KTE: Phillies 9/11-9/13

What was thought to be a pivotal series is now rendered completely and utterly meaningless.
Just about says it all doesn’t it?

Anyway, Mets’ division tragic number stands at 7 (6 for the Wild Card), so a sweepby the Phillies would put the Mets out of their division misery. The Phillies Divisional magic number stands at 19 over the Marlins and 16 over the Braves.

In any event, who are the soon-to-be threepeating NL East Champion Phillies?
Well, not much has changed lineup wise since August;
Howard at first, Utley at second, Rollins at short, Feliz at third, Ibanez, Victorino and Werth in the outfield, and Ruiz behind the plate.
Ibanez had cooled from his torrid spring, but is still hitting .280, 30 homers and 83 RBI, Ryan Howard is the only Phillie with 100 plus RBI so far this season with Utley, and Werth behind him with 85 and 84 respectively.
Pitching this weekend should be
Cole Hamels (8-9 4.32) Friday night against Nelson Figueroa
JA Happ (10-4 2.77) Saturday, 4:05 FOX game against Mike Pelfrey
Sunday, both to be announced against Redding and Maine.
Pitching wise, Cliff Lee has given the Phils quite a boost, to the tune of a 6-2 record and 3.11 ERA. While Happ and Jamie Moyer are the only 10 or more game winners, though Joe Blanton does have 9 going into Thursday night’s game against the Nationals. Also recently it seems the Phillies have been doing “Closer by Committee” as Brad Lidge, despite 28 saves, has an ERA of 7.11 with 7 losses. Ryan Madson has been stepping up, and has recorded 2 of his 6 saves this week. His ERA so far on the year is 3.11
Ex-Mets:
Pedro Martinez, Chan Ho Park, Tyler Walker and Miguel Cairo.

Happ is hurt and we get Moyer on Saturday instead.

Maine is pitching game 1 on Sunday. Game 2 is the ESPN national broadcast so get your earplugs or mute button ready.

Be interesting to see what C Manual does with the closer spot - not only for this series but the rest of the season and especially the post-season.
He yanked Lidge out in the middle of an inning the other night. Having a "convenience store" ERA plus 10 blown saves this year put Lidge on thin ice to begine with; when he then loaded the bases w/one out in a 2-run game on Tuesday his manager had seen enough. Madson went in and got the save and also also got the save opp the very next night.
When the post-season rolls around it's possible that some guy named Pedro might get a shot at closing some games. He did get up to 119 pitches in his last outing but I can't see him nudging out any of the starters come October.

Also, Brett Myers is back from injury. Not sure how he's pitching so far but I'm betting he's still a retard.

Blanton got his butt kicked by the Nationals on Thursday - although a 5-run 9th made it a close game in the end.

Matt Stairs hit his ridiculous 5th PH HR for the season - which also doubled as his 12th career Grand Slam.

After the Marlins swept the Mets, the Phillies lead is down to 5 games.

Hopefully the Marlins will keep on winning, and the Mets will do some damage to the Phillies this weekend. I know, it's really unlikely that the Mets will hurt the Phillies, but wouldn't it be nice?

Yeah, that would be nice.

They may be going into playoffs, but their pitching staff is still a mess. It would be nice if the Mets were the ones to let them know that.

But I'll take wins against anybody. Phils, Royals, Montgomery Buscuits, Dorados de Chihuahua, Cleveland Spiders, FC Barcelona, Bad News Bears... .

True, the Mets need to go 11-11 the rest of the way to avoid 90 losses. (They just need to go 1-21 to avoid 100 losses.)

The Phillies collapsing and missing the playoffs would be a wonderful finish to a lousy season. I don't expect it to happen, but I didn't expect 2007 either.

I'm actually more interested in harpooning Florida's shot at the post-season than the Philly's - although I'll take any party-spoiling I can get.

If you lived where I live, among Phillies fans, you wouldn't feel that way!

Do I correctly recall that the Mets stopped wearing the NYPD-etc. hats on September 11 last season?

Re: KTE: Phillies 9/11-9/13

Yes, they switched to those flag-within-the-insignia caps that all 30 teams wore.

I expect we'll see the same tonight, or maybe for the whole weekend.

Re: KTE: Phillies 9/11-9/13

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I think I'd rather the Braves swoop in and steal this one.

But if it's between Florida and the Phils... yeah, I've got to say that I've got to root for the tanned folk.
