Labor Day Kwiz

Frayed Knot
Sep 07 2009 06:06 PM

Not that it's Labor Day related, but I labored over making it and now you folks can labor over answering it.

It's inspired by the Jeter/Gehrig discussion in another thread, my point being that the club record for most hits (like the most HRs by a catcher record from a few years back) is semi-obscure and not really relevant on a league-wide basis ... unless it involves Jeter of course.
The other thing I discovered (and what I suspected and therefore what got me started with the research) is that the most hits mark is higher in 13 of the other 15 non-expansion clubs, further evidence of the non-importance of this "event".

Anyway, can you name the career hits leader for each of the 30 franchises? ... and for good measure throw in each club's HR leader too.

Rules/hints:
- these are franchise questions. So it counts the Braves in all 3 cities as one club, not just Atlanta numbers count. Not separate Brooklyn/LA records for the Dodgers. Ditto with their being only one answer for old Senators/Twins, one more for newer Senators/Rangers, and one for Expos/Nationals, etc.
- in 9 of the 30 cases the same guy holds both the team hit & HR marks, so 51 different guys hold these 60 marks
- only 3 franchises have lower hit marks than the Mets; only 5 have lower HR marks
- of the 60 possible answers two are current Mets, and four are one-time Mets (six really but only if you include the two NYM answers ... duh!)
- obviously the numbers are not necessary, I'll just include them for the correct answers
- the obvious answers are given, leaving 57 more to be filled in
- let's keep guesses down to about 5 at a time or less

Whoops. This is what I get from typing too quickly. That Ruth guy has the MFY record.

The expansion team records are fun to try to guess. Let's say:
Marlins: Conine (hits) and Sheffield (HRs).
Rockies: Walker (hits) and Bichette (HRs).

Trying to get caught up here

* Castillo is your Marlins all-time hits leader. This also solves the 2nd 'current Met' answer

* Kaline for Tigger HRs is correct at 399

* Pudge & Juan Gone are both right for the stRanger record holders

* Cap Anson is your Cubs hits leader

* Speaker & Colavito are both INcorrect

* Raines - No

* Ichiro - No

* Luis Gonzelez - Yes (more than 1/4 of them in one season)

* Aubrey Huff - Very nice. The Rays have both the lowest Hits leader and the lowest HR leader, although Carl Crawford is only a few hits behind Castillo's Marlins record.

* Boudreau, wrong. Thome right

* Edgar Martinez is correct for Seattle hit king

* Puckett is NOT the Twins hits leader ... unless we're counting women (oh no he di'int)

* Schmidt is Phils hit king too

* Windield is wrong, Salmon was already guessed as was Clemente

* Rickey is NOT correct, neither is Canseco

* Nate Colbert (who I think also holds the season record for highest pct of his team's RBIs) is the Padre HR leader (and maybe for a while the way they're going and in that park)

* Nap Lajoie has indeed been the Injuns hit record for the last century or so

Miggy - no
Stormin' Gorman - No
Aparicio - No
McGwire - Yes, which of course makes Foxx a no

I'm thinking Yount for the Aaron/Schmidt double, as Brew HR king.

Luis Gonzalez, same, D'backs (just for longevity-- who else COULD it be).

Natspos hits-- Dawson?

Re: Labor Day Kwiz

Yes, both Yount and Luis Gonzalez are their team's double-dippers - to go along with Schmidt, Aaron, Musial, Mays, Helton, Ripken & Brett
That makes Finley a no. Andre Dawson is also a no.
But Mike Lowell is correct as Marlin powerman

And it was wrong then too.

Appling is the White Sox guy

Aparicio is not the mystery Latin

Eddie Collins is wrong

So we're looking for a Latin in the A's org whose career started past mid-century and was not only active on this date 44 years ago but did something memorable (though a bit odd) on the field that day.
Oh yeah, and he played a long time and got a lot of hits, mostly, although not exclusively, for the A's.

Re: Labor Day Kwiz

btw, the "odd" circumstance that occurred 44 years ago today was Campaneris playing all 9 positions in one game.
Seeing that note prompted me to look up the game.
- it was a late-season (obviously) meaningless-for-both teams game vs the Angels and Charlie Finley did like a good stunt every now and then
- Campy started at his usual SS then went to 2B & 3B (switching with Ed Charles) then made the rounds of the OF, then 1B, then P, then C
- he made one error in the game, as a RF
- pitching the 8th inning of a game the A's were losing by one, he gave up one run
- catching in the 9th he was run into by an Angel player (a pissed off one maybe?) on the last out of the inning and knocked out of the game
- A's scored twice in their half of the 9th to tie it (so they would have won it had Campy not given up the 8th inning run)
- game wound up going 13 inning (with the A's losing) but Campy, having been knocked out of the game, wasn't around to play his 10th, 11th, 12th & 13th positions

I think somebody (perhaps a minor leaguer) has managed to play ten positions, under the theory that DH is a position.

Re: Labor Day Kwiz

btw, looks like the next closest to taking over a team hit mark are:
* Vernon Wells with the Jays and Ichiro in Seattle - both are in the 200-250 hits away range
* Wright is some 450 behind Eddie Krane
* Hanley Ramirez needs around 500 for Castillo's Florida mark

Expect a little less fanfare when/if those happen.
