Do you enjoy this cover?

Cover songs can sometimes be tricky. Because consuming them is too tied up in your self-image. On one hand, it can be self validating --- I like J.T. Earle and I like the Replacements and Earle does a cover of the signature Replacements song "Can't Hardly Wait," so how can I dare dislike such a cover when it so justifies my taste. But forget that flattery. It's certainly possible that such a cover could stink.

On the other hand I may dislike Guy X, and if he covers a song by an act I like, well, how dare he?! It's an abomination!

But it's not, of course. It's still a good song, and if Guy X debuted the song, it should have/perhaps still would have been recognized as such, and it deserves at least some of that recognition. It certainly shouldn't be compared to/necessarily detract from any definitive version you like? Right? Right?

Anyhow, here's how you play. You put aside all that prejudice that ruins your taste for this sweet world. You listen to the song, you answer yes or no, tell me why or why not, and post your own cover.

Not crazy for the Willie version.

I like Aerosmith's studio version of this on their debut album but couldn't find
it on youtube. Here's a raucous live version ...

I like the Allman's version better, too. It's a song that needs electric guitar under it. Willie was effin around with it too much, and I love Willie.

Wasn't familiar with Aerosmith's version (or the original). Failed miserably shutting off prejudices there, but I don't like Aerosmith and side-by-side, dug the original much better. That style of music seemed to suit the song better.

I totally fell in love with this chick Saturday at Santa Monica when she played this song. There's no coronet, but the kazoo goes a helluva lon way. And feel free to be swayed by her visual tastiness, too. I was.

While it makes sense to bemoan the absence of the Allman guitar lick and harmonies, when Willie doesn't add much new to replace them, but I'm certainly not asking if the cover is better, only if it's an otherwise enjoyable alternative. Definitive versions are, well, definitive.

Well for the record, I enjoyed Willie's just fine then. His version with the acoustic guitar and all that harp make me picture a guy on horseback running from the law and some dusty town.

The electric guitar on the Allman's conjures up images of being on the run on a motorcycle on route 66 somewhere.

Otherwise enjoyable alternative, yes. Point to Willie.

Ok, regarding your lovergirl there, she's struggling a little with her pitch-pipe. Who wouldn't in such an evironment, but still. I'm sure she would sound better and more confidendent on a studio recording without fat guy wheeling his bike in front of her, but not quite there yet to my ears.
Good enough to keep me curious though.

I'm kinda indifferent to the Oak Ridge Boys doing the White Stripes.

I wonder how you're feelin about this?

Heard the Dino Jr. cover before. Bleh, he sings like the Mets hit.

Ol' rooster hair, Brian Setzer of the Stray Cats and later his own orchestra, brings the goods on his version of "Sleepwalk." I like this solo rendition.

Yo, check the new "Meet Glen Campbell" album, where he covers popular songs ... in the style of Glen Campbell. I think this works a la some of Cash's latter-day stuff, without the "Man in Black" branding. Always helps to have wonderful song to sink yer teeth into, listen to him ... Sing... Re: Do you enjoy this cover?

I like it, but the arrangement and mix sound so contemporary --- even taking the signature banjo from the original --- his Glen Campbellness kind of gets lost in there.

Re: Do you enjoy this cover?

I always thought Campbell was more talented than he usually got credit for; Good singer, good guitar player. He suffered from a lack of cool, a condition which was partially self-inflicted as that "branding" - like that of John Denver's happy, clean-cut country boy - didn't help him out any. If Campbell played baseball he'd be a lower-case Gary Carter or Steve Garvey type.

That album's pretty fantastic. First time I heard any of it was the Travis cover and I loved it, but didn't know what the hell I was listening to. Particularly love the rendition of "Jesus".

No, no I did not. I like the original a lot and I like the idea of a cover in this style very much, but I didn't dig this one anyway. She's too stiff. Sounds like she's not allowed to move her mouth or something when she sings. Phrasing's a little rigid, too. But I clicked on some of her other YouTube clips and kinda liked her. Her playing is stiff also. No dynamics. This is a song of passion girl --- attachment, not detachment.

Yah, he loves that sound on his vocals. That song's off an EP of Harrison songs that Jim James did when he found out Harrison died. All the My Morning Jacket records pretty much sound like that, too. Sometimes annoying.

While on the subject of George Harrison, I dig this "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame celebrity jam featuring Jeff Lynne and Tom Petty on vocals and an EPIC guitar solo by Prince to close it out. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifp_SVrlurY Yes, Prince. He's got chops.

Re: Do you enjoy this cover?

That cover is remains true to the original and sounds good. I've been a fan of Tom Petty for a long time, so I'm sure that helps. Prince is one strange bird, but he has a tremendous musical gift. His guitar playing has often been overshadowed by his flamboyant stage personna, but the man can really tear it up when he wants to.

I never really thought there was a melody in there --- always seemed more like a big dumb chant they wrote in about 30 seconds --- but she found half of one. I give her credit for that.
