Because why not?

I was driving my little Zipcar Nissan Versa (jealous?) and listening to whatever preset station the previous driver had, and on comes, "Walking in Memphis. Please give me a considered answer to this one:

What is the pretty little thing waiting for the King down in the Jungle Room? I just can't figure it out.

This song was a huge hit in Ireland and I remember a lot of discussion on the meaning of the song , long before one could go online and find out easily.

As I remember it the " pretty little thing" is Lisa Marie waiting for her Dad.

Great song and when I get home I'm going to get it on iTunes

Q - Why should I buy a Kindle?

I'm seeing more and more people with it and I just can't see my self liking it but people who have it say they got used to it very quickly.

sharpie
Aug 19 2009 09:29 AM

There are arguments on both sides. I'll provide some. You would buy it because books cost only $10 and you can store a bazillion titles in it. Plus it looks cool and nobody on the subway knows what the hell you're reading.

You wouldn't buy it because it is a device that is replacing something that costs you nothing (reading) unlike, say, an ipod, as music must always be played through a device. The other thing I have heard from people who have them is that their retention rate is lower than with regular books since every book looks the same.

It's time to order a pizza. What toppings do you want and are there any that you veto?

Fman99
Aug 19 2009 10:40 AM

Answer: Gotta go with meat. Pepperoni and/or sausage. Maybe, maybe, some red onions on there.

I veto only if it's one of these crazy ass California pizzas, goat cheese, broccoli, no sauce. "White pizza." Sorry, that's not a pizza. It's an abortion. It's some alien thing and get it away from me.

Crust. Tomato sauce. Mozzarella cheese. Required.

Yes, in the middle of Nevada where there are no speed limits. Just for a couple of seconds but it was briefly exciting.

Have you ever walked out of a movie? What one(s)?

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr

Yes. "Fled," with Stephen Baldwin and Lawrence Fishburne playing charisma-free prison escapees/paycheck collectors. (Although "Bourne Supremacy" was a close one-- LWBH had the dizzies from the camera work.)

Now, back to lobster rolls...

dgwphotography

I walked out of Bourne Supremacy, too - I literally got motion sickness because of the camera work.

A lobster roll is nothing more than a glorified sandwich, just like sushi is just bait to me.
Sushi - bait or a delicacy?[/quote:6rem6h5s]

Not a fan of sushi. I'm not disgusted by it, but I wouldn't opt to eat it either, unless I got it along with something else, like in a bento box.

(I drove 102 MPH just a few weeks ago, in Germany. I was pretty much keeping up with the rest of the traffic in the left lane.)

And more in keeping with the spirit of the song, I think. It's more likely to be a Lisa Marie thing. (Or maybe I prefer not to think about the post-hookup nastiness what lies in that thick-ass shag after thirty years.)

The lyric/tonal divide in "We Will Rock You" has always given me a little pause. Is Queen aiming to convert these "buddies" and "old men" to their rockin' cause, or to f*ck them up royally, sequined-cutaway-jumpsuit-style?

What do those signs that say "Green Detour" and "Orange Detour" mean?

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Aug 21 2009 10:42 AM

In PA, yammean?

The idea behind the "colored" detours is to have predetermined, easy-to-follow alternate routes in case of emergency closure (whether due to flooding, Cloverfield monster attack or sheep overrun). The color-coding itself is supposedly directional-- orange's is for detours that are primarily westbound, green's eastbound, and blue and red mean north and south (respectively, I think... though I might be wrong on those-- I tend to do more east/west driving in PA).

Plasma or LCD?

LeiterWagnerFasterStrongr
Aug 23 2009 11:21 PM

Depends. If you're thinking small/tasteful-- LCD (lighter and more movable; good resolution; less risk of burn-in; generally more durable). If you're thinking 50" beast, I'd go plasma (slight edge in picture quality, which is more evident at the big end of the pool; more bang for your buck; better viewing angles than LCD).

Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. In mono. Second was Urban Spaceman by the Bonzo Dog Band. Those two pretty much formed my musical tastes. :) What's your favorite nonfiction (and non-baseball) book?

My favorite holiday is Christamas without a doubt. If people would maintain the spirit of Christmas throughout the year, the world would be a better place. (IMHO) Off the top of my head, I would say that my favorite non-fiction book would be Tuesdays with Morrie. What is your favorite baseball related book?

The Great American Baseball Card Flipping, Trading and Bubble Gum Book. One of the best books ever about baseball, trading cards, and life in general. What's your least favorite baseball-related book.

Ahem, the only correct answer to the previous question is "Faith and Fear in Flushing," though the baseball card book you mention is indeed fantastic!!! As for the least favorite, I'd pick Peter Golonbock's "Amazin'" just because I was so disappointed in the number of errors that were just so sloppy. Saw him do it live, in a concert I reviewed during college. Even then, it looked weird-- he's one gawky, long-limbed dude. Their other songs weren't terribly groundbreaking, either, but they also weren't terrible. Of course, he kept a fisherman's hat pulled down tight throughout the show, so it's entirely possible this was a pay-no-attention-to-the-pastiche-maker-behind-the-curtain scenario. What are the worst, and the best fast-food items you've ever consumed?

By all reports, he's one of those studio-perfectionist, one-man-band types like Stephen Merritt or Trent Reznor or Prince... only, you know, not as good. The album's actually pretty well-crafted, too-- at least from a pop-hooks-and-sterling-production standpoint (the lyrics are mostly overwrought, anti-corporate phillippics). An overlooked little pop record, actually. [He also seems to have parlayed one-hit-wonderness into a career behind the mixing board, like a lankier Trevor Horn.]

Re: Answer/Ask

I don't know much about the Knicks, but I think D'Antoni is the guy they want when they sign LeBron or Dwight Howard or whoever next year. Funny how it seems everything the Knicks have done the last several years is put them to be in great position for next year's free agent period. I watched this thing last night on History Channel about Hitler's family and found it interesting enough to start googling Hitler's nephew, William Patrick "Willy" Hitler, and found an article that divulged two really interesting things: 1) Hitler's bloodline is alive and well in New York state today, with a set of 4 brothers born to Willy Hitler (who did change his last name after serving in the US Navy in WWII, by the way). 2) The 4 brothers took a pact to all abstain from having kids so Hitler's family line dies with them. My question is, if you found out you were descended from Adolph Hitler, what the hell would you do, if anything?

Re: Answer/Ask

You know, I've been thinking about this for days, and I think cutting yourself off from the choice of reproducing for that reason is sort of giving in to the big nutcase, by suggesting that biology is destiny, that we are our bloodlines. I appreciate the gift those four men have tried to give mankind --- and there's no telling if some manaiacal cult of the future would try and recruit a descendent of mine to lend macabre credability to whatever scheme they were up to --- but
[*:3v44cqnm]They're not even direct descendents of AH, but of his brother; [/*:m:3v44cqnm] [*:3v44cqnm]Isn't there a somewhat credible belief that AH started a direct bloodline with some French maiden during World War I?; and [/*:m:3v44cqnm] [*:3v44cqnm]Not for nothing, but by ending Hitler's alleged bloodline, you're ending one more Jewish bloodline as well. A thread of one, anyhow.[/*:m:3v44cqnm][/list:o:3v44cqnm] I'd change my name, to be sure. Who needs the grief? But Willy Hitler, by taking arms against Uncle Adolf's Reich, took a step toward the distinguishing of the saner members of the family as persons to be judged not for their blood, but for their character, and that seems like a good tradition to continue. "In those days people will no longer say," the prophet Jeremiah foretold, " the fathers have eaten sour grapes, and the children's teeth are set on edge'." I'd carry on, if I was so inclined, and any charitable enterprise I undertook during my life (such a short thing in the great scheme of things) would be toward the relief of those he persecuted, and the extinction of the causes he championed. And I'd teach my children to do the same, hopefully with wild success. Why end bloodlines while the lines of hatred march onward? Because march they do. ----------------- What are you waiting for? Why?
