It's hard to believe that the Pirates have not have a winning season in my son's lifetime -- and today he started his senior year in high school.

How can be that bad for that long?

It will be worth watching them in the next few years. They have a long term plan by all accounts and the ownership and GM seem to be on that same track.

Now they just have to hope that at least some of the young prospects they've been trading for turn out to be good ML players.
Not everyone is convinced they got those type of guys.

I think of things like this and it makes me freaked out about the possibility that the Mets could end up doing something like this.

Well, if things hold the way they are, this year would run our streak to one.

Good. I just wish that Van Slyke, Bonds and Bonilla were there to suffer through each of these seasons.

Re: Pirates long-term suckatude

I still remember the 1960 team that beat the Yankees in the World Series.
That team had a lot of players with colorful nicknames.
Here are some of them. Can you name the players? (Some should be easy, since they played for the Mets)
Arriba!
Duck
Dog
Vinegar Bend
Kitten
Quail
Smokey
Deacon
Dr. Strangeglove

Arriba! - I'll guess Clemente just for the Spanish name. Pittsburgh was among the first to heavily scout Latin America but most of them came later on in the '60s
Duck - I want to say Don Hoak although I have no idea why
Dog
Vinegar Bend - Mizell
Kitten - Harvey Haddix (IIRC he was 'the kitten' because he reminded some of a smaller version of Harry "the cat" Brecheen)
Quail
Smokey - Joe Burgess
Deacon - Vernon Law
Dr. Strangeglove - Dick Stuart, one of the great nicknames of all time

Re: Pirates long-term suckatude

Mostly correct.
Duck was wrong.
Quail and Dog still nameless.

Re: Pirates long-term suckatude

Um, Mazeroski for "Quail."

Dick Groat for "Duck."

"Dog" was Hoak, I guess. He's still on the board.

I don't know. I'm making barely educated guesses here. But I know Mets. And I know Bob Friend's nickname was "Warrior."

Nope, nope and nope.
OK,
Quail was CF Bill Virdon, for the way he ran after a fly ball.
Duck was infielder Dick "Ducky" Schofield. Pirate fans just called him Duck. (The best man at my wedding was a lifelong Pirate fan.)
Dog was left fielder Bob Skinner.

And hitters' nickname for Friend was probably "That f'n spitballer".

Re: Pirates long-term suckatude

Yeah, of course, Ducky Schofield. I just didn't really think of him as a 1960 Pirate, as he wasn't starting that year.
