So if you want to make it a different indicator - maybe one not so mole-like - then fine, but I wouldn't get rid of it altogether just because it looks so mole-ish.

Re: New Layout

Hey, don't ask me! I just work here!

Part of the upgrade was the elimination of HTML, which presented a security loophole that could have been exploited. It's kind of like having to take your shoes off at the airport; it's a sacrifice you make for improved security. Personally, I think HTML is about as dangerous as shoes, but this isn't my call. I can do all kinds of configuration stuff, but there are limits.

Re: New Layout

Thanks!

Okay, now for the icons that accompany the individual threads:

As before, orange means that there are new posts, grey means that you've read all the posts.

The blue circle behind the NY indicates that the topic is "hot." (Means it's hit some post threshold.)

The black border around the NY replaces the Beltran mole. If you've posted in a thread, you'll see the black border. If not, you won't.

Frayed Knot
Sep 04 2009 07:40 AM
Re: New Layout

Never quite saw the purpose in the "hot topic" indicator. Much of the time it simply means the topic is old (more than one page seems to be the threshold) although most boards seem to have them and I don't know if it's even optional here.
If it is optional to have I'd just as soon vote to kill it. If not it's no big deal.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 04 2009 07:45 AM

Edgy DC
Sep 04 2009 07:53 AM
Re: New Layout

Yeah, "hot" doesn't tell me anything I can't figure out for myself. If anything, I think a hot topic should be one with 10 posts in the last hour or something, not something that's hit a threshold of X amount of posts total.

Probably not. We sometimes see a bit of overkill on the quoting. Three is probably enough. You can always cut some of the text that you're quoting and bring it down to one level. Doing this has the benefit of making your post easier to read.

Well, I was just funning with the 10, and I'll happily scale it back to five. But my experience says that it's better --- at least in a community free of maniacs --- to liberate the tools and crack down on the abuser, when and if that becomes necessary.
