end up the greatest golfer ever. I don't know what "too much is made about him" means, but if he doesn't warrant it, no one does.

Jeter, on the other hand, is about the third or fourth best player on his team.

There are other key differences besides the "greatest of all time" thing when comparing Tiger to Jeter

1. Jeter is given credit for wins on a team sport. Tiger is given credit for wins in an individual sport.

2. Jeter is labeled a winner despite not having won a championship in 9 years. Tiger's last major came last year on a broken leg.

3. Jeter is labeled as clutch despite the fact no numbers support that statement. Tiger is labeled as clutch and has closing stats (even after Sunday) that are mind-boggling.

4. Jeter is a douchebag prick who kicks puppies, spits on little old ladies, tips poorly, parks in handicapped spaces, makes fun of fat people, steals ice cream from little kids, snitches, and has bad breath. Tiger is not.

Believe me, I've tried many of those arguements (I forgot about the bad breath), but they have fallen on deaf ears. She still can't understand why Mets fans feel that way about Jeter.

Wait, you used logic and reason but your wife still doesn't see things your way? That's shocking. That like, never happens to me. Ever.

First Asian to win a major? Well, isn't Tiger HALF Asian?

Centerfield

I think they mean Asian born. Tiger is the first Asian American (and the first African American) to win.

Majors won by active golfers:
Tiger = 14 (more than 1/4 of those he's entered)
Everyone else = 3 or fewer

Tourneys won by active golfers:
Fred Couples = 15
Ernie Els = 16
Nick Price = 18
Davis Love = 20
Vijay Singh = 34
Phil Mickelson = 36
Tiger = 70

Most tourneys won in each year:
1997 = Tiger
1998 = David Duval
1998 = Tiger
1999 = Tiger
2000 = Tiger
2001 = Tiger
2002 = Tiger
2003 = Tiger
2004 = Vijay Singh
2005 = Tiger
2006 = Tiger
2007 = Tiger
2008 = Tiger (Yes, the year he missed 1/2 of due to major surgery)
2009 = Tiger

I'd like someone else to win more often too but it's tough to "make too much" of THAT!!

FK, that's too logical. A few posts up, you'll see that with my wife, logic doesn't work.
Thanks for the ammo, anyhow.
