Was making calls with the LWBetterHalfer to schedule an exploratory appointment-- we're shopping for a baby doc-- with a fairly large (7-8 doctors, a passel of nurse practitioners and PAs, and a midwife) private practice.

The Abrupt Young Woman on the phone asked LWBH when she was due, and LWBH said, "March."

AYWOTP replies,"Oh, well, we're closed in March."

It's got to be renovations (I'm guessing). But still... a multi-doctor practice? Closed-- not relocated-- for an entire month? In spring?

[And, oh yeah-- I'm-a be a dad.]

Thanks for the wishes-- it's especially gratifying since things ended badly with our first attempt (earlier this year).

When I step back and think about it, it's so mundane (hence the little font). But yeah... world-shifting, no doubt. We're just nine weeks in, and I find myself staring a little too long at babies-relating-to-parents on the subway (a habit I've really got to work on-- I don't have enough money for diapers AND legal fees at present).

We're planning on going the surprise-gender route, at least partly since our families both tend to blue-and-pink the hell out of new arrivals, and we'd rather not put gender-role pressure on the baby-- it could easily dent the head. I'm rooting for us to use "Proof" as a placeholder rather than "it"-- as in "proof my junk works."

That's the way to do it, man. We went the whole mystery-gender route and got tons of mint green teddy bears.

Aug 18 2009 12:09 PM

For both of our kids, we had them tell us the gender. A pregnancy is a long haul, and finding out midway whether it's a boy or a girl gave us a new surge of excitement that helped get us through the second half.

Also, it was nice to be able to start referring to the baby by its actual name, rather than its fetal name. (For our first child, the fetal name was, for some reason unrelated to Seinfeld, "Newman." My daughter's fetal name was "Benny Agbayani.")

Mazel Tov LWFS! That's wonderful news :)

And yeah, nothing changes your life as much as parenthood does!

I always wanted to know the gender in advance. Patience is not my strong suit. Plus it helped ease the blow with my second and third kids for my daughter to know early on that she wasn't going to get the sister she wanted.

We always had in utero names for the kids while we were fighting over real names. MK's in utero name was 41 (that was around the time of the Seinfeld episode where George wanted to name a child 7).

Mazel tov my friend!

I'd vote against the "surprise gender" and in favor of a known one. But that's just me.

Advice, from a guy with little kids. Do these things now before you're a father, and the opportunities to do them disappear for several years.

1. Go to the movies, if that's your thing.
2. Take a romantic getaway somewhere with your LWBH.

If they're going to close down an obstetrics office in March they really need to do a better job at informing potential patients in advance of their 'no sex in June' policy.

I'm on our local County Board of Health and pregnant women are at the top of the priority list for receiving the H1N1 vaccine. The can only receive the "dead virus" by injection, not the "live virus" by nasal inhalation. Children under the age of 2 are second on the priority list for innoculation.

Your wife really should discuss the H1N1 innoculation with her physician and give serious consideration to having the shot for the welfare of both she and the future little LWYP.

The day started with LWBH went in for a routine checkup-- among the weekly/biweekly jobbers over the last two months of the gestatin'-- and ended up with our doctor having heard a "deceleration" in the heartbeat, issuing immediate orders for LWBH to get herself to Downtown for ultrasound/two hours of fetal-heart-rate monitoring... and possible inducement. (Also, since we don't even have a carseat yet, it spurred the least convincing "It'll be all right" speech I've ever given upon hearing the news.)

Anyway, Doc Sturdivant needs to get her young-ass ears checked and settle the f*ck down, as it was a false alarm.

March 24th, 2005. A day that started much like your day did. My wife went in for her weekly checkup, 36 1/3 weeks pregnant, on a Thursday at the near end of a week that she had felt "not so hot" for much of it. I, clueless as usual, go from work to the gym and am exercising away, cell phone in my locker, in Rome (50 miles from home).

The wife's doctor, an ace whom we both trust in fully, makes a comparable determination to what you heard today. The baby's heart rate is elevated and my wife is, to her own surprise, having contractions. Not that you or she would know one from a snake bite if it's your first pregnancy.

It's go time, the doc tells her. It's 4:30 PM. Call your husband and have him meet us at the hospital, you're going to be a parent today.

Well, too bad for Fwife that her husband is a dizzy fuck with a phone in his locker. Finish my workout only to find that there are three messages on it. Not good. My wife never calls me on that phone.

"It's go time! But run to the house and get my overnight bag."

Oh, all right. Sure, no problem. Drive home, get the bag. Take out the trash, too, just because it was that night of the week and I'm a mental patient. Then, shoot downtown to the hospital.

She calls me again. It's now 7 PM. She tells me that if I'm not in the room by 7:15 they go into the operating room without me. Luckily, by this time I am in the hospital elevator. We go into the OR at 7:10 and Fboy is birthed at 7:40 PM. Two hours after I get the call.

A crazy day, to be sure. The moral? KEEP YOUR PHONE ON YOUR PERSON. And, yeah, get a carseat. We didn't have one yet at that point but Fboy did a week in the NICU and it gave us time to get our ducks in a row.

We did the baby-registry thing-- BuyBuyBaby. Nobody's gone for the carseat-- a sweet convertible in chocolate brown-- yet.

Honestly, though, the most trying thing about today was trying to talk nervous in-laws down from the ledge (20 incoming phonecalls in 2 hours at the hospital... 15 of which came after the "false alarm" notification to everyone). I'm thinking about going need-to-know basis with LWBH's well-meaning sister, who is a gigantic raw nerve on legs... with a bossy streak, no less.

Re: LeiterWagnerYoungerPooper (Split from Thread w/o a Purpose)

Been there, done that.

You have to understand that Ob-Gyn's are absolutely paranoid about lawsuits, so they're going to play things extra cautiously if there's any indication that anything at all could possibly be amiss.

And I went through the same thing with my parents. I had a miscarriage scare with one of my pregnancies, and the doctor told me that I had to get some rest for a few days. Except I couldn't rest because my mother kept waking me up with phone calls. Your instinct about informing the grandparents=and-aunt-to-be on a need to know basis is a good one.

Re: LeiterWagnerYoungerPooper (Split from Thread w/o a Purpose)

I'm glad to hear all is well and it was just a false alarm. I can only imagine what a nerveracking experience it was for your family to have such a scare at this late date.

The wife and I delayed starting our family for several years after our marriage since I was still in grad school and we could scarcely afford to feed ourselves, let alone a child. By the time I had graduated and got settled into my job and bought our first house we were closing in on our 6th anniversary. By then, my wife's parents were providing not so subtle hints that they were growing impatient waiting for their first grandchild. A small, child-sized maple rocking chair delivered as a house warming gift made their desires quite clear.

Shortly after settling into our new home, we learned that were expecting our first child. We excitedly shared our joy with our parents and families living out of state. Unfortunately, my wife had a miscarriage a few weeks later. We called and informed our families of the sad news. They were obviously disappointed and concerned about us, but my father-in-law was positively crushed and it broke my heart for him to be so disappointed.

A few months later, Mrs. Doc was once again pregnant. We decided that this time we would not share the news with anyone until we knew the likelihood of another miscarriage was greatly diminished. I think she was in her 4th or 5th month before we informed our families of our impending addition. Luckily, all went well and our son was born shortly before our 7th anniversary.

We took the same "tell them when we must" approach leading up to the birth of our daughter 2 years later.

I wish LWFS and his wife the best of health for all involved going forward in this process. There is no greater joy in life than when you hold your newborn child in your arms for the first time.

Glad to hear it was a false alarm. It really is incredible how much your life changes when you start going into this "parenting" thing.

But it is far and away the best and most rewarding thing I have ever done. Everything Doc says is correct except for the last line. The better feeling comes 2 years later when you can sleep through the night again. How I yearn for that.

Got to the restaurant-- Spanish Tavern in Union, NJ-- after most of the guests, thanks to traffic.

Got in, dropped off the better half... and realized that the other guys there had been sat down already... in corners. Got nervous.

Promptly got cajoled into staying by my mom and a few of the other elders (including a well-meaning, sorta-batshit aunt who, since she randomly skips family holiday parties, "never sees me anymore," and brought a used clock radio/CD player for me because she heard I "have an office now"). Suppressed cussing inside my head, and put on a happy face.

After a few sangrias, though, the pain ebbed. And my mom-- who planned it-- went light on the cutesy games, thankfully, so we got off lucky there. Got a lot of booty, as well. A LOT (leader in the clubhouse is the Beaba Babycook-- a 4-in-1 boil/steam/puree/reheat thing in fetching Euro green and orange). In a bit of an upset, just one Metsian gift item (a hooded towel) was received. I think the folks figured that we'd take care of that ourselves.

All in all, a nice, pleasant bait-and-switch. And with a haul so nice-- have I mentioned the gifts?-- I'm thinking about having a faux-kid or two just for the showers.

No car seat.

But we got out to Buy Buy Baby yesterday morning before the guac, etc.-- we have our eye on a standard Graco carseat and mean-looking Uppababy jog-thing (it's pretty-- whether it's the Jaguar of strollers or the BMW x5... well, research will tell).

We also toured Downtown finally. Nice, small facilities (as all our offsite research had implied); even a "tub room" for those using a midwife. One problem we noticed-- no real waiting area on/near the maternity center.

Where did the Lunchie-folk (and anyone else who's ever delivered/had an inpatient procedure there) wait, I wonder? I'm thinking we might have to decamp my sizable extended family/any bored/unemployed friends down the street at a bar/restaurant.

Standard Snugride or Snugride 32, most likely in a sporty Bombay or zippy Zurich color pattern. Good padding, and good neck and side-impact support, according to reviews and informal surveys with passing moms in the store, and confirmed via independent, strenuously-scientific LWFS Labs slapping-it-around-when-the-salesman-wasn't-looking testing.

The convertible ones-- that go from rearfacing-infant-seat to frontfacing-seat-for-thing-that-giggles-when-I-say-"poop"-- are tempting, though. And when I say "tempting," I mean, "I'm cheaper than a Scots prostitute."

But then, you're asking the guy who had a full 10-minute conversation with a co-worker about a "boppy" while thinking she was talking about our bottle-warmer.

That seems highly workable.

As of yesterday, though, her employer had offered LWBH a luxe stroller as a maternity gift (to make up for her lack of actual fully-paid maternity leave, maybe?), though. Hence, our strongly considering this guy, which works with the Greco given an inexpensive adapter:

Easily collapsible aircraft-hull aluminum, pop-and-release back wheels, and workable up through 60 pounds (the toddler seat and bassinet switch out). Plus, I'm pretty sure it can take a direct cruise-missile hit and keep on rolling.

Her employers treat her poorly, so we're inclined to accept the gift pretty guiltlessly.

We think it got in yesterday-- my downstairs neighbor apparently claimed it by mistake (she just popped a lil' pooper out herself, and has been ordering a bunch of stuff via Wal-Mart and Target online).

Like I just wrote Edge, BetterHalfer couldn't stop smiling once she processed it. (Not even through a mid-morning burping fit. A little bit cute, a little bit creepy. :))

And oh, yeah-- the belly has started dropping.

As the gift came from neither of those stores, and was clearly addressed to LWFS and LWBH by name, my wife says she is a selfish witch.

Unless of course you're friends with her, in which case she's merely confused in the early days of motherhood. How cute.

I never gave birth anywhere near my due dates. The closest was my older son, who was ten days late. My daughter was premature (5 weeks early) and MK was three weeks early.

I've done well in office baby pools by picking a date two weeks after the due date whenever it's a first-time mother.

My first-born came six days late, but that was a C-section. There were never any signs of labor; he had to be removed because he was getting too big for a safe delivery.

Home picking up stuff.

The name's Artemis Rose, and she's small, but active-- one of the more active newborns I've ever seen, actually. Right out of the box, she came c'rect with more kicks, thrown elbows and spread-eagles than a JoseJoseJose handshake. Then, after dinner, she calmed down considerably. Huge, dark eyes on this one (there's some pics over at the FB page), and big, downy cheeks. She's like an adorable, jowly shark.

Back to the hospital now with soup and tea. LWBH is recovering from a long, fast-moving day, while Artie's* busy looking loverly and charming the crap out of the nursing staff. Every time I look at her, my heart feels like it's going to explode. I can't imagine how LWBestestMother feels.

Also, no offense miniMM, but she's not dating 'til she's Social-Security eligible.

*Or is it "Arty?" Still haven't decided on that.

Re: LeiterWagnerYoungerPooper --- Artemis Rose

So, she seems past the colic for the most part, and is getting more stimulus-reactive by the day. But she's also proving quite the insomniac, post-late night feeding. What to do in the interim?

Well, I've started a little iPod Shuffle Hour, in which I plop the LWYP in her Boppy and play iTune roulette, charting her reactions for future reference... or, really, because it's late, and it's mildly amusing. The results of last night's initial session:

This Land is Your Land (Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings)-- The only chosen selection, she seemed to dig it. Two smiles, both concurrent with trumpet blares. Some pursing of lips, as if calling for the bottle. Stiffening and light kicking of legs.

Allison (Elvis Costello)-- Nothing but a blank stare, and some rolling. For four minutes. Unfortunate.

Nanny Wine (Byron Lee)-- There was some startled eye-opening, face-scrunching, and some light screaming. We shan't be listening to Mommy's soca again anytime soon.

I Know What Boys Like (The Waitresses)-- Cooing. Smiling and ostensibly-happy shaking of balled fists. Even some apparent giggling, when Dad sang along. I am only slightly disturbed that a song about manipulating men turned out to be her early favorite.

Cactus (The Pixies)-- Some smiling and happy shaking. She seemed to enjoy the vocal imitations of guitar wah-wah the most.

The Spoiler (Eddie Purrell)-- A Stax bumper/minor hit from the mid-60s. Considering how much she liked the Dap-Kings, she was curiously impassive. More dead-eyed than a mail-order bride during Sex Night, in fact.

Against All Odds (The Postal Service)-- Stretching legs. Lip pursing. Furrowed brow, as if to say, "Someone made an electronic-pop cover of this?"

7 (Prince)-- Some stiff kicking. Some yawning. Some bored yelps. Some pretty significant hints that it's bedtime for Artie.

WINNERS: The Waitresses, The Pixies, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

LOSERS: Terrible coked-up-sounding soca, Stax chestnuts

That cynicism is slackening some. Experiencing enough first-time-trying-fruit or first-time-hearing-the-Stones moments will do that, I guess.

Also, she's not Greek, but she does contain a veritable chorus of ethnicities-- Salvadoran-Filipino-German (it's a shame LWBH isn't, like, part Senegalese or Kenyan, 'cause then we'd have the full immunity cocktail).

We've been very, very, very lucky.
