Ernie Harwell

91, "upbeat" as he fights an incurable cancer. A man who gave so much to baseball.

That's sad. I haven't seen or heard much of his work, but he's always seemed like a nice guy.

There are not many of those guys left , I remember Ernie making a similar comment when Bob Murphy passed.

A great announcer. It takes a lot for me to say that about someone that doesn't work for one of my teams but Harwell was a wonderful listen.

Re: Ernie Harwell

His Wikipedia page, which I probably can't link to, shows a photo of a statue of Ernie outside Comerica Park.

I know the first statue at Citi Field has to go to Tom Seaver, but a Ralph/Lindsey/Bob statue should perhaps be the second one. And hopefully while Ralph is still alive. (Maybe they'll do full statues of Lindsey and Bob, but just a closeup of Ralph's hands holding a microphone.)

I wonder which sports jacket they'd have Lindsay wearing.

Re: Ernie Harwell

I have little confidence that any statues will be going up at Citi Field to honour anyone. I like the idea of having one for Ralph , Lindsay and Bob but I doubt they are waiting for Ralph to "cross the river" first.

The only statues going up at Citi Field will be of Brooklyn Dodgers.

Re: Ernie Harwell

I've met Ernie several times, and he is every bit the gentleman you've read. An absolute prince. He is, possibly, the most popular person in the state.

The statue at Comerica is nice. It's far away from the other statues they have, and right by the main entrance. The team did screw up one aspect. There was a spelling error in the inscription on the base. They did kind of a half-assed job to fix it.

Did they use Liquid Paper?

Wanna bet?
I mean jeez can we get over this already?

It would be really nice to have something of The Troika somewhere
like that statue of Ernie. I don't know how that would come about,
but just whining about Brooklyn Fred ain't a good start.

Just about.

It's polished rock with the inscription carved in. I think it said something like "...Tigers's...." and they kind of filled in the unneeded S, but you can easily see what they tried to do.

Re: Ernie Harwell

Actually, a statue to the original pre and post game radio crew would be interesting. It included, IIRC, Howard Cosell (or Maybe Marty Glickman), ex-tennis player Gussie Moran and one more person. I'm thinkin' that was Ralph Branca. There's a better chance that statue would be done, since Branca was an ex-Dodger. (Sorry, Kase, couldn't resist :) ).

Re: Ernie Harwell

I'd like to see Mets honored at Citi - Tom, Lindsay, Ralph and Bob, yeah. But the last post did remind me of the pre-and post-game team from my Dodger-loving youth -- Marty Glickman, Ward Wilson, Burt Lee Jr. and Gorgeous Gussie Moran.
